Good Simple Moden-Router – There are multiple variations of the DG834G. I have the 834Gv3. It has been stable and provides good performance within the limits of b/g wireless and 10/100 ethernet. The web interface is relatively easy to master and has a good but not brilliant help for the non-technical. With 2011 prices for current 834's in the $50 range it is great… Read more

value for money for the typical user. Stable; Web interface; vertical or horizontal. Reliable Wireless range only OK. Performance middling.

OK – I picked up one of these on sale and it suited the purpose for what was needed. If you don't have kids and you don't need 802.11n wireless then these are OK if you can get a good deal. Cheap, easy to set-up, works well for what it is. No way to disable/filtering the LAN sockets on the back, so no way of keeping meddling kids from using the net… Read more

when you don't want them to.

The unit we had does not like the heat, this has been a common problem with lots of similar units, and a reset will solve the problem but it is a nuisance.

Good – If you are looking for an easy to set up ADSL/ADSL2+ modem and router with wireless G, this unit is great. If you like to tinker with every setting known to man, you will need to spend a few more dollars. Reasonably priced, very easy to set up and get running. Does not have a few features that I would like to have, but for the price of the unit, I didn't really expect it to.

Terrible – this model is costing more than dlink modems capable of hosting 5 type of connections. like here i can not configure my iptv connection where as in dlink 604 t i am able to use internet as well as iptv light weight single connection

Good – I really like how this unit is four different devices in one: (1) ADSL modem (2) Firewall/router (3) Wireless access point (4) 4-port ethernet hub/switch. The web interface is very clearly layed out with helpful documentation. It is relable and supports the faster ADSL 2+ technology. I have set up about seven of these units for family and… Read more

friends. If I was buying another ADSL modem/router and wireless access point I'd buy another Netgear DG834G. This unit is very, very easy to configure. The configuration is done through a web interface. Settings are divided into sensible groupings on different pages complete with helpful documentation in a column down the right hand side of the page. Having ADSL modem, router and wireless access point in one unit makes home networking much easier to set up than if using separate units/boxes/devices.

I have configured Apple AirPort Express to connect (wirelessly) to the Netgear DG834G without problem.

The wireless service supports the newer, more secure, WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) protocol (better than WEP). Perhaps the only thing this unit lacks is a bit more control over port-forwarding. The settings allow all-ports forwarding from the public IP (WAN) address to one private (LAN) address. It can't port-forward to several IP addresses on the private (LAN) side. I believe some other ADSL modem/routers provide more control here (eg Billion and Linksys). Excecpt for the more advanced user however this is not a problem.

Netgear has so far released two revisions of this unit (three versions in total). Firmware updates are specific to each version. Installing the wrong firmware could cause problems.

Good – I used a Netgear DG834G for 3 years without a problem and have only recently upgraded as I required QoS (quality of service) and VoIP support. It was a reliable, simple way to make my ADSL service avialable to both of our PCs with good security. All-in-one device. Reliable. Good wireless signal strength. Hardware version 2 onwards is small and… Read more

looks good enough to have in your lounge room. Easy to configure and maintain. Strong security protocol support (WPA2). Still popular with good resale value 2nd hand. It is getting a bit long in the tooth and does not have as many features as some newer products. No in-built VoIP support (although other Netgear products have this).
