Used this on a new spotted gum deck as recommended the deck builder. After 4 months and 3 applications to the letter deck was badly cupping and cracking. Black mold starting to grow under coating. Cost me $1000 and days work to chemicaly strip it and prepare for cutek oil. So much better. If your deck is outside do not use this product. Show details

Absolutely furious. I spent three full days sanding and prepping my back deck, expecting a smooth finish with what Integrain advertised as a timber oil. What a joke. This product is NOT an oil — despite what it says on the front of the tin. It left lap marks all over the deck, stayed tacky for days, and completely ruined the boards I worked so… Read more

hard to prepare. Misleading doesn’t even begin to cover it.

I chose Integrain UltraDeck Merbau thinking it was a premium upgrade from Cabot’s Aquadeck. Big mistake. This product is a disaster — slow drying, lap marks and nothing like a true penetrating oil. I’ve wasted time, money, and effort, and now I’m stuck with a deck that looks patchy and feels sticky. Integrain, how dare you market this as a timber oil? It’s false advertising, plain and simple.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. If you care about your deck, your time, or your sanity — steer clear.

Terrible result. We had a professional painter use this product on our timber deck. He followed the instructions to the letter. The end result is very disappointing. It has been three weeks since it was done and it’s looking very uneven and has a tacky feel. Can’t put furniture back on it and we’re waiting on advice from the painter as to the next course of action.

Restore the "pop" to your deck – I wanted to restore the shine to my deck, so I chose Intergrain Ultradeck Timber Oil. It was easy to apply and provided great uniformity in shine to my deck which had varying areas of being weathered. It dries quickly so I was able to get a good 3 coats within one day. Highly recommended. Show details ·  1

Awesome product. Used again and would use again – My builder mate installed 10 x 3 m merbau deck 5 years ago near our pool area. I stained it back then with Intergrain Ultradeck (don’t recall if timber specific stains were a thing then). Anyways, it did really good for a few years but I should have done re-application every 18mths as it is very sun exposed in big areas (my bad). So the deck stain… Read more

had weathered and I ended up having to sand it back fully with a belt sander. Should have hired a floor sander as sanding hardwood blows. But this product review is about Ultradeck. I had some Reviva left over from last time and used that to clean/prep after sanding. I applied 3 coats on a nice 22 C day, about 3-4 hrs apart. It certainly came up dark (no orange) as per colour chart. It has cured well after a week. Minimal stickiness and no issues with milky appearance after recent rain. It seems a number of people on this forum have had issues, and I am not sure what is different in product, situation, or preparation or application, but my experience was and still is awesome. Goes on easy. Will last ages. Makes timber look new again. Cleans up easy. No complaints whatsoever.

Not great.... but not bad - do your research! – We applied Ultradeck to a new Merbau deck 3 years ago and it was ok. Let's be clear... Ultradeck is NOT decking oil... it is a water-based product that will not soak into timber but sits on top and acts as a protective layer. It is much easier to manage and lasts longer in the conditions... so there is a trade-off. Expect to oil your deck every… Read more

1.5 years with real oil which will actually soak in and protect inside out, Ultradeck can stay on longer and is easy to clean but does not soak in. 2 days on it is still sticky so if you intend to apply this product, preparation is critical!!!! Get that deck stripped back and as bare & clean as possible. Apply, leave overnight on a dry night, apply again early AM and leave for 2 days, do not walk on it. It will take a full 7 days to cure.

Disintegrated within three weeks - DO NOT BUY. NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE – Three weeks ago I restained my merbau deck with 3 coats of Ultradeck. Prep carried out in accordance with instructions. The product has disintegrated within 3 weeks. So many similar complaints on this site. Devastated I didn’t check the reviews before I purchased this rubbish. The product is not fit for purpose and judging by the reviews on this site hasn’t been for years. This company is knowingly selling a flawed product. Zero integrity. Show details

I'm giving 1 star because I don't think this product can be deemed an oil as it's not! Oils penetrate, are easy to apply, and forgiving in the application process. You don't get lap marks or uneven application as the oil penetrates, then you can… Read more

wipe off any excess with a towel. If it rains on an oil it just washes off and you reapply. If it rains when you apply this product you end up having to resand and start again. I've made a complete mess off my deck as it's such a difficult product to use AND IT'S FALSE ADVERTISING TO CALL IT AN OIL!. I can still see the lap marks and rain spots and the finish is very uneven. Not to mention I used the "Natural" which is really Orange! THIS PRODUCTIS NOT AN OIL! CUTEK is an oil and is a great product that's easy to use and enhances the natural colour of the timber.

Follow-up  · Perfect weather conditions. Sanded the deck, used the recommend applicator and process. Basically it's not an oil. Cutek Extreme CD50 is an oil. This product is more of a lacquer type product and you can't apply it like an oil. Should be called a "coating".

Disappointing and expensive – Bought this product 3 years ago to protect and enhance my 25m^2 spotted gum deck, which is fully exposed in Melbourne. The prep work took several days (as it would for any product) then application of two coats was quick and easy. Initially the deck looked fine. But it didn’t last. After 2 years the deck looked terrible; mostly just a dark… Read more

brown film that completely hid the wood grain. Areas of high foot traffic had major flaking.

I’m now sanding it back — much harder and slower than the original prep process — so I can go with a proper penetrating oil that will show the wood grain, even if I have to reapply every six months.

(To be fair: I also used this product on a 10m^2 covered verandah at front of house and it has lasted well. But that wasn’t the reason I bought it.)

My problem is that this product just didn’t live up to what it promised, and has caused me vastly more work to remediate than it originally took to apply.

I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone who has invested in a nice hardwood deck and is looking for something that will last the test of time while enhancing the look of the wood.

A Natural Look – I had already used a Wattyl solid stain on a screen made in 2014 with pine timber. years. Using Intergrain. A new deck was built at the rear of the house made with Quila or Merbau timber in April 2015. I let the resins or oils come out of the wood for about 4 weeks then used the Intergrain Reviva timber cleaner to wash away any remaining oil. I then used Ultradeck in Merbau colour, I wanted a darker look. There were were two reasons for this, the posts had a laminated surface and were a slightly different colour and most of the deck would be in direct sun in the afternoon. I did not want to have to look at a bright surface. I gave the decking, railings and posts 3 coats and since I had enough Ultradeck I did the underside of the deck as well to give extra durability. I had to use the recommended woodfilla in a few places, use a darker filler to match the final result or you will have light patches. I then noticed dark patches caused by oil still coming out of the wood.So I sanded down the top coats and used more detergent, I should have waited for 6 weeks before washing the deck with detergent. Parts of the deck get a lot of sun and these areas are best treated about every 18 months. Waiting much longer than this can cause the surface to deteriorate in places, then a light sanding down is required before treating. The areas getting less sun or shaded can be treated at longer intervals. The underneath of the deck has not been treated for 5 years and is still fine.I have just retreated the whole deck with the lighter tinted Natural Stain and the timber now has a lighter colour.

The deck upstairs at the rear of the house was repaired in October 2017 with Merbau decking. The builder told me the oil would bleed out and stain the concrete below. So I covered the concrete with builders plastic sheet. We had three storms that soaked the new decking and washed off a lot of oil. Some of the oil had reached the concrete below. I used a concrete cleaning liquid mixed with water and applied with a high pressue water spray. This removed a lot of the stain from the concrete. Eventually after a few months the stains have faded completly. I had waited the longer six weeks for the oils to come out of the woood and then rinsed with the Reviva timber cleaner. Plain water would do as a first wash, just like the rain. When the wood had dried I applied 3 coats of the UltraDeck. I decided to use the lighter Natural stain as Merbau has an interesting grain pattern.Natural stain still makes the wood darker but you can see most of the grain and the glare from the sun would not be too bright. I used different sizes of paint brushes to apply the stain. While applying the stain it rained and the rain caused the still wet stain to go a milky colour. I came back a while later and the stain had dried and looked like the rest of the treated areas. It had only rained for a few minutes, the stain had not washed away and had dried ok. I also treated the underside of the deck so one day I would not be looking up at greyed timber.I have not had to treat this underside for 3 years.

The wood usually needs a retreatment one year after the first treatment, then retreat every 18 months or so.I did wait for two years before the most recent treatment but the Ultradeck was then deteriorating in a few places where there had been a long exposure to the sun.I sanded down these small areas before treating the deck and as usual the areas in shade need less treatment. I have noticed that the finished timber may appear to have faded but this is simply a covering of dust and dirt left behind by the wind. This can be swept or washed off to restore the appearance. Ultradeck gives an attractive natural looking finish to timber but it may need more maintenance than a solid stain especially if in full sun. The only inconvenience with this product is waiting the 5-7 days for it to completely dry after the finishing coat. I would use it again.

Great Product from my experience – Applied Intagrain Ultradeck ( 2 coats) on a newly re-laid merbau deck at our rental property more than four years ago, which has a shade sail over, though deck gets plenty of sun. though it didn't look like it needed it, have re-coated ( 1 coat) twice- which was super easy.

Came back to read the reviews tonight after recommending to my brother- so super surprised at comments from some regarding whitening etc. Something I never saw or experienced even with high water volume hitting the deck, hence added my review. I did use the product at my own house on our front door tread a few weeks ago in April and noticed, as it was in full shade and a little cooler,it took two days for the tackiness to stop- which surprised me as never experienced before on the deck.

I am still 100% confident in the product , though my advice would be if concerned and if coating in the shade and/or the cooler months, hold the second coat until sure any tackiness ( if you get it) has gone.

This stuff is bullet proof so walking on between coats isn't going to damage anything and just wipe with damp cloth a hour before the second coat.

By far the best decking oil – As others have said, it is not actually oil based. It is way better than oil or anything else, and I have used them all. It outlasts Cabot decking oil many times over. protection in the mix. You see it when wearing Polaroid sunglasses. Areas not so exposed will last several years before they need recoating. I am redoing some slats that were coated maybe 8 years ago and all I had to do was clean them. The key with Ultradeck is to not leave it until weathering begins to break it down. Regular coats eg every 1 to 5+ years depending on sun exposure will keep the coated areas looking good. It is not so much the number of coats as avoiding the coating breaking down through regular maintenance. This stuff is really good.

Terrible Product – This isn’t decking oil it’s decking paint. If you don’t reapply every year it will break down and you will have to strip or sand back to bare timber. 3 coats on the weatherboards in full sun on the western side of house (1992), is still in very good condition! Where I applied only 2 coats under veranda cover there is some deterioration. I have 35m2 of deck in full sun and 80m2 under cover. I redo 2 coats in the sun and 1 in the covered area about every 2 years. I always clean with a deck cleaning product, scrub and power-wash, and am happy with the results. The decks are tacky for about a week. I am very surprised at all the negative reviews given my experience. I took one star off because it is more expensive.

Do not waste your time and money on this – Hi everyone, please read this before you think about purchasing this product. In 2019 I spent weeks building a spotted gum deck on two levels, a total of approximately 100sqm. When it was completed it looked amazing and I had a recommendation to use intergrain ultra deck, spotted gum. The deck had over a month in summer to dry after using the… Read more

recommended intergrain reviver.

Three coats of ultra deck was applied with the intergrain brush etc and the end product looks great. But that was short lived.

After a few months the deck started going black and mouldy and every time it rained the deck would get worse. I was so disappointed I contacted the timber supplier who turned up with a rep from Boral timber. Both were no help at all and blamed intergrain.

The intergrain rep turned up and agreed that the whole deck would need sanding back to bare timber and start again, she said I should of been advised to use mound preventer as part of the preparation. She supplied all the required product to start again.

Problem with sanding back again was that the 7000 stainless screws had to be unscrewed countersunk deeper and re screwed again another 21000 repetitions.

So a professional deck sanding company turned up and did the job, $1500 out of pocket and the whole recommended process by the intergrain rep begun again, intergrain mould treatment, reviver, dry in hot sun without rain for over a week and another 3 coats of intergrain ultra deck.

Fast forward to now Boxing Day 2020 and I’m looking at having to sand 100sqm of deck again because of this rubbish product.

The beveled edges on each board are turning to straight edges as the sanding process obviously removes decking material, which is making it look rubbish and is also a major safety issue as these edges will become raised in time again and are very sharp and a potential splinter hazard.

This deck was my pride and joy building it to being an absolute pain in the backside as every time I look at it I get annoyed beyond believe. I cannot describe how disappointed in myself for using this product for the second time.

Some of their products I have used are good, however after this fiasco I will never recommend this to anyone. See the attached photos as evidence.

Natural oil that leaves an orange colouring – I have used every decking oil from Sikkens to Cabots, this is my first water based”oil” There is no doubt it leaves an orange finish on all timber. This was applied to a deck that was partially treated pine 70mm boards and cedar 125mm boards. Two totally different timbers. After applying this “oil” they both looked exactly the same! Orange. I would be very careful when choosing this product. Show details

Not bad – This product is a bit misleading calling it an "oil'. It's a water based acrylic, basically a semi transparent paint. Pro's: -Being a acrylic it will last a lot longer than an oil -Gives a decent appearance if you don't mind it hiding most of the grain -Good coverage, 10L did 2 coats on 55 sqm of deck -Dries fast can be recoated same day Con's… Read more

-Fairly expensive -Does not highlight the natural beauty of the timber like a traditional oil does but covers most of the grain -Harder to apply than oil, even in full shade first coat on raw timber dries very fast giving you little time to maintain a wet edge. This can lead to unsightly lap marks if you are too slow and/or don't work an entire board length at a time. 2nd coat is easier but any lap marks will still show through - If you decide to remove it in the future will be a nightmare as it would require complete sanding, unlike a oil.

Overall I am moderately happy with the final appearance knowing a traditional oil would look better but happy that it will be years before I have to recoat. Although I am worried over many years each recoat will further darken the result and end up looking like thick paint eventually.

Basically this a compromise product like any water based acrylic. If you want the best looking deck that shows the natural timber use a real oil. If you want something that will last longer/less maintenance but is more "paint like" then you will be happy with Ultradeck
