Would recommend – My 19 year old cat died earlier this year. She was healthy, active and happy right up to the day she died, the vet said she'd had a stroke and could no longer move. Thing is .. she had never in her life had dental cleaning or surgery. Each time she went for her vaccinations and checkup they looked at her teeth and gums and said they were… Read more

amazingly clean and healthy. She was fed daily (along with a choice wet food) on Hills Dental dry food for cats, and loved it. My other two cats have the same diet, one with healthy teeth and gums, and one with a little tartar which we're keeping an eye on. I mix them with the hairball variety .

  Gastrointestinal Biome

Does Prescription BIOME food have live cultures? What-if... it gets cooked in transit? – UPDATE: Hill's Biome Prescription products are, NOT PROBIOTIC live cultures. They define their products as BIOME support food. (ActivBiome+ is prebiotic fibre) So it is a combination of foods and fibre to feed and rebalance the existing biome in the cat's gut. (information given by Hill's and transcribed from phone call) but an email response… Read more ·  1

also coming to confirm.

We were advised to get this for our cat, from the Vet (who sells it when they have stock) Hills BIOME cat food, wet or dry. This stuff is expensive, $60 per 1.8kg RRP, but so are the other medicines our unwell cat has needed.

I have tried contacting Hills by phone a few times (busy in meetings message) and through websites and chat sites I haven't received an answer by email yet (just the placeholder auto reply), I eventually got an explanation from a Hills vet in USA or should I say a vet that answers questions for Hills, because the following response seems to be a generalised reply for "biome" probiotics.

'The biome product may have active cultures, as can be further explained in the BIOME category of products in USA. Shipping, handling and storage should ensure temperatures of 95 degrees are not exceeded because this will reduce the effectiveness of the biome product......'

Fair enough, that is completely accurate and I also take biome probiotic products myself from time to time and a recommended temperature range is consistent advice.

I initially stopped worrying about temperature because 95 degrees is huge, but then I realised we might be referring to the Farenheight, so consider the Celcius equivalent (ie 35°C).

I contacted Petbarn and Australia Post to check if special handling notes about requirements for transport in cooler temperatures and prescription medication was contained in box.

Australia Post put an enquiry flag on the delivery to get a response from the sender and I just got lip service from Petbarn to say they are sure their staff know what they are doing.

When the parcel was delivered, I asked the courier driver and he didn't know the details of the flag on delivery (that is for the sender) he confirmed it was hot work delivering on Thursday 7th December and the aircon in his van might not make the temp low enough in the back. He didn't have any instructions to keep the parcel of medicine up front where it is cooler.

Any business that knows about shipping and handling of food products and medicines would have training and education about how temperature would affect live cultures and other biome products. Petbarn would know about special handling for live insects and fresh pet food products, but have not thought about equivalent procedures for biome products and medicines.

I have video of recording the temperature inside the box of biome cat food when I opened it. The temperature in the box is above 95 degrees Fahrenheit and there is ZERO consideration for insulation packaging inside the carton. Whoever packed the biome cat food, may as well had the training for packing plastic dog toys.

The Green Cross Vet who answers enquiries for Petbarn has told me that she is unaware of any Petbarn special handling requirements for Hill's products, so that passes the buck back to Hill's.

There are numerous articles stating the case for temperature controlled transportation and storage of biome probiotic products (for humans) and the alternative is costs for the supplier versus benefits for the consumer.

See attached article for relevant discussion of probiotic, but as my update has suggested, the Hill's Biome Prescription products are not probiotic.

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0736/3645/files/IMP-07878_-_ExeGi_Pharma_Cold_Chain_White_Paper_Web_db2661b7-7a78-4f23-80c4-f7a7ffbce01c.pdf?v=1602518810

The updated advice is that temperatures above 38°C or wet environments will degrade the Hill's Biome dry cat food quickly, but the unopened (sealed from manufacturer) product is able to take the higher temperatures for 48 hours and that is due to the fats and oils that are contained in the product more than the prebiotic fibres being the limiting factor.

Two Cats same issue. The price is blowing my mind. So are the results – Both of my cats, one 14 the other 15, were diagnosed with kidney disease about five months ago. I was told both needed a diet change immediately. This didn't go well. Both seemed to have wildly different tastes. It would seem one would settle in on a brand and then all at once reject it. This has been staggering to my wallet and mental health.… Read more

I've got caches of the wrong catfood I stocked up on as soon as one seemed to like it only to have it rejected immediately after I made a bulk purchase. Trust me when i say this. Ive been through them all at this point. Wet food dry food they've dabbled in everything in the prescription diet market. I became obsessed with the freshness of my cats foods my refrigerator and freezer are full of different cat foods. I was convinced for awhile it was staleness that was ruining it for them. Vaccum sealing all that. None of it wasn't making a difference. There was vomiting there was starvation sometimes stretching into three day bouts of no eating. I tried syringe feeding. Always a battle. Over the five months since my cats kidney disease diagnosis I personally have taken up smoking again, I have frequently cried in my car before work especially on days after my boys hadn't eaten much for three days. Ive broken down a couple of times and cried in front of students. My cats are my best friends. Then about two months ago out of the blue one cat settled in on the tuna and stewed vegetables canned food. That's all he's eaten since. One month ago my 14 year old cat decided he liked it too. Not only do they both like it but at this point both cats have now started to once again gain weight. Their fur feels better. They're running around and doing stuff again. It's been nothing short of miraculous. Here I was picking out coffins online crying myself to sleep night after night and suddenly it's like it was again five years ago. The truth is I would pay anything for these results. Im glad it's available but at this point caring for my ailing mom and the 160 bucks I'm going to be paying for hopefully ever to keep these guys fed sometimes I get worried about myself. The peace of mind the kd tuna and stewed vegetables has given me though is priceless. Anything for my boys I love these guys more than i ever thought I could love anything. The extra time means everything to me thanks KD.

Nothing diet or prescription in it, nothing good for cats in this chemical laden extruded road kill/ diseased animals – Kibble is bad for cats and dogs fullstop. Nowhere near enough moisture (10% only - canned or raw has 80%). There is NO kibble that will clean teeth, none. There are no biscuits to clean human teeth, right? Dried seaweed (sticks to teeth and dissolves plaque) or toothpaste for cats and dogs. 'Prescription' is just a name Hill's use on their… Read more

Felines don't eat rice or carrots – We bought the Hills Kidney Care vegetable and tuna stew. Anyone who thinks that putting carrots and rice into a carnivores diet and then charging through the nose for it is ridiculous, and doesn't deserve your money. My cat really likes it – The vet suggested that we begin feeding our cat t/d dental mix as he was starting to show signs of gingivitis. The biscuits are larger than most other cat biscuits we've tried in the past. My cat can be a bit picky but loves t/d. His teeth have been looking a lot cleaner too!

Cats hate the food – It's hard enough when you have a sick kitty with kidney failure and then we try and force them to eat food they don't like. Great for cats teeth and they love it – My Kitty has been on T/D Feline dry food ever since she was one year old, she is now 6. I don't give her this as her daily everyday dry food as she is on Hills Science Hairball control food, she only has 7 pieces in the morning and 5 at night and it has done wonders to her teeth, gums and breath. Love Hills Science Diet food/s, but they can be very expensive.

Lives up to its claims – We began feeding our cat t/d a few months ago, hoping to improve his teeth and gums. Our vet said this food works and she was quite right. Our kitty loves the kibble, has a beautiful coat, and is in fine health. His teeth and gums look so much better! We feed him some meat too but t/d is his main food.

Saving my cat's life – I have a 17yo diabetic cat who suffered acute kidney failure a few weeks back. After switching from the m/d to the k/d, her kidneys are not only back to where they were before the episode, but improved! Her urea and creatinine levels (and phosphates, which were terrible before) have stabilised in the normal range, and for the first time in months… Read more

(even after we started insulin therapy for the diabetes) she's drinking and urinating a normal amount rather than flooding the litter box daily.

Suggestions for owners of picky eaters: she very much prefers the fish cans to the chicken cans, but I've found that fluffing up the chicken a bit makes her enjoy it more- and she can't get enough of the kibble. I know it's pricey, but considering both the financial and emotional toll of having her in hospital during her initial episode, it works out to be even money in preventing this from happening again soon.

Be aware that this can cause weight gain and tooth decay?? – I have given this to both of my cats for many years as the older one (who has now passed away) had some problems keeping his teeth clean. It was recommended by the vet to try and prevent having to have dental surgery.. and it did. Its a good tasting product .. both my cats loved it. At one time it was the only dry food i gave them. Then one day… Read more

when i was buying a new packet the vet nurse told me not to give too much to them as it was coated with a hard coating of sugar to make it harder to crunch down on therefore making them use the teeth properly. She said using it too much can cause weight gain and lead to diabetes and .. tooth decay!!. After that i stopped using it and my younger cat had to have dental surgery .. put her back on it but reduced the amount i gave her to just a few (5) balls in the morning and another 5 at night like a snack for her. I give her a holistic brand for the rest of the day as well as the 'wet' meat food morning and night. She seems happy and i feel its a good alternative instead of stopping it all together.

My cats love it and it works – I've been feeding all my cats T/D and have so far avoided $400+ teeth cleaning bills. One slightly inflamed gum that has not progressed in years. I just got a new kitten and he prefers Science Diet to special kitten food. I'm at odds with the breeder who insists on another brand I can't find, but he's happy and I have reluctant agreement that it's ok for kittens. I buy the biggest bag and they eat it happily

Beats spending money on dental surgery! – I adopted a 3 year old cat from the human society six months ago, who had many issues that i was not told about. up very badly causing him to be very ill all the time. It was not until recently when I got a second opinion by a new vet, that I was told about his gingivitis and that it was making him sick all the time. His vet prescribed T/D because with his illness he had previously I could not afford at the time to get his teeth professionally cleaned at the cost $347 and two teeth removed at $400.

Within 3 weeks time his teeth are looking wonderful, no more getting sick. It actually saved the two back teeth the vet thought she may have to remove. This is the only thing I feed him and he loves it. It is costly but it is well worth the money it does much more then it is suppose to and it beats spending money on dental surgery or two cleanings a year. I would recommend this food to anyone who may have a cat or dog with dental disease or issues. It's something that should be tried for people who cannot get near their cat with a tooth brush, or who have a cat with mild gingivitis.

Good results, but too expensive – I have six cats. None of them will eat raw bones for their dental health, so I add a couple of handfuls of t/d to their usual biscuits once per day. all have perfect teeth. I do not agree with dry only diets, and I don't believe any of my cats like the t/d that much that they'd be happy on these biscuits only. They are far too expensive and they certainly are not an option for multi-cat households except an addition to the more reasonably priced biscuits. They definitely do the job. Overpriced. Only available in small and extra small bags, should have larger, more reasonably priced bags for multi-cat households.

Seemed to be very good for my cat – My cat loved Hill's T/D and never had bad breath. After she lost her sight due to high blood pressure (which the vet failed to tell us needed blood pressure pills right away, the same day, to have a hope of the re-attached retinas to come back to life in time: 7 days later proved too late a start for sight to return), she instead advised food that… Read more

was for her recently observed reduced mobility: Arthirtis control food.

The trouble was her reduced mobility was due in part to weaker hind legs, in turn probably related to a a slow onset of renal failure (barely detectable then by extensive tests when she became blind). I replaced Hill's T/D with the anti-arthritis food, and noticed a few months later the cat had bad breath for the first time ever.

In fact bad breath means bacteria that CAN attack the kidneys: Barely 9 months after we reduced her T/D diet to much smaller or near 0 amounts, due to the reliance on the Anti-arthritis food, the cat was in full kidney failure and had to be euthananized... I feel that with continuing Hill's T/D and using distilled water rather than Evian bottled water (minerals are said to be hard on kidneys), the cat's kidneys would have lasted longer... She was 14-15 so she probably would not have lived much more than one or two years, but the Hill's T/D really seemed truly excellent all her life, and I regret replacing it now... People criticize it for the chicken by-product content and all, but my cat seemed really healthy all her life with it... cleaned teeth and kept bad breath away expensive
