Some Annoying Shortcomings – I think it's fair to say my wife and I have a love/hate relationship with this tent. We love the scope it gives us to camp anywhere we can get to in our 4WD. We love the warmth of the tent even in the coldest of conditions. At the same time, and in hot conditions the design allows for more ventilation than any other tent I have ever used. It is… Read more
solidly constructed and reliably waterproof even when it buckets down all night. In fact this is the second one of these tents we have owned having recently bought a new one. Now for the annoying and significant shortcomings. + The zipper of the cover will become firmly (and I mean put your back into it firmly) stuck in the fabric of the tent during pack up if you are not super careful. The YouTube video by Darche showing the tent being put away is at best wishful thinking and at worst deceptive and misleading. Freeing the cover once it is stuck has for us resulted in either torn tent fabric or a broken zipper tab. The latter is only fixable with a new replacement cover at around $200. + The fly of the tent will flap around incessantly and noisily when the wind gusts above 30km/h which is not much. In windy conditions we tuck half the fly up into the other half to reduce the noise and hope that it doesn't rain. We have been in situations where it blows a gale and rains so we have spent a sleepless night being periodically awakened (ie every10 minutes) by the billowing, slapping fly. + Bedding can be stored in the tent between uses. We keep our pillows and duvet inside. This changes the profile of the tent slightly making it harder to zip up the cover (on one side) and occasionally causes the straps that go over the tent cover to come loose and flap around whilst in transit. There is no real way of avoiding this from happening except to check and tighten the straps when you take breaks from driving. Not so annoying and irrelevant if you don't do a lot of off road driving is the need to periodically tighten various nuts and bolts holding the whole thing together. I have only had to do this once in the last twelve months so I'm not fussed that about it. The mattress that comes with it is of average quality and not as comfortable as advertised. I have read where some people replace it with one from Clarke Rubber or put a thin inflatable or self inflating mattress underneath it. If you do either of these you will need to remove the extra mattress before packing up.
Poor customer service – Purchased Intrepidor 2 and used frequently. Outer fly got damaged and have been waiting for new stock for 2 years. That’s right, 2 YEARS. Purchased a tarp to waterproof in the meantime. When first ordered price was $155. Now $255. Cover zip has failed and all Velcro needed replacing with better quality. Very annoying in folding away as you have to physically tuck in all sides to get the cover on. Not recommended. Show details
Poor design – This is the most annoying roof top tent intrepidoor1400 with sky window due to skywindow requiring fly to keep rain out this fly in any sort of breeze flaps against tent and is guaranteed to wake you at night Show details
Not waterproof – We used it for 3 months road trip, this tent is not waterproof. We took water inside every single Rain. The seams are very bad quality, the water come through. Show details
Questionable quality to value – Really sad to lose my trust in Darche. I bought my rooftop tent a few months ago from them and the cover zipper tore off so the tent is exposed to weather conditions now. I have slept in the tent maybe 10 nights. I submitted a warranty claim, took them over two weeks to get back to me and said the new cover will maybe arrive in 3-4 months without… Read more
any explanation or understanding. I will be selling my Darche tent with customer service and product quality like this. You might as well go for a KINGS brand tent with a price that is a fraction of darche and will probably last longer and I will assume better customer service.
Relatively easy to unpack but more annoying to pack and can get wet inside on heavy rain.
Plenty of room – I have only set up for one night. There is plenty of room inside and plenty of air circulation. I am only 163 centimetres tall so need assistance to erect even though I used a step ladder. There seems to be campers who are happy to assist. Best advise to me was to screw on the ladder first then attach a rope to the ladder to pull the tent up.
Buy direct not through a distributor :( – This is a great RTT, we love it, it's quick to erect and take down, and the manufacturing quality is excellent, but... It arrived with dents and holes when purchased mail order via Snowys in SA. Snowys reported it to Darche and nothing was done about it until we posted negative feedback on both companies Facebook pages. Then neither company… Read more
could agree on who was to blame for the damage and we were the meat in the sandwich. Snowys' attitude was great and they sent a gift as compensation straight away. The Darche rep rang and also offered a camp chair as compensation, but his attitude was aggressive (he wasn't happy about the Facebook feedback) when we visited the Thomastown factory to pick it up. To add insult to injury, when we opened the chair package at home, it wasn't what was agreed during the telephone conversation.
The whole buying experience has been very unpleasant and we won't purchase Darche products again - lesson learnt, we should have demanded a replacement in the first place. We have since ordered several other items from Snowys and their service is great, but it's interesting to see that they now only supply the Darche Intrepidor 2 via in-store pick-up.
Highly recommended – Purchased a roof top tent for 1 night stop overs , so convenient and easy to set up and pack down. Because its on the top of car , you have more room inside car to pack other gear, quality of canvas and zips are very good, have used it in high winds and rain and it kept me warm and dry.
