GWM Ute Cannon-X 2021

I have had my cannon ute for almost 3 years and have covered around 15k km. I have been super impressed up until about 4 months ago when I started having issues with the touch screen controls. Trying to change the temperature or adjust the fan speed or direction required numerous stabs are mostly resulted in me giving up. I found it too… Read more
distracting, taking my attention off the road, and several times came close to an accident. I reported the issue to the dealer who tested it for themselves and agreed it was a warranty issue. Upon them following up with gwm they advised me that an update was being awaited as it was a known problem. I have followed up with the dealer who referred me to Gwm. I have since heard back from gwm Australia with the advice that they are awaiting an update from China and have no idea when or if the required update will eventuate. They have advised me that the vehicle is safe to drive providing that the control is not touched unless the vehicle is stationary. At this time of year it is cold in the morning requiring the full heater, but during the day the heat isn't required meaning that if I am travelling on the freeway l need to leave and find a suitable place to stop and play with the control to alter the settings. Obviously this isn't an acceptable solution long term. Gwm acknowledge that it's a warranty issue but refuse to accept that it is a safety problem. I was about to trade the ute for an updated model of the same make, now that I realise that the warranty is a figment of imagination I have changed my mind. Yes the cannon ute is a great machine whilst it behaves, but when the lack of support is factored in perhaps not such a sweet deal.
Pathetic service centres and non existant warranty work . These people appoint clowns as agents . Terrible service . I was going to update my vehicle , it wont be a gwm and I will never recommend this brand name again Show details
All good until it breaks down then your stuffed! – Not a bad Ute, definitely not a refined driving experience but it’s does the job, the BIGGEST problem is the after sales care and the lengthy delays to fix the vehicle. On my way to work one morning the engine started ticking I immediately rang the service centre and was basically told to drive the car till it broke down which it did that… Read more
afternoon, that was around 3.5 months ago and still no car, after being told it was the fuel pump around 1 month after the car was there and then upon further inspection the ended up telling me it was the motor(ON A 2 YEAR OLD VEHICLE WITH 83000km ON IT!!). Then it was were ordering a motor- then it was there’s NO MOTORS IN AUSTRALIA no I sit here still waiting for some confirmation that my car is actually getting fixed, not even a follow up call not even an ounce of respect to let me know what’s going on with my car. All due respect they have given me a replacement vehicle after around a month without one(the dealership) better then GWM aus offered me a hire car with a $3000-$5000 excess which means I dint that car and make a claim it costs me big time, the whole operation is a joke you CANT EVEN GET INTO CONTACT WITH ANYONE FROM GWM ONLY A EMAIL PROVIDED AND THEY DONT EVEN CONTACT YOU BACK. I really did like my Ute but after this experience I’m disgusted with the way I’ve been treated from a company I paid almost $50000 to only two years earlier. Would not reccomend buying these vehicles due to the fact of there after sales car.

So far, so gooood! – I love my Cannon X. Purchased new, Jan '24. Never missed a beat, minimal auto-burns, great fuel economy, excellent 4x4 capabilities.. Small and long country commutes, used daily. Recent 10k kms addition to vehicle, when touring Northern Western Australia. Absolute Beast.. Show details
Mentally draining – December 2023 I purchased a brand new Cannon L. During this time I’ve extended the tray, bullbar, tinted windows and towbar. All done my certified businesses. None of these caused any issues with the vehicle. The vehicle has now 13,000 on the odometer and bang. Vehicle won’t start. Contacted GWM Roadside service to which they organised a tow to… Read more
the closest GWM service dealer. (South coast NSW). That same day I contacted GWM Australia landline number which goes to a message bank. I also sent two emails to GWM Australia. 3 weeks later no communication with me. Vehicle had a diagnostic test done two weeks later and same day GWM technician attended service centre. 3 weeks later the part arrives, (fuel pump relay). Replaced and vehicle won’t start. Almost going onto three and half weeks and still no answers. GWM Australia will keep pumping out brand new cars but service departments can’t keep up. They’re not allowed to work on the car until GWM authorises it. It’s a hopeless system. I’ll be commencing NCAT proceedings. Update August 2024: my vehicle has broken down 3 times since the first. Vehicle will not be towed to the workshop as they’ll start another job card. The last incident/problem (17/8/2023) was exactly the same as the first time. Even the GWM technician tried to blame a third party and the service centre wanted to charge me$1900.00. Well that wasn’t paid. I would not trust a GWM vehicle again. The customer isn’t considered and none to minimal contact from GWM. You can’t speak with a representative or obtain any details to contact someone. Think twice before you buy. NCAT proceedings now.
Ups and downs – I've just clicked on 17,000kms from new and here's the honest opinion. GOOD 1. It's very comfortable and effortless to drive 2. Great features and inclusions 3. Handles well, reasonable turning circle 4. Great fuel economy 5. 7yr warranty with capped services 6. Good off road capability 7. Huge amount of room, large tray NOT SO GOOD 1.… Read more
Turbo lag is untrustworthy 2. Constant dpf burns 3. Gearbox is annoying, hangs onto gears, making it rev high 4. Underpowered slightly due to its size
All up, it's great for the price and having a 4WD Ute without paying $65k+
Nice interior but infuriating driver nannies – Bought 11/21 with X-spec now 12800km in NZ Haval people have no idea about what they are selling. I was told interior was resl Leather L- spec (8K cheaper) has Comfort-Tek Leather, whatever that is. Instead mine is cheap and nasty Leatherette. Not Leather. I put some decent wheels and tyres on mine and they did not even know stud pattern, offset,… Read more
center bore etc so I could not pre-order these. The driver aids cannot be turned off despite the dealer saying they can. I don't mean turning them off for every separate trip. The constant tugging on the steering wheel is unacceptable as is the fact you can't use the radio controls to shut it up while backing. The damn thin bleeps like crazy until you shut the camera off, which is ridiculous! Recently the Bluetooth microphone stopped working so nobody could hear me during call. Local dealer cannot fix this until they receive Chinese computer update and now all radio controls have frozen - no sound, nothing. The DPF diesel exhaust filter light comes on every 200km while the power goes down to about 50% and revs sit at about 1200rpm. Try towing or motorway stop-start with that. I had one total breakdown when gearbox said: Failure. Breakdown service was so pathetic it may as well not exist. I managed to get car mobile by disconnecting battery for 1 min. The fault has not recurred. As the 2nd Haval owned, I love and hate my ute but will never by another anyGWM and regret the purchase.
- +1
Very Very Happy – I'm a bricklayer and am extremely satisfied with my Cannon l. I know a few tradesmen who bought some big name utes and spent $15k more than me for similar or less specs. Only downside is some turbo lag. Couldn't be happier good work ute and good family ute. Vety Comfortable. Show details

Rear side assit sensor limited – Gday guys, i just hooked up my trailer to my gwm 20 model. As im driving, on my dash light up - rear side assit sensor limited- Any idea/help, safe to keep towing?
Pleasantly surprised great ute – Had many new Ute's from all brands and my 2022 gwm cannon X has been great with no issues. Takes a couple of weeks to get used to the way it works and suspension to settle in and just keeps getting better. I use it as a tradie so it carry 300kg in tools all the time and tows trailer and would definitely buy another one in the future. Show details
45000 kms later and very happy – Bought in 2022 May. Have had zero issues. DPF does its job and never had to do a manual burn. Very comfortable. Have not done any mods i.e all stock standard. Show details

Steering knocks and surging – Cannon ute ,,2023,,brought new,,now done 16000k,,,from day one have had the surging issue at around 90 t0 110 kphwhen holding a constant speed ,,,also from day one a knock coming through steering wheel that I have identified as a shaft coming out of the steering box,,,its a constant knock similar to a ball joint knock,,,both issues been noted… Read more
from first service,,initially they replaced engine mounts for steering knock of which I told them was a st^pid idea,,,now they tell me after a 3rd service that the knock in steering is common and a characteristic of the vehicle,,,so I have to live with it,,,engine surging they say is waiting for an engine program update,,,I call [Content Removed] as after nearly 4 years this model has been out ,if it was that easy of fix it would have been done already,,,

We all make mistakes- This heap of garbage was mine – Purchased this crap brand new on 7/2/23. It blew a turbo on 12/3/23 after approximately 1500K Dealer no help whatsoever. Impossible to contact GWM head office. However, given the [Content Removed] they are selling I can understand their desire to be invisible!! No one would listen when I advised that a failed turbo would likely lead to a failed… Read more
motor. Guess what??? Picked up the allegedly repaired [Content Removed] cart and it blew a motor before it travelled another 400K. and needed the motor replaced These things should be returned to China [Content Removed] making them. Absolute garbage vehicle. Do not buy a GWM product if you don't want to spend the rest of your life trying to get the [Content Removed] to work as advertised.
Reasonably Priced Ute – Pros: - Utes are in stock - Great pricing - Look great with lots of features - Haven't owned for long so will come back to you with reliability Cons: - Clunky dash / settings - Cant change defaults and default settings suck, resets everytime you drive - Spare key isnt a FOB with buttons, its a key - Default 4x4 driving They need to bring in… Read more
an update so that the default driving mode is ECO which is rear wheel driving mode, all other modes are 4wd. Wheels will chop out quicker when driving 4wd and having to change driving modes every single time you drive is annoying.
GWM - Please look at changing this.

Unhappy Customer – I’ve purchased my Cannon X in October 2022 brand new and as of today Feb 2023 it’s gone back to the dealer in LANSVALE GWM HAVAL 8 times. All of which stayed there between 4-7 days each time. Car front sensors were not working and the head Sales manager tells me ‘you need to put the car in Park then into drive for the sensors to work. explanation. Eventually they place a newer program for it to work after I complained.Weather shields were loose and almost flew off. Car was retuned within a week of owning it. A week later the car couldn’t start and needed to get towed to the dealer in Lansvale GWM. 3 weeks later, the car again didn’t start this time leaving a function and the entire family was stranded till 2am. Road side assist was pathetic. Again car towed to dealership. After 7 days there, i drive out of the dealership and within 40mins the entire screen blanks out but the radio is still playing! I notice the car leather seat has been damaged during the service, oil stains left throughout the car, even stains on the roof lining, ZERO CARE WAS TAKEN. Car goes back to the dealership. 2 weeks later , massive lag almost had an accident, the cruise control doesn’t stay on the recommended speed when driving up a slight hill. Cat begins to slow down. Now there might be a transmission problem. Also can’t stop the ringing telephone chime even when the phone is out of the car and the car is not running!! Constant problems with the car and the dealership, well the above says it all. Sold me a dud car and GWM /Haval Australia are no where to assist.
Good Ute needs some refinement – I own 2 cannon X utes and find both of them to be reasonable quality. Not to say ther hasn’t been minor problems, which dealer hasn’t hesitated to fix . I have found personally that after sales service is good and no worse than any other manufacturer. I have own several different type of Ute brands, while I find it good I would say it is as good… Read more
as say the new V6 ranger but I don’t feel that the ranger is 20 to 25 k better Ute and that saying something as I have been a for person until firs dropped falcon and started to up prices of ranger just because they can total rip off
There are some glitches that need to be worked out which hope will be done for any future updates but what manufacturers doesn’t have some sort of issue with there cars
As for the DPF cleaning haven’t had issue, one car has done 45k and the other has done 35k, if it automatically comes on when I am about to pull up I just drive it a little longer around block or sit and wait for it to finish before turning off Ute- never once had it go into limp mode and so far by doing this never has to do manual clean either
If considering buying would drive it first my biggest issue would be turbo lag and could do with more power
It is worth buying and maybe not quite as good as top spec Main Street utes but for the price it comes pretty close
With little more refinements as long as pricing doesn’t become to much could be real competition in market
I do find having to service it every 10k annoying and they don’t tell you at sales that timing belt is done at 70k when now days most utes are either 15 or 20 K service intervals and timing belts if not chain are now around 150k
Great vehicle – Bought the Cannon X new in July, 2022. I have put 6,000 kms on it and no issues. Excellent value for money and the car does everything I need it to do. I have not yet used it to tow but had the dealer fit a tow bar. Fuel economy I have been getting is around 10.5 litres per 100 kms around town. On the open road I get about 8.5. This is pretty… Read more
good in my opinion. The often mentioned DPF issues are not an issue at all in my experience.
There are a lot of nice touches and electronic aids. The car is not perfect and a few minor gripes I have (not deal breakers) are as follows. A light in the glovebox would be handy, as would another interior light in the back passenger area. There is no grab handle for the driver to assist with entry and exit. The headlights are average to poor.
All in all I am very happy and could have spent $20,000 or more extra on another brand. I have saved that money to invest or spend on other projects. If you’re in the market for a twin cab Ute, do yourself a favour and get a Cannon.
Far superior than vehiclesctrwice it’s price – 60,000km in 18months and going strong Tows 3 t van with ease Show details
Fantastic ute. Very impressed – Owned for 15 months and just crossed 55k kms. Still drives like new, literally no issues. I can confirm the build quality is really good probably better than a lot of cars twice its price. Its excellent offroad even with stock standard suspension and tyres. I dont find the 2l turbo to be sluggish at all, on highway it can cruise at 120km/h and… Read more
overtake cars without a fuss. Having driven many diesels in past I am familiar with the DPF, the tech in cannon allows you to manually do a dpf burn when needed. Sadly, many people do not read the manual and therefore have issues doing a burn. Overall I cannot fault the vehicle.

The best vehicle I've ever owned – One of the best vehicles I've owned and I've had many. The build quality and safety features are up there with vehicle twice the price, I have read reviews where people rubbish them not quite sure where they are coming from. Even the wife loves it, we look forward to the drive every time we get in it. We bought the X because of the exceptional fit out and ride. Show details
GWM ute cannon L – My ute has been great, up to 93k not a problem, been off road, been in water, mud, and actual 4x4ing and not a problem. Dpf comes on once every 2 weeks but I do allot of highway drives so the dpf runs like it should a note to others try doing a long drives to burn the crap out...... like all engines with dpf. Look on you tube to do a self dpf burn Show details
Engen and dpf self cleaning issues – I had the cannonx for just 3 months it's absolutely rubbish i have had driven for 3 months and 8000k the car lift me on the road this even doesn't worth $15000 don't trust free roads side assist and warranty they send you to the dealer and you need to wait for your car for long time Show details

NEVER BUY A GVM ute. Be careful – Bought a beautiful ute 12 mths ago. When buying asked salesman about spare parts as I'd heard there were lenghty delays. Promised me there would not be any problems. Well, some idiot rear ended us while we were stopped in traffic. Damaged the tailgate etc. Went in for repairs 7.5 mths ago. Still waiting on an undamaged part to arrive. So we had… Read more
the ute for 4.5 mths since brand new. The repair shop has had it for the rest and we're still waiting. Dont believe the salesman, they just want the sale. Apparently 50 tailgates came into the country this month. September 2022. Our part was damaged so repairer sent it back. Got the last one available. It too was damaged. So now we wait months for new stock to arrive. No care from GVM about after sales service. I regret buying it. The car itself is great from what I remember but I'll never buy another. As soon as it comes back I'm getting rid of it. I'll buy a more reliable vehicle. Bought a ute because i need a ute for home use. Havent had a ute for all this time with no end in sight. If you own one and have an accident, if you car is drivable, dont let repairer take it until the parts are in. Never buy GVM AGAIN
Excellent ute, surpassed expectations – I have owned the base model Cannon for over 7 months and already done over 30,000km. Drives rock solid & surprisingly great offroad. Fuel economy has been excellent & very comfy to drive for long distances. I was very skeptical about it being sluggish with a small engine but i can easily overtake literally any car on the highway without any… Read more
hesitation whatsoever. Build quality is great, good size tub & the camera quality is superb. Have taken it offroad several times and I was blown away how capable it really is with factory stock tyres and suspension. Capped price service is cheap & its good to see many aftermarket accessories are already available. If i was picky I would say the only thing I would improve on the car is the front suspension as is a little too soft but I will be getting a lift kit anyways which will solve the problem. The other small inconvenience that i faced very early with the car was initial turbo lag when taking off. Software update has improved it significantly. For 35K driveaway for a brand new 4x4 auto diesel dual cab ute with diff lock & 7 year warranty this car is simply the best priced ute on the market.
greatwall canon x dual cab ute 2022 – we have had this car for 5 months and have been driving every second day with the dpf ligh flashing and then going into limp mode at 30 k/ph this car is absolute rubbish and the dealer is even worse who doesnt help ,they even charged me 165 dollars to do a regen manually to help clear the filter two days later the same scratched record happens… Read more
and the dealer takes it and does another, then another dpf regen etc etc, i am sick of it, it has cost a lot of lost money with my job not been able to get to my jobs , honeslty absolutely pathetic car and service from suttons motor group who have been absolutely appauling service and advice with this issues and this car , i want my money back never want one of these cars ever again 70 times in 4 months every secon or third day light flashes and doesnt turn offfffff.(:
Excellent value for money. great features, reliable, well built – Had mine 14 months 38,000 kms no issues at all. Love the tailgate step, the luxury and refinement, the flip up rear seats, build quality, economy and performance, running costs. Overall very good - not worth spending the extra $20k to $35k to have a similar spec competitor ute. Show details
Was 5 star now after 2 years ownership 0 stars – We bought a cannon X in 2021 and have now done over 20000klm. Overall it has been a great Ute and we have not had any major issues with it. there. We also test drove a mitsubishi triton and that had the Lag as well so not just this vehicle.
##update. Do not buy this Ute If you want any sort of Customer service from GWM head office or the service centres in particular GWM Llewellyn at Ipswich or springwood. They simply do not care about the customers and will not honour their warranty. 0 stars
Amazing value that shows how much Aussies are being ripped off by Ford, Toyota etc for utes – I’ve owned my Cannon for a year and a half now, with 40k on the clock. I have the mid range L model as we wanted the 360 camera, heated seats and tailgate step. We took a gamble assuming it would be rated 5-star ANCAP and it was. Very impressed with the car and no mechanical issues. Feels sporty and European inside - I drive a new Isuzu for work… Read more
and it feels like an ugly tradie trasher in comparison despite selling for 30k more. Imagine buying a new Ute in 2023 without a high resolution screen, camera or lockable diff! It really puts the other companies to shame how much they are scamming Australians.
I was worried about the engine size, but the ZF gearbox gives the car plenty of power - I’m not the kind of person that needs an oversized engine and appreciate the efficiency.
I actually laugh to myself when I see people driving around in 70k Rangers that have less features - for such a big vehicle the top down camera is a god send for parking.
My only annoyances are: - The 10k service intervals- which offsets some of the value offering compared to utes that do 15k. - The computer doesn’t save driving settings - it would be good to have the car remember driving settings, driving modes (and eco) as resetting them each time you get in the car is silly - No rear passenger light due to other country versions having a skylight - minor - but with a baby in the back a passenger light would be a nice low cost additions - Then company needs to make more effort for accessories - for example, still no paint code for touch up paint from places like Autobarn - things like this are minors but stuff the company needs to get right to build brand loyalty
It’s worth including the extra service if costs when running your numbers as over the 7 year warranty of the vehicle this may be a fair bit extra but you won’t beat this ute for features vs price presently.. highly recommended
