INEOS Quartermaster Review I don’t buy a vehicle on a whim. By the time I stepped into the INEOS Quartermaster, I’d done my homework—owners’ reports, recalls, forums, and the odd grumble from tyre-kickers. My last ute was a Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior, and while it did the job, I wanted something sturdier for work across Western Australia. The Quartermaster ticked the boxes.
From the start, the build quality stood out. Shut the door and you notice the heft; look closer and even the hinges seem over-engineered. Inside, the Recaro leather seats are supportive and heated, visibility is excellent, and the infotainment screen is clear and easy to use—either via touch or the BMW iDrive dial. The sound system, with the optional subwoofer, is properly impressive.
On the road, the BMW straight-six diesel and ZF 8-speed auto make for smooth, powerful driving. For a 2.7-tonne ute, 0–100 in around nine seconds is remarkable. It’s quiet, comfortable, and stable—even on twisty roads—yet it feels perfectly at home off-road with Carraro axles, locking diffs, and Eibach coils. Fuel use has averaged between 8.3L and 11.8L/100 km, depending on load and driving style.
A few owners complain about quirks, like the raised floor hump or the steering not fully self-centring. Personally, the hump works nicely as a footrest, and I stopped noticing the steering within a week. As for the turning circle—better than a LandCruiser 70, so no complaints.
What makes this vehicle stand out is the component list: Brembo brakes, BMW’s reliable B57 engine, ZF gearbox, Tremec transfer case, Eaton lockers. It’s a line-up you’d normally expect spread across several high-end brands, not all in one vehicle.
I use it daily for work, but the truth is I find excuses to drive it. It’s not just a tool—it’s a pleasure. If I had to sum it up: the INEOS Quartermaster is tough, comfortable, and confidence-inspiring. Not perfect, but close enough that I can’t wipe the grin off my face.
(And no, before you ask, it won’t be swapped for an Aston this year—apparently practicality matters at home too.)
Follow-up · I moved the spare to right side or the tray to allow for more room, also moved the sub woofer from under the right rear seat to give me storage underneath. The rear head rests i moved to behind the left rear seat gives me a better cargo space in the rear seat space. The tray bed i would say is better than the standard Navara doesn't seem to scratch as easy and a lot better quality. I haven't towed with it, but fully loaded you don't notice the weight.
Great solid purpose built 4x4 I have now owned my Grenadier for 12 months and 20 thousand klms. I did have some initial niggles with the car but now it has been a great reliable vehicle which will take you anywhere you want. This is not my daily driver and if you want a city car this isn't for you IMO. We have been to the Pilbara and Western desert in it and would have no hesitation to go as remote as you like.
I ordered the base wagon and added all of the extras I considered I would need.
Thoroughly recommend this vehicle.

After teething issues now excellent – The new design had teething problems. Apple car play needed upgrading, battery issue and a few other issues. Ineos Automotive Australia worked through the issues and now it is now absolutely fantastic. I knew when I ordered this vehicle that it would have issues, what new product does not? Especially when its as complicated as a car to build, and done during the pandemic! It still is quirky, but I understand it and it does what I want. It climbs like a gecko and a mountain goat combined! It tows my 3.5 ton off road van very well and it has been reliable since the first few month of ownership. If you are looking for a mall crawler SUV, this may not be your car, its a real adventure vehicle. Only a few mods done, I have added extra under belly protection, driving light and some electrical outlets. The extra connection points supplied ex factory are so easy to connect up to. My biggest complaint is that they have not released the workshop manuals yet.

Miss the old Land Rover Defender? This makes for an excellent replacement! – When you're a billionaire and Land Rover denies you the ability to continue production of your favourite car, what do you do? Well you make a new car company and improve on what Land Rover missed with their own car. The Ineos Grenadier is a fascinating 4x4 vehicle. It's purpose-built for off-roading. It utilises parts from a bunch of different well known suppliers rather try and develop these parts in house. James Dyson and Apple ditched their efforts to build their own car, yet you can buy an Ineos right now!
I'll get the odd stuff out of the way first. The steering ratio and rack is ideal for off-roading, but the wheel refuses to self centre on the tarmac. Which is something that will take some getting used to.
Additionally, the lack of a driver's gauge cluster might be frustrating for some, but again you can get used to this after driving the Grenadier for a while. And you get automatic windows...but only to roll down the windows, not up (apparently to reduce the need for additional fuses resulting in a more reliable vehicle).
Back to the good things. Build quality is excellent. It has G-Class solidness in its construction. There's an endless list of cool features. Highlights including, placing the battery and electrical components under the rear seats to avoid water intrusions when wading.
A Tremec manual transfer case is a proper flex inside the off-road community. As well as the roof-mounted vehicle controls which will make you feel like you're inside the cockpit of a fighter jet. I also love the 'Safari' windows which offer individual sunroofs above the front occupants, and can be fully removed or just used for air venting.
The BMW powertrains are great pairings, offering great power and a big improvement over the old Land Rover Defender and its 4 cylinder engine offerings.
Off-roading in the Grenadier is effortless. It's sure not as comfortable as the modern Land Rover Defender, but if you're chasing that raw and authentic 4x4 experience, the Grenadier delivers.
The price is on the high side, but if you're opting for something like a Toyota Land Cruiser, you'll need to spend a lot more to get it up to spec of what the Ineos offers for its price.
There's a tonne of support for aftermarket accessories, and Ineos is fully encouraging buyers to go to town on kitting out their Grenadier's.
The initial batch of orders are being fulfilled here in Australia and most buyers seem very satisfied with this unique off-roader that sits between something like a Land Cruiser and Mercedes G-Wagon.
It's a vehicle that's built to improve the original proposition of the original Defender. It absolutely works as a tough off-roader. But it's certainly not as easy to live with in the city compared to the new Land Rover Defender or Mercedes G-Wagon.
