Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil Questions & Answers
VerifiedHi, I applied 2 coats of the Ultradeck to our new Spotted Gum deck. It was looking fantastic. Then the builders came back to finish putting the final screws in and they have left weird waxy like scuff marks everywhere. The builder suggested giving the deck a very light sand and then another coat of Ultradeck. What do you think?

We have just high pressure washed our deck and in some sections the product has nearly come off. It is a huge deck. Is there some way to touch up the damaged areas?

Hi, I've just painted my timber railing outside with Ultra Deck and it rained around 2 hours after application. The timber is now blotchy with a light milk colour over the most of the railing. What is the solution please
Hi Brian, We're sorry to hear about your railing. It sounds like you have a bit of water whitening. This occurs when moisture affects a water-based coating. To fix the blotchiness we would recommend allowing the railing a few days with no rain to dry out, followed by a good clean with our Ultraprep Timber Cleaner. Once clean and dry you can coat with UltraDeck again, but be sure to do so when light to medium showers are not expected for at least 3 hours from finishing the final coat. Be sure to apply this coating in normal coating conditions (15-35 degrees C, less than 85% humidity) If you would like more assistance with this, please feel free to give us a call on 1800 630 285. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 7:00 pm, and Saturday 8:30 am to 3:00 pm AEST.

I have prepped seating and screens using the intergrain tannin and oil remover followed by the timber cleaner. Is it ok to wait till next weekend to apply ultradeck oil and if so, do I need to reapply the timber cleaner? It is forecast to rain this week.
Hello Joanne, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your enquiry. If you experience rain, before you have the opportunity to coat your timber there is a possibility of contamination. This is why we recommend cleaning and then coating as soon as the timber is dry. If you have had to allow it a few days, but there is no rain and the surface has not gotten dirty in any way you are fine to coat.

I have used the product on my deck, it now has some scuff marks on it what is the best way to rectify these few small areas.
Hello there Colin F, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. When it comes to scuff marks over a thoroughly cured dry timber deck coated surfaces expanse - It’s best to first wash down the surface with a pressure wash/scrub down, along with a higher dilution of UltraPrep Timber Cleaner, as per label instructions. Once rinsed clean and dry, just assess the area of concern to see if it has reduced or completely removed the scuff mark. If the scuff mark is still quite noticeable, you are best to give the area a light 240 grit sanding back with the timber grain, and apply the pressure wash/scrub down process as outlined. Then after deck has dried – Apply two coats of your Intergrain decking oil to finish. external link
Also note : If the scuff mark is very subtle and hasn't penetrated the surface - You can give the scuffed area a light wipe for a few minutes with methylated spirits on clean lint free cloth,if you've used the water based UltraDeck Timber Oil or Stain. Use mineral turps if you've used the solvent oil based Intergrain Universal Timber Oil, or Nature's Timber Oil.

I have previously used Intergrain UltraDeck Timber oil. Have had the deck professionaly cleaned but the deck is still coloured with the previous coatings of timber oil and black marks in the shady areas have not been removed. If I do the coatings now, it will go over the back marks and appear patchy. Do I need to pressure wash the surface again using Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover then when dry give it a sanding back with an 80 grit sanding pad or belt sander? Can this be sanded back now without using other products?
Hello there Lesley, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. When it comes to uneven, patchy deck coated surface areas,it’s best to first wash down the surface with a pressure washe, and leave it to dry. Once the deck has dried – Give the entire deck surface a nice even sanding back with a 60-80 grit sanding pad or belt sander, plus an orbital sanding unit, for wall edge and any other awkward sections. The sanding process back to bare timber will open up the timber grain, even out the surface and allow the two step UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover, followed directly by Timber Cleaner, the very best opportunity to really get deep down into your timber decking, in order to remove any dark oxides or mould marks over it. Once rinsed clean and dry, you can start applying your choice of Intergrain protective Timber Oil or Timber Stain options, over your freshly clean uniform timber deck expanse.
Note: Please be sure to apply a small sample colour test by two - three coats first, over a clean, dry hidden section, via your choice of Intergrain protective coating. Just to make sure you're happy with the dry test coated colour result, before committing to the expanse. The process outlined would achieve the very best uniform protective oil or stained deck finish for you.

How long after applying intergrain ultraprep do I need to wait to apply intergrain ultradeck timber oil? Currently 23 degrees in Perth wa
Hello there Monica C, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. It generally depends on the overall size of your timber deck expanse, surface condition, and location. I would suggest it best to wash/scrub down a timber deck with the UltraPrep solutions in the mid-morning, and allow the thoroughly rinsed off expanse to dry over the rest of the day/night. Then in the morning, give the dry clean surface a quick broom of any settled dust if any, and start applying your Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil water based, by two – three coats, in colour of choice. However – If your timber deck is relatively small (Under 15m2) and washed during a mild 20C day forecast , then you could certainly wash in the early morning and coat in the afternoon between 1pm and 4pm.

Hello Monica, Ultra prep is a strong cleaner. It also will cause loose and unstable old coatings to become a bit easier to remove. The answer is - it depends. In general, you brush and scrub on the prep, maybe use a high pressure cleaner, wait until the surface is dry. If you are trying to remove an old coating you would use a sander, then ultra prep after that. A smooth, clean surface is what you want. If the surface is weathered, ultra prep will help a bit. Ultradeck will make whatever you do have look as good as it can possibly look.
Can you paint Ultradeck over Bondcrete?
Hello, this may sound like an odd question, but is it possible to apply UltraDeck timber oil over paint? If so, will I need to apply one or two coats of the Ultradeck, and how often will the Ultradeck need recoating? (it is for an exterior fence exposed to full sun and weather)
Hello Vicki, No you would not put UltraDeck over paint. You must strip off all of the old paint first. Use a heat gun (buy from hardware store, $40 to $60) and a scraper. Then use an electric sander to prepare further. Preparation is at least 50% of painting. The better you prepare, the better the end result. In full sun, UltraDeck will last up to 2 years. Recoat before it starts to crack.
Hi, it really depends on the timber on your fence. Wether it’s like an old rough sawn timber or something smooth in good condition. If it’s rough sawn, you will probably never get the paint off it completely. If it’s smooth depending how much fence there is. It’s a descent amount of work. But you should get the paint off first. Wish you well :)
Hello there Vicki J, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. The Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil water based,is specifically formulated for application over well prepared, clean dry bare exterior timber surfaces by two – three coats in colour of choice. The UltraDeck Timber Oil formulation requires the bare timber porosity to establish that all-important first anchor coat, which penetrates the bare timber that then provides a durable base for the ensuing coats, in order to form the durable semi-transparent barrier film over the expanse. Applying the Timber Oil over a dry solid painted finish is not recommended as the oil would not have a porous surface to adhere to and would eventually lose adhesion, which is not ideal.

Hi, my first coat of Intergrain was perfect. The second coat ( 1/4 tin left of yesterdays Intergrain ) is nice and shiny. The new tin has produced a cloudy finish !! Help
Hey, sometimes if it either gets wet, or it’s humid it will do this. Or if it’s done in cold weather. But it does stop being cloudy over dryer weather and a week or so. I have had this problem too on a clients deck. I did it when it was cold and the moisture over night would make it milky. But then would it dry in the sun. Now it doesn’t do it anymore.
Thank you, but the temperature was 20 deg. and overcast. Most of the area is undercover and never gets sun. This has never happened before and looks terrible!
Yep, it had never happened to me before either. I’m not sure what’s happening. Maybe the product has changed. Because I have used it for a very long time, ond this has only started happening. But they assured me it was normal? In cold humid whatever. But I don’t know…. Sounds like the product to me. Like I said, it’s never been a problem before.
It feels like there is sand through the product and it has a rough surface. There is no clear shine.
Hello there Jen, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. What you have described there sounds like what is known as Water Whitening, which is quite common. Water Whitening is a phenomenon that occurs when moisture or water comes into contact with a water based decking oil or stain, that has not fully cured. Usually, this happens when it rains shortly after finishing the deck, however, a particularly dewy evening can cause whitening on the freshly coated decking surface. Water whitening can appear in patches, spots, or, in occasional cases, across the entire deck. The only ill effect of Water Whitening is the fact that it is unsightly. It is a visual effect only and in no way affects the longevity or durability of the finish applied. Once the sun hits the deck, this appearance will usually go away, as the exposure removes moisture trapped in the coating or on the surface. Some decking coatings can take 7-10 days to fully cure. While it is unusual for Water Whitening to persist for more than 24 hours after coating, it can occur during the entire curing process, depending on the conditions. If you’re concerned about the look, or are unsure if Water Whitening has occurred, there are a couple of remedies you can try - Apply warm air to a small affected area using a hair dryer or similar. Be sure not to get too close to the surface, staying at least 15cm away.
If it is still an issue after the hair dryer process, you can hose down the surface and gently scrub over the expanse using the Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner dilution, as per label instructions. This should rectify the issue for you. external link

I sanded down and wet mopped the merbau decking which is about a year old. I then applied Intergrain Ultra deck timber oil the same type as originally used. Today the surface is sticky to walk on. How do I fix up and dry off the sticky surface?
Is it water based or oil based?, if it’s water based or oil based it will stop being sticky generally when it fully cures. Which can be several days. The heat can also make it feel sticky freshly after re doing it. It will stop being sticky, maybe just take a few days.
Thanks Michael for the reply. The paint is water based so I'll give it a few days..Cheers Laurie
Hello there Laurie B, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. At times, a fresh protective exterior timber deck coating can take a little longer to cure than quoted on the product label. There are a number of reasons why a fresh deck coating might remain sticky/tacky after the application of the final coat.
Some of the more common reasons are - Weather conditions can be either too cold or humid during both application and curing time. The porosity of the timber can significantly affect drying times. Timber surface/air temperature on application and especially how heavy the coatings were applied will generally extend the curing time.
To rectify - Please allow 5-7 days of clear weather, as the coating will fully cure and the sticky/tacky surface should disappear. If after that time it is still a little sticky, you can hose down the surface down and apply the Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner as per label instructions. Once rinsed clean and dry,we recommend applying one final even, well-stirred coat of your Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil, to finish.

How do you remove it from brickwork
Hi, I'm currently applying Intergrain Ultradeck timber oil to a north-facing deck that gets full sun. Got first coat on yesterday on a nice cloudy but warm morning. Today is already baking the wood hot. Tomorrow is again to have a cooler cloudy start. Is a 48 hour interval between coats still acceptable for this product?
Also take it using 'natural' for second coat on top of merbau first coat is fine? Thanks, Bob
I would do the same thing. So long as the deck is still clean I see no problem with any of that.
Michael. Painter
A second coat is not always warranted. The key with Ud is regularity of maintenance not number of coats.
Thanks Michael and Insider. Went with my plan and it turned out OK. Interesting that two coats not always warranted, that avoids darkening the look too much, certainly, but I was ended up following what the tin said. Appreciate the advice - all good, Bob.
Hello there Bob, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. The Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil water-based is formulated as both a penetrating and surface barrier forming, exterior timber oil, in colour of choice. It will dry to a semi-transparent surface barrier film which is best applied out of direct sun exposure in the heat of the day (like most protective coatings) as it can often skin over too fast and trap the rest of the curing oil under the barrier surface skin, that can then lead to incomplete film formulation over the area, which can cause finish issues. In dry ideal conditions at temps between 15-35 °C and Humidity <85%, you have a recoat time of 3 hours. In much cooler temps between 5-15°C, you have a recoat time of 8 hours.
We recommend a minimum of two coats be applied to achieve the very best UltraDeck Timber Oil finish to aid in the strong UV/weather resistance and foot traffic exposure over the years. Two coats are important, due to many bare timber decks often having variable timber porosity over an expanse, which will absorb the first coat at different rates from one end of the deck to the other. Hence, the second coat fills out those variable porous sections to achieve a lovely, smooth, even timber finish, that should last you between 3-4 years with regular cleaning maintenance.
It’s also very important to prepare a new bare or previously coated exterior timber deck expanse via thorough pressure wash/scrub down, along with the Intergrain Tannin & Oil Remover, followed by the UltraPrep Timber Cleaner, as per label instructions. Once rinsed clean and dry – You are good to start applying your protective coating by two–three coats.

Hi, we’ve just used intergrain on our deck as our annual top up and accidentally got some on white paint skirting our back door, is there an easy way to remove it from painted wood on / unwanted areas?
Hello there Jac, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. When it comes to UltraDeck Timber Oil water-based, unwanted splash marks or accidental markings - Can be carefully removed by using a clean lint-free cloth and some methylated spirits rubbed gently over the area of concern until it starts reducing and eventually disappears. Please note - I your white painted skirting is painted with a water based enamel, it may slightly remove some of the paint also. If the white paint is an oil-based enamel, it will be perfectly fine otherwise.
Also, note - It does depend on the white painted surface texture and also how heavy the accidental Timber Oil might be dried over it. The thicker the oil has set, the longer it will take to reduce down with the methylated process and cloth.

I forgot to mix the ultra prep mould killer so when I finished scrubbing with a bristled broom it lifted parts of the wood fibres in places. I scrubbed trying to lift the fibres and washed well but once dry it has a white coating and an unsmooth finish. Should I wait until fully dry then lightly sand back and wash before staining. This treated pine deck has never been stained before. Thankyou.
Hi Team Looking to apply two coats of Ultradeck stain with Ebony then coat of Ultradeck timber oil Will I need one or two coats of Ultra deck to finish
Will REVIVER remove heel scuff marks on an Intergrain Stained Jarrah wood floor ?
Hello there John T, Thank you for reaching our via Product Review. The Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner ( Previously Reviva ) can remove subtle surface scuff marks if they're not too deep into the protective UltraDeck Timber Stain barrier coat. Please note - If it's a deeper scuff mark, you are best to give the board/s affected a light even sanding first, using an 80 - 120 grit sanding pad to even out the damaged surface area. Then, give the area a thorough wash down with a hose and scrub the UltraPrep Timber Cleaner into the deck expanse (Assuming that's an exterior Jarrah deck) as per label instructions. external link

I am about to coat cedar sheds and ultradeck is recommended as a protective coat. I'd like to make the windows and doors stand out by using a solid colour for those. Please advise how to do this. Their recommendation is to use an oil based primer first. What paint types could be used over this?
Hello there Margaret W, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. If you are looking to achieve a defined contrast in colour transition between your coated Cedar shed exterior cladding, timber window trims and door – The trims and doors will certainly standout from the main shed cladding if you use a solid white like a Dulux Vivid White, Natural White or any warm or cool Dulux White colour in Dulux Aquanamel by two coats, against, the UltraDeck Timber Oil in any of the semi transparent colour options to choose from like the Natural,Merbau,Spotted Gum or Jarrah colour options.
Please note: You can apply the Dulux water or oil based 1 Step Prep by two coats over your window trims and door, and once thoroughly dry, you can apply the water based Dulux Aquanamel in colour and sheen finish of choice by two - three coats.
Please be sure to first, thoroughly wash/scrub down any of your exterior timbers before coating,by applying the Intergrain Tannin & Oil Remover, followed directly by the Timber Cleaner as per label instructions. Once all is rinsed clean and dry, you can start your protective coating applications. external link external link

Can you apply ultra deck natural over 2 coats of ultra deck Merabu I don’t want it to get any darker but want another coat on it
sticky after 2nd coat intergrain ultra deck oil
Hello there Dot, Thanks so much for reaching out via Product Review, with regards to your Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil water-based project. There are a number of reasons why a fresh deck coating might be sticky after the quoted drying times on the label. The preparation wash down, and the porosity of the bare timber or coated surface can significantly affect drying times along with the humidity, surface, and air temperature at the time of application. Another is, how heavy the coating may have been applied and if there’s any subtle decking board cupping or deck sagging over the expanse, which can cause pooling in certain sections and hence longer drying times.
The good news is – Your coating will certainly dry but may take longer than the specified drying times on the label. We recommend allowing 5-7days for a sticky coating to cure, but if after that time it is still a little sticky or tacky – You can give the surface a wash down and apply the Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner as per label instructions. Once rinsed clean and dry – Assess again to see if it needs another wash down process as outlined. If the surface is no longer sticky, then you are best to apply one final, well stirred UltraDeck Timber Oil coat to finish.
