Vehicle is 6 months old 7400ks. Have had nothing but trouble with the multimedia. Also the vehicle had a system diagnostic failure plus a parking brake, cruise control, sensors failure and the vehicle did not record the faults. I have no confidence in the electronics of this vehicle at all. Show details

The most refined towing vehicle I have ever had. Gone to this best Toyota after nightmare with the junk KGM Ssangyong Musso I had. Luxurious cabin, powerful twin turbo engine tow 2 ton with ease. Initially I thought 10 speed auto is bad for towing but it actually tow very fuel economically. I also like the huge fuel tank, all time awd for wet… Read more

I have owned more than 10 different types of landcruisers in 63yrs. From bj40, hj47, fj55, 60s, 70s, 80series and 1hzj75 troopies. All great vehicles for their purpose but all bricks on the hwy and rough as guts. My current 2008 Lc200 4.7l v8 2uzfe vvti petrol beats them all hands down for cruising comfort, power and space overall. Bought this… Read more

vehicle with 320k from a wheat farmer in WA. I was a tour operator doing safaris tours thru Kakadu, Arnhemland, Bungles, Kimberley and Cape York. Its Got to be the best all round 4by4 by far. New radiator and regular preventative maintenance and regular 7k fluid changes, air filter cleans, plugs, brake n pwr steer flushes, automatic trans, regular greasing and such.Upgraded ims 2"lift suspension, New Timing Belt n wpump. Now done 420k and its still running and looks like New I have not had a single issue on the road, no dash lights, no breakdowns, nothing broken or doesn't work. No paint fade, no cracks. Quiet Powerful, 8 seater comfortable, smooth and absolutely Reliable. Same factory rims, same exhaust n mufflers, same moulded bbar. I couldn't want for a better vehicle for overland travel (Land Cruiser) as the name implies in the true sense. As in any vehicles longevity & reliability you gotta do the maintenance regularly and doing it yourself you know its done and done with love. A little extra Fuel is a small price to pay for reliability, comfort & power. It's now 18 years old. Show me any other car since 2008 with 420k that looks, drives and performs like New. I know I will do over 1 million ks+ no worries at all. Just love this car.

Love the V8 Cruiser! – Now owned for 6 months (driven 10000 kms) now and it’s done 98500 kms Pros: - Comfortable and smooth ride - lazy power, but has great pick up - the tech is dated but functional and it works - loves the open roads about averages 10 kph - plenty of room for (last trip had - 2 golf bags, 48l fridge, luggage, fishing gear and dog) - fixed price… Read more

service - value has not dropped as yet

Cons: - need to consider parking options if you are traveling to shops etc - fuel economy ok for size / weight but small trips / stop-start trips are bad averages 13 kph - service intervals 10000 or 6 months

Because it’s a daily driver I have kept the set up standard but flexible.

12 month update 110,000kms

Been reading and viewing a lot of negatives about the dusting, injectors etc but I have no issues at all. I believe after market especially the likes of tuners, ARB influencers etc are trying to drum up business. I check the airbox regularly and still clean. Have also been keeping a close watch on fuel economy and have been getting 10’s (Lph) by running on the speedo not GPS.

A reliable off road workhorse – Seats seven perfect for family and friends off road trips. Very reliable on and off road. Nice gusty engine and cool diesel revs. We hired a 100 at Fraser Island with family and friends and Fraser's tricky, bending, curving, and wet terrain, this land cruiser handled it with ease. Normal land cruisers are quite uncomfortable but the 100 was OK. It… Read more

Towing issues Update February 2025 – As you can see from my previous reviews I am a great fan of Toyota currently own a 2021 Prado GLX, a 2019 Hilux SR5 with another 3 Corollas, and a 2021 Toyota 86 in the family. The waitlist for the 300 series is 12-18 months, with dealers selling their high-end model 9-12 month demos at a healthy premium over the list price, and combined with the… Read more

big price hike over the 200, the 300 is now becoming an expensive vehicle.

However, if you need a comfortable, reliable, long-distance touring vehicle, with a reasonable towing capacity there really is no choice. The Prado is brilliant, but not at towing anything over 2 tonnes, my Hilux, with the original 450Nm engine, struggles to tow an unladen 2-tonne horse box.

The solution, I've been scouring the web for a reasonably priced GXL 300 series and found one in WA. It is a white GXL, with a tow bar fitted, service history, and 11 months old at a reasonable price. So, as you do, I flew to Perth and drove it back, 4485Km's in 4 days!!

How was it? Amazingly comfortable even without lumber support, (one of many omissions compared to my GLX Prado, more later). Again compared to the Prado, feels very cumbersome at first, but after the first 200kms felt stately, incredibly quiet, and highly responsive.

Let's get the negatives out of the way, again compared to the 2021 Prado GXL which this is replacing: No lumber support No sat nav (Ok Apple Car play, but that's useless for over 3500 Kms of the journey with no internet) No rain-sensing wipers No Headlamp washers No locking rear diff

It has got all the safety tech designed for people who can't drive, can't judge distances from the car in front, can't read speed limits, and can't keep in their lane..... enough said. Toyota I would happily dispense with all the unnecessary 'added value' safety features for, in order of priority, driver lumber support, rain-sensing wipers, and a locking rear differential, the latter even as an aftermarket option!.

The auto hand brake is brilliant, interior, and ergonomics are pleasantly good, although had I bought this from new would have avoided a black headling, although I do admit, it creates a sort of calming environment.

Performance, is astounding, with 700Nm of torque available, overtaking 'follow my leader' road trains can be undertaken safely, and very quickly. The 10-speed Auto gearbox works extremely well and gives the impression it's programmed to keep the engine speed at 1200 - 1500 rpm at any road speed chosen by the driver. No hunting, always in the right gear no matter the demands of the driver. Handling for such a big car is far better than I expected, better than my 2021 Prado. Feels more composed on the road, and handles the surface irregularities, potholes, washouts, and gravel sections, of which there were many on this journey, following the recent floods, very well, especially as the vehicle had virtually no load, apart from me and and of course fuel. Seats were very comfortable I had to sleep in the front passenger's seat in the car park of a roadhouse one night, as every bed on the Nullarbor was taken. Covering over 1100 km a day resulted in many hours in the driving seat. I cannot praise the comfort and driving ergonomics of this vehicle enough, and to top it all I averaged 10.2 liters/100Km driven hard.

I love the Prado, it does everything I ask, and more, the current fuel consumption with a mix of local and 260Km return trips on the Bruce Highway is 8.1Lires/100Km's.

But, it cannot tow 3.5 tonnes, and even if it did 500Nm is a tad on the low side. The 300 GXL is significantly quieter, and roomier, with 700Nm has the highest torque of any large off-road capable SUV in Au, and is very good on fuel economy.

I said I had mixed feelings, largely because the Prado is so brilliant, however having traveled over 1100Km's a day for 4 days in the 300 I think I am finally converted, even with the omissions and highly irritating 'driver aids'.

UPDATE October 2023 Added a further 15,000kms since I bought the vehicle, overall the best Landcruiser ever built. Putting aside the downsides referred to above, comfort, quietness and most suprising of all economy is amazing. Tow a 3500kg horse box with ease with trip consumption 11.2l/100, without the trailer low 9's /lites /100km.

Delighted.

Update March 2024 This vehicle grows on you like no other. Fuel consumption on a regular 368km round trip, 90% motorway, 10% heavy Brisbane traffic, is regularly 7.9 - 8.2L/100km, around town 9.8 -10.4. At almost 50,000km the engine runs perfectly. The Dunlop Grandtrek AT O/E tyres are starting to thin, and after a couple of frustrating hours on the telephone, I established there are plenty of manufacturers offering 265/65/R18's BUT not at the correct speed and load rating. The 300 has a 114V rating, a Load index of 114 = 1180kg per tyre, whilst the V Sspeed symbol = 240Kmh. Currently, only two manufacturers offer an All Terrain 265/65/R18 114V and both are fitted as O/E on the 300 series across the range, they are the Bridgestone Dueler AT693, and the Dunlop Grandtrek AT30. I have seen quite a few 300 series fitted with AT tyres that do not meet the ADR specification, either lower load or speed rating or both. Surely this would have an impact on any insurance claim in the event of an accident??

Think I'll go for the Brdgestones, I have used this brand on all my previous 4x4's, (Hilux, (2) Prado, FJ, 100 series), great wet performance, and off road ability which to me just about cancells out the noise as they wear, and in 15 years and some 500,000km's never had one punctured

Summary, extremely capable long-distance hauler, suprising fuel economy, terrific touque, brilliant 10 speed gearbox, keeps the engine under 2000rpm, (unless overtaking roadtrains, (beware, the speed rapidly increases into license ban area!) Cabin in very comfortable, even the drivers seat without lumber support is good for 4-5 hours at a time, leg room in the back is on par with a limo, 3rd row of seats is OK for children under 15 years old, folded up provided cavernous storage area.

This is definitely going to be a keeper for me.

UPDATE February 2025

Continues to be an excellent long range cruiser, eating up the km’s with ease. Biggest issue is the soft rear suspension when towing. Pulling a 2ton horse box with one horse on board, total trailer mass 2.6 tonnes, the rear end drops substantially. Have even had the front wheels loose traction pulling away from the lights on a wet tarmac road with 50% worn tyres. Checked down force on tow ball, well under 350kg, I always check combined weight on a weighbridge before departing on long towing journeys. This makes the steering light and handling potentially hazardous in wet conditions. Offical response is that I could install an aftermarket suspension upgrade, didn’t plan on spending $$$$’s to rectify a design problem on a vehicle that’s supposed to tow 3.5tons!!. Very disappointed, My Hilux with a a 3.2 tonnes towing capacity tow far better, just lacks power, and the 450nm struggles to keep up, however the leaf spring suspension does a far better job under load than the 300 series.

Couple of other irritating issues, quality of the foam in the front seats leaves a lot to be desired, drivers seat cushion replaced under warranty after 3 years and 60,000 kms, front passenger seat going the same way.

Paint pealing off the factory tow bar, I have friends with 300’s who have experienced similar problems, it looks a mess with paint flaking off around the tow ball, poor preparation before painting.

The biggest issue for me is the poor towing capabilities, it’s used 4-6 times a year for interstate equestrian events.

I be would be interested if other owners have experienced similar problems.

Best vehicle that I have ever owned – My Landcruiser Sahara 200 series VDJ V8 diesel has been used over 14 years across Australia. The 200 series just clocked up 575,000 km and is towing equipment reliably. The engine has only had 10,000 km oil changes but premium CJ4 grade low ash oil has always been used. This oil is blended by TriTech lubricants of Carrum Downs Vic.The first belt… Read more

and radiator hoses were fitted at 480,000 and are still usable. Replacement of all belt idlers and water pump were part of the 500,000 service. A small leak in a radiator top tank prompted replacement and the viscous fan clutch was replaced as well. Only the idlers showed signs of wear.

The vehicle does not use more fuel or oil and is probably due to the fact that diesels are better if worked hard, this car recently tripped to darwin in 2.5 days towing 3.5 tonnes, typical of its worklife.

If you do not wish to tow heavy trailers or caravans and want to light load the powerful V8 diesel, buy Prado instead. These cars were engineered to last for 25 yrs of off road use.

A million km is possible on a well maintained vehicle.....but do not light load it.

DPFilter – This is our second 200 series and love them both. Had issues with the DPFilters on our new one and Toyota replaced them plus injectors as I was not happy with the soot build up in exhaust and also fuel consumption. Cruiser at this stage had about 46000kl on the clock. Around 16-17 ltrs per 100 ATM and not happy as It was a little better than that… Read more

before the repairs were done. Have now done about 15000kl since and the soot issue appear to be better but am still not happy with the fuel consumption. Having said that, I love the comfort and reliability of my cruiser and would recomend a 200 series to anyone who would listen. My vehicle has always been serviced on or before the due date and I have everything done and more if required. Vehicle is now 4 1/2yrs old and done 62000kl. I am not questioning the dealers ability as I am happy with what they did but have never had a vehicle use this much fuel especially when it states that Fuel consumption when new was around 9.6ltrs per hundred. I am using nearly double that, so not impressed. Im not a mechanic but Maybe the computer needed an upgrade after repairs were done.

This 4wd is a lifetime auto – Toyota has definitely made the 100 series landcruiser one very tuff and extremely reliable 4wd. I have had my 2004 sahara from new and have taken her up to 687565kms without anything rebuild of engine or transmission. the head lights on overnight. Your buying quality and reliability very practical for off road, towing, people moving, work or family this this a truck that's truly built to last. The engine is so balanced that you can stick a 50c piece up on its end on the top of the engine cover and start it up rev it and turn it off and the 50c will stay standing on is end. Plenty of power and unbelievable braking very easy to take on long drives towing boat or caravan. Cannot find another 4wd anywhere that is better for price and quality than a 100 series. When the engine finally quits i won't be buying a 200 series I will just repower mine and keep her she still is quiet no clunks bangs whines or anything she still drives almost like new. I have had so many different cars and 4wds but nothing comes remotely close to cruisers. If you want a 4wd dont buy anything less either the 4.7 V8 or the mighty 1HDTFE 6cyl turbo diesel the diesel is good for over a 1,000,000kms if looked after. Anyway I have had my sahara for 17years and if it was ever written off I would only buy another 100 series pre GFC they were not subject to the budget cuts the 200 series faced in 2008 so no corners cut or R&D with a tight budget trying to save money at every step and part. I have said enough hope you find a 100series to enjoy as much as I have!

Horses for courses – You don't buy a pair of football boots to play basketball, similarly if you don't need a rugged off road vehicle with 7 seats and towing capacity then buy something else. The 200 is a truck, adapted for the road. It's heavy, uses plenty of diesel, 5k service intervals and the features - even I'm the Sahara - are a generation behind. But as a large, family friendly towimg vehicle there is no competition. Super reliable and capable. Show details

Plenty of space, had my fridge in it with duel battery system, sensational, cold beers at the end of the day. Not pleasant trying to park it… Read more

in hotel car parks, didn’t want a caravan, which would have suited this car to a tee. Sold it because I got what I paid for it, I’m happy, I will miss the space though!! Fabulous car!!.

  LandCruiser 200 Mark I 4.5L Twin-Turbo Diesel GXL

King of the roads – Powerful Twin Turbo V8 Diesel giving 11L/100km in the city. There is no real competitor to this absolute beast. Extremely reliable, very capable, don’t need much more. Good for offroading and even as the grocery getter. 300,000kms+ and 0 issues other than listed below. However there are some issues that Toyota should be taking accountability for.… Read more

1. Dusting - The Toyota airbox is flawed by design. Toyota have never admitted to this, and if you don’t fix this your engine will be ‘dusted’ meaning you will need a new motor. 2. DPF and injector issues - While it is not an issue on pre 2017 models, the DPF and injectors are also flawed by design and will likely fail. So if you are going for a Landcruiser I recommend do get a PRE-DPF model, so you don’t waste time with that junk.

Does everything it’s asked and it’s so reliable – I own the diesel non turbo 1HZ motor in a 105 Series Landcruiser after previous owning an 80 series and 200 series V8 petrol I must say the 105 series is my favourite so far. it’s a 1998 with about 225,000kms manual transmission. Things don’t break but they do wear out over time so just factor that in. Being a diesel it’s reasonable mileage… Read more

generally getting between 12-13L per 100kms with a mix of city country driving. It’s no rocket but it’s not designed to be. Drive it like a truck eg don’t thrash it everywhere maintain it and it will last a long time.

1986 HJ61 G Wagon 5 speed manual – Purchased my vehicle from Maitland Toyota 2005 with 238000klm on the clock.I had been looking for a good one for approx. 12 months and had no idea how good these vehicles were apart from solid advice from certain sources. As suggested from the beginning I have changed the oil/Filter every 5000klm religiously and here I am today 605000klm and never… Read more

had a spanner on the motor.(No nonsense!!)Ticking like a clock. They are rust prone for sure particularly roof gutters but I am proud to say there is no rust in mine and WHY??Because I have cut it all out and have photos to prove it.When you see the way the roof is put together at factory specs you can see why rust gets into them.To this day mine is still stock (Apart from drivers seat/Mag wheels)standard but I know I could take it just about anywhere.A machine way ahead of its time IMO.
