High pitched squealing noise – Within 7 weeks of receiving and using my cooling fan it started making a high pitch squealing noise. I use it In my bedroom at night and the noise makes it difficult to sleep. I was really excited when I purchased this product and now quite disappointed. I went for a Dyson rather than a cheaper product thinking I was buying quality. An expensive… Read more

One year on and it is broken. Malfunctioning and overheating and won’t work once overheated. Don’t buy one of these.
Update it’s been sitting with Dyson for servicing and fixing for two months. No communication.

Very cool - Pun intended and video included – The Dyson Pure Cool Me is exactly as the name states - It purifies and cools the air around You. The combination of the large copper dome and the boastfully vented gunmetal grey barrel gives the Pure Cool Me an elegantly stylish look, with a masculine touch, appealing to all walks of life. Simply put, it is a bloody good looking device. The… Read more
Pure Cool Me comes with a Glass HEPA filter which uses activated carbon filters to capture gases and 99.95% of ultrafine particles from the air around you. I believe they use similar filters in their stick vacuums.
The main unit itself has no button controls so all setting are conducted via the remote control; this retains its uncomplicated and sleek design with the only functionality being the slidable copper dome, to adjust airflow direction either upward or downward.
According to Dyson, the airflow design uses Core Flow technology that projects a stream of air from the dome. This means you can choose between two air flow directions by shifting the copper dome up or down.
Remote Control: The curvature of the remote itself means it sits comfortably in your hand but also flush against the body of the unit when magnetically mounted. The colour also matches the dome which is a very nice touch.
Features Fan speed, oscillation, sleep timer, colour display.
Fan speed - 10 levels of airflow speed from 1 being almost unnoticeable, I presume this low setting is more for air purifying purposes over a long period whilst speed 10 will cool you down in no time. I found speeds 3 through to 5 are quiet enough to sleep with whilst maintaining a cool breeze throughout the night; this is vital in QLD. Speeds 6+ will definitely help cool you down during the day.
Oscillation - A simple but most welcomed feature that allows the head of the unit to pivot side to side maximising airflow. The most amazing thing here is, it moves silently; you actually cant hear it at all when compared to traditional fans which tend to click or rattle as they pivot.
Sleep Timer - This simple option allows you to select between 30minutes up to 8 hours for the Pure Cool Me to automatically turn off. This is great if you like to sleep with it on, have a pet at home, or dont want to worry about forgetting to turn it off before you leave the house.
Display - I believe the screen doubles as the infrared receiver for the remote, so you need to ensure it remains unobstructed. The display is limited in its functionality, only displaying fan speed, an image to illustrate that you’ve either activated or deactivate the oscillator and filter indicator.
Filter Indicator - Upon pressing the ‘i’ button on the remote, the display plays a short 1-2 second animation of the purifier opening and the filter being extracted. It then gives you a basic meter indicating your filter’s lifespan.
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
The remote - Although it looks and feels good, it seems aesthetics overrule practicality here. I feel the buttons should have been positioned on the opposite side to allow access to the controls whist the remote is mounted, instead, you are required to detach the remote and point it at the unit each time you want to turn the unit on/off or change a setting. An extra added premium touch wouldve been to have made the remote rechargeable via induction charging when mounted.
The Filter Meter - This is a bit hit and miss for me because the display infrequently times-out during the animation before actually displaying the meter. Regardless, this is a good function to have.
The Power Adapter - It is very large which may make it inconvenient to those wanting it plugged in behind a couch or piece of furniture that sits close to a wall.
CONCLUSION Dyson are exceptional at designing sleek appliances. The Pure Cool Me is no exception.
Because of its compact design, I have found its best used in my bedroom and have used it every night since I got it. My sleep has improved since using it which is great! This is likely due to both the purification and cooling of the air throughout the night.
Overall, the Pure Cool Me’s size limits it’s capacity for large size/open plan rooms but I highly recommend it for the bedroom.

It's a breeze! – The Dyson Pure Cool Me is not a fan in the usual caged-spinning-blade-pushing-air-towards-large-area sense. Neither is it an air conditioner that lowers the ambient temperature of air in a room. So, if youre looking for an appliance that does either of these things then you would be better off looking elsewhere. The type of situation where the… Read more
Cool Me excels in is either on a desktop or bedside personal space. Ive been using my Cool Me for just over a month now and I have it on the floor, approximately a metre beside my bed, where I have it on in its oscillating mode. My use of the unit coincided (luckily!) with the hot weather and nasty smoke which has consumed much of Sydney over the last five weeks or so.
The Cool Me does not blow air at a furious rate to a wide area but rather, using some pretty advanced aerodynamic principles utilised in aeronautical technologies, directs a narrow path of air either in a fixed direction or oscillating in a wide arc (around 70 degrees). Placed approximately one metre to the side of my bed, and with the angle of air directed in the Up setting, the arc of the oscillation is sufficient to project air to cover a little more than my 177cm height and at the correct angle up from the ground to my body.
All settings are controlled via a little remote control unit (which also conveniently magnetically attaches to the front of the Pure Me). Settings available include: power on/off, fan speed (from 1 to 10), oscillation mode on/off, sleep timer (up to 8 hours) and filter information.
I have been setting the fan speed to between 2 and 3 when I go to sleep. At those speeds, the air flow is whisper quiet and is best described as almost like a gentle breeze very comfortable to sleep to. In fact, the Pure Me is very quiet up to about setting 5. Above 5 and the noise level is more noticeable but, even at 10, never very obtrusive. It depends on what sort of air flow you feel comfortable sleeping to. For me, the directed air flow at the lower settings offers me a deliciously delightful and gentle zephyr-like flow of air while being almost soundless.
Additionally, the Pure Me contains a large internal activated carbon and glass HEPA filter which the literature states filters out some 99.95% of ultrafine airborne particles! Very impressive and highly useful in the context of the awful and highly toxic smoky Sydney air during the last month. This has definitely helped with my asthma, which has been triggered when I have been outdoors during smoky days, and also by dust. Even though the filter does need to be changed and does cost just under $AU100, Dyson suggests that it would only need to be replaced after some 12 months running at 12 hours daily! As I only use it for sleep time, the filter would probably last me well in excess of 2 years, given that it would only be used during the warmer months of the year! That said, I could also use it just as an air purifier in the cooler months.
In summary, I love the Cool Me given its quiet operation and lovely gentle-breeze-like air flow. The 10-speed fan control is so customisable and I much prefer the gentle breeze of the unit to sleep to rather than my previously-used bladed fan. A definite additional positive point is the fact that the air flow is filtered, which has in large part helped me with my asthma during the current crazy bushfire season in Sydney, and also for reducing airborne dust. I understand that it also filters out pollen to help those with allergies to pollen thankfully, that does not include me. My sleep now has never been better! Due to its high price, I strongly suggest that you sample the Cool Me for yourself with a Dyson dealer prior to purchasing. You might just end up loving it as much as I do!
Safety a surprising key feature – To get an understanding of who this has been reviewed by, we are a small family with 2 very young children and a large inside dog. My husband has allergies to dust, and while not severe can cause great discomfort when they flare up. Before I get into the detail I have to say that overall my favourite and surprising aspect of this fan is the… Read more
design of the machine itself and how safe it is. There are simply no blades for my young children to stick their fingers in like there is with the traditional style pedestal fan and to me this is a huge and ingenious design feature. Hats off to you for that Dyson! When my youngest climbed onto the desk and sat next to the fan it took me a few seconds to realise that had this been a traditional fan the spinning blades would have been a great draw card for her, and it would have caused me great panic. The worst the kids can do with this fan is break it. I feel completely at ease.
In terms of the purifying factor, I can't say that I noticed a difference. I will say that on one occasion my husband woke up sniffly from allergies and instead of taking medication, which would have been his normal go to, he went and sat in front of the fan. The allergies went away. Knowing how his allergies have flared up in the past he can only attribute this to the purifying aspect of the fan. Now into the detail:
Price - When you compare the price of this fan, currently on sale for $399 through Dyson, it is a lot more pricey than a pedastal fan, or comparable to the installation of a ceiling fan. I find our ceiling fans more effective overall, however they don't come with the features that this fan does. This may be a better option for someone renting who may not have the option of installing ceiling fans.
Remote - I'm not a 'fan' of the fact that if you lose the remote you can't operate this machine unless you purchase another remote. There is no inbuilt backup. Cost of a new remote from Dyson is $25.00. Great to have the magnetic strip to attach the remote to.
Safety - As I've already mentioned the safety aspect of this design is a real winner for me. I'm impressed.
Portability - It is light and portable and the ergonomic design makes it comfortable to hold and move around without fear of dropping.
Display & Functions - What a great surprise to find that the display is sensitive to light, so at nighttime when the lights are off, the display automatically turns off. When the lights are turned on, or it is daylight, the display turns on. Perfect for fussy sleepers like me who like to think they're sleeping in a deep, dark cave at night! The timer function is so easy to use, increasing fan speed or checking filter level is again, super easy. The simplicity of use makes it possible for anyone to operate.
Filter - Getting to the filter is really easy. I am not the most technical individual (probably an understatement) and I was able to check the filter without any instructions. We have had this fan going for at least 8 hours a day, for the last 4 weeks and there has been no change in the level of the filter. On examination I can notice a very slight discolouration of the filter, but the indicator bar on the display shows that it is still at it's lowest level. A new filter is $99 and at this stage I think that's not a bad replacement cost given how long it looks like it will last.
Fan - the fan itself has a nice consistent breeze, more comparable to that of an airconditioner than a fan. Changing the direction of the fan is simple with a slight push up or down on the face of the fan itself. This is a fan that is MEANT to be touched - did I mention how much I love that it's safe to touch?
Packaging - I noticed and really appreciated the fully recyclable packaging.
Design - It's a sleek modern design. We ended up with the gunmetal and copper fan which doesn't suit the decor of our home, but would certainly suit some modern homes and given it was a lucky dip this is really a non-issue. We had some laughs with friends about the design, who thought we were mad keen on beats and had invested in a hard core speaker. The mind boggled as to what this machine actually was. If nothing else we had a great laugh about it!
Plug - It's really big. I'm not sure if there's a reason behind it as the plug for our Dyson vaccuum is the same. While appearing bulky it does manage to be sleek so that it actually doesn't impact on other plugs in the socket/powerboard.
I've given this a 3 out of 5 because I can't give it a 3.5. I've given this score due to price, inability to really determine the impact of the purification system, and the sole reliance on the remote to operate. Overall it is a great machine, with some thoughtful and innovative features that really impressed me.
Works so well, going to buy another. Perfect for allergies – Bit of a backstory with this: My husband suffers from terrible allergies, hayfever, dust, animal dander etc. He constantly wakes up and scratches his eyes and always has a runny nose. He has an anti histamine everyday to help keep his symptoms at bay. So we thought we'd try this and see if the HEPA filter made a difference. Without exaggeration,… Read more
I can honestly say it was magical. Within the first few breathes of turning it on, he felt he could breathe more deeply and clearer. Thinking this was just a placebo, we tested it out over the next few weeks. Each time in a different room. In the bedroom, he always used to wake up with scratchy eyes and a runny nose. Whenever we used the Dyson Pure Cool Me in the bedroom, he would wake up without these symptoms. When we'd move the device to his office, again, no more runny nose.
We recently had a lot of bushfires and as soon as he'd step out of the house, runny nose, itchy eyes. Then coming into the room with the purifier, after literally 2 minutes, symptoms would go. He's even reduced the frequency of having his anti histamines. From this perspective, I am totally thrilled that this works for him. We would like to get another to keep them stable in each room. In saying that it is a very light device and can be moved easily.
The device itself is very simple to set up with clear instructions. It looks gorgeous and sleek, akin to a new modern computer. The fan noise is very quiet. This was important for us as my husband doesn't like background noise. What was interesting was that he compared the noise of the Dyson Pure Cool Me to his Macbook Pro fan noise and they are comparable only when the fan is cranked up to number 7. Generally we keep it on level 1-2 and it keeps the air fresh quickly (under 10 mins) in a room of about 4x5m. The device does go up to 10 levels displayed on an LCD and has a cute remote that is magnetic, controlling the speed, oscillation, timer and power.
There is a filter inside the machine, which can be replaced, usually around 1 year depending on the usage. We have ours on 24/7 so it may be quicker, not too sure yet.
One thing to note is, it doesn't particularly cool the air like an air conditioner would so you'd have to have the AC on for that purpose. It does such a great job at purifying the air that this is only minor in comparison.
We couldn't be happier with this product and I'm so grateful it is exists purely for health benefits. Definitely recommend if you are like my hubby with terrible allergies.

moving the dome Up or Down.
Sleep timer 30 min - 8 hrs.
Remote control included, which magnetically attaches to the Pure Cool Me.
LED display: A small LED display located on the bottom front area of the Pure Cool Me.
The Review: For quite some time I have been considering purchasing myself an air purifier, due to severe allergies all year around, so I was excited to have the opportunity to trial the Dyson Pure Cool Me and provide my unbiased review.
Delivery: The Dyson Pure Cool Me product arrived via courier in the original Dyson product packaging box, shrink wrapped in a clear plastic with the shipping sticker attached.
I was surprised that the appliance wasnt delivered with the additional protection of a cardboard shipping box, which is the first time I have ever received a delivery via courier of any product arriving in just the products packaging. Nonetheless it was delivered without any visible damage to the outside.
PDF: I was sent a PDF file via email with the Pure Cool Me product description to read about functions & key features of the product: Some of the information was incorrect and I was surprised that this had been overlooked by Dyson.
The PDF states in product description: Dyson Pure Cool MeTM personal purifying fan heater is a purifier and cooling fan designed for focused, personal airflow, precisely where you need it.
I double checked the Dyson website and there was no description mentioned for the product being a fan heater and cooling. So this was simply a typo.
Pure Cool Me set up: Easy to set up right out the box. Simply plug in and use the remote control to navigate through the functions.
The yellow card with the QR code to scan thats supplied inside of the product box did not work after repeated attempts. So I gave up trying to get that to work.
Overall impressions: The remote control is very frustrating to use! Fiddly, small and not at all user friendly, especially in the dark when youre half asleep and wanting to change the fan speed or start/stop the oscillating feature. Be prepared to fumble, drop and become extremely annoyed when using the remote control in the dark. The control buttons are barely raised to feel which buttons youre selecting. The LED screen is quite small and if you wear glasses then you will need those beside the bed to see what youre doing.
Visually Impaired Consumers: Not at all designed as a user friendly product for visually impaired/blind consumers who will not be able to see the LED screen to figure out what settings are being pressed on the remote.
The remote control needs much improvement in design and functionality. I feel that Dyson put more focus on a minimalist design instead of creating a remote control that was practical and easy to use. The remote control needs to be re-designed.
Magnetic Attachment: Removing and attaching the remote from the Pure Cool Me is also problematic in the dark.
Cooling effects: As good as any desk/pedestal fan. Not better in any way compared to a much cheaper regular fan. The air stream is very pleasant as it blows over you on low to medium fan speed settings. Think of it as being similar to a nice gentle breeze. Fan speed settings above 7 do not really feel any nicer or different to a regular fan, in my opinion.
During Very Hot Summer Temperature: Myself, would not recommended as the only choice for relief of heat during very hot summer temperatures. At home, I have a powerful Mitsubishi Electric R/C air conditioning unit in the living room and had that running on full speed throughout a few nights during a recent heatwave to try and get cooler temperatures to my bedroom as well as using the Pure Cool Me and was still waking up constantly hot and sweaty with the Pure Cool Me blowing directly on me without oscillation.
In my opinion, this product will be fine during the milder summer temperatures but dont get your hopes up for this to be the only solution for keeping you cool in hot temperatures.
If you do not have air conditioning at home to use as well as the Pure Cool Me, I suggest looking for an alternative product that is around a similar price tag to provide real effective relief during the very hot summer temperatures. My honest suggestion would be to consider spending your money on a portable air conditioner or portable evaporated air cooler to have in the bedroom and not just rely on the the Pure Cool Me for keeping yourself cool on those hot summer nights/temperatures. So please keep that in mind.
Air Purifier & Odour Control: I have noticed a very slight improvement with my allergy symptoms since using the Pure Cool Me, but definitely not enough improvement to recommend this product for the air quality benefits alone.
With recent bushfires in the Adelaide Hills and a couple of fires in suburbs approximately 25 minutes away from my house, I noticed some smoke smell entering the house which caused eye irritation and coughing. I kept the exhaust fans running in the kitchen and bathroom the entire time to try and minimise the smoke in the house which helped quite a lot, as well as running the Pure Cool Me in the bedroom when I was in bed, but I noticed that the Pure Cool Me was just blowing a smoke smell directly in my face, so I changed the direction of air flow upwards and left it that way until I woke up in the morning. I woke with a runny nose and itching eyes.
Since the Pure Cool Me is not designed by Dyson with purifying a room in mind, such as a small bedroom, I do not feel that purchasing this product is worthwhile for the air purifier benefits.
Given the Pure Cool Me price point, I honestly would prefer to spend my money on an air purifier that has been highly recommended, an industry leader, and is specifically designed to at least purify the entire room. I feel that there are much better options available on the market for around the same price.
In saying that, I do not consider the Pure Cool Me a must have for an air purifier, especially if you suffer from severe allergies as I do, and I suffer with allergies all year around.
No Air Quality Monitoring: This product also does not have anything to show the quality of air purifying being carried out to give an indication of whether it is doing a good job or not. Instead we rely simply on what Dyson says it can do as far as air purification.
Given the fact that the other Dyson air purifier fan models provide up to date information on the quality of air, I am left wondering why this particular model didnt have that feature included. For me this is greatly disappointing. Considering it is promoted as an air purifier & fan, I would have thought that it would make sense to also include an air quality monitoring feature with the Pure Cool Me.
The Verdict: Not particularly user friendly. Limited capabilities and offering little benefit to the consumer, at this recommended retail price point. The replacement filters are also an expensive additional requirement to take into consideration which are not like the r/c HEPA filters in my air conditioner that can be regularly cleaned to maintain the quality of air.
I would love to see Dyson offering a stand alone air purifier system that is both powerful, efficient and competitive in price with other air purifier products on the market. I would definitely consider purchasing one if Dyson decides to design and manufacture such a product!

Helpful for small spaces – The Dyson Pure Cool Me is a smart fan that has a HEPA filter - but no visible moving blades. When opening the box it is a single piece unit, with the Remote and Power cable separate. The HEPA filter is pre-installed in the machine, but it is quite easy to take the top off to access this. The remote is simple and has all necessary controls for the… Read more · 3
machine - fan speed, on/off, oscillation on/off and information. The information button toggles between the fan speed and the status of the filter, it does not do any more complex analysis of the air quality like it's bigger brother the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool.
With the Gunmetal/Copper colouring that we had, the remote is quite difficult to read in lower lighting, as the printing on the remote is in white. If the buttons were gunmetal instead of the copper colour, it would be a lot easier to read! I struggle terribly to see the buttons in dimmer light.
At the end of the day, this device is basically a complex desk fan but the focused air coming out of it has been filtered - and this is a very nifty little feature, whereby you can change the position of the airflow simply through moving the top of the fan at the touch of a finger. But when you are in a larger room, as soon as you move positions you are in unfiltered air, which is not as useful if you have allergies (or, in the recent months, the presence of significant amounts of bushfire smoke). I in fact did not like the air from the Dyson Pure Cool Me directly on me so I did not find this an issue, but I could see how it might affect someone who would prefer to remain in the stream of HEPA-filtered air.
As it does not do the analysis of particulate matter being filtered you don't have an auto mode, so you simply have to select a fan speed and let it work. It does work well as a personal fan, but it is ideally suited to a small room (no more than 4m x 4m), where it is able to filter all the air in the room rather than just filtering the small amount that it is blowing out. I have found it does well in my young son's room, which is rather small with a low ceiling (so we can't have a ceiling fan in there). I have definitely noticed an air quality improvement in his room - but some odour still remains. However, it doesn't actually 'cool' his room. Not at all, really. We have another bladed fan on in the corner of his room to move the air around during the day and cool it down during Summer (because his room is too out of the way for our main RCAC unit to reach), but the bladed fan is too noisy at night so my son likes having the Dyson Pure Cool Me on at Speed 3 overnight. There is a difference in air quality when I go in his room first thing in the morning, but the air progress dissipates quite quickly once the door is open. Perhaps a sign that it is best used in a smaller, closed room. We've tried a couple of different air purifiers in his room, and he likes the Dyson Pure Cool Me the best, not just because it looks cool (!) but also because at night, the light goes off on the dial and he prefers sleeping in the dark. Other air purifiers have little lights on them permanently and this light annoys him.
The ability to adjust the fan through 10 separate power levels definitely makes it more useful than a standard desk fan for use at night (although fan speeds any higher than 4 could be getting a little loud for some people).
Not having any visible blades makes it very safe around young children. Bladeless fan technology is a must for anyone with children.
The remote connects magnetically to a designated space on the front of the machine so you don't lose it, which is a useful feature, as is the light-level detection which turns off the display when it is in a dark room. I really like that function.
Even with a carbon filter, it does not seem to filter odours particularly well. This proved to be a disappointment when testing it in my husband's office, where it had no effect on the fumes from the 3D printers. However, it was very useful in my health professional treatment room at work! I have a range of patients in over the day - with a range of smells! I definitely notice a positive difference in the air quality, and even the odour, especially at the end of the day, when using this air purifier. Without it, I normally notice the air being a bit 'thick' after a day of seeing patients. My windows don't open at work and so all I have is an RCAC unit to heat/cool and mix the air. So now I am buying a second Dyson Pure Cool Me so I can have one at work and my son can have one in his room! And at least I know no little children's fingers will be being caught in the blades of the fan at work, either. At number 5 fan speed, the loudness didn't bother me or anyone in my treatment room. And it's really portable - easy to take between home and work should you so wish.
This is a useful fan, but I'm not sure that the Dyson Pure Cool Me would be for everyone. It's a glorified desk fan that looks pretty cool...but if it was $150 cheaper, I think a LOT more of them would sell. I don't think it does a good enough job on the whole to be worth the asking price of almost $500.
I also think there will be quite a few disappointed people given it doesn't really 'cool' you - I think the marketing name could've been done a lot better. If you are wanting a fan to cool you then there are much cheaper options out there, and if you are wanting filtered/purified air, again, there are better options out there - but on the upside, very few look as cool as The Dyson Pure Cool Me or have such a good sized HEPA filter & carbon filter for the size of the fan.
This is a very good personal fan – I have now been using the Dyson Pure Cool Me fan for a few weeks now and would confidently recommend it to anyone looking to replace or update a personal-style fan for bedrooms, desks etc. We tend to use the fan all night to keep air moving in our bedroom overnight to keep it cooler. The fan generally runs daily from 10pm to around 6am. … Read more
Initially when using the fan I was having difficulty trying to justify the costs and to see where the value was in it (What makes this better than the Box Fan we were using before????) and then the fires started.....
I didn’t quite realise just how efficient the filtering was on the fan until we were impacted by the smoke due to all of the bushfires. I normally open doors and windows in the house and one day I had to shut them all up pretty quick smart. I popped this fan on in the bedroom and walked out of the room. I returned a couple of hours later and could clearly tell the difference between the smells in the bedroom compared to the rest of the house. It really did do a good job of clearing the smoke-smell out of the bedroom, so I proceeded to move the fan around the rest of the house! What I have also noticed is that the cooking smells that end up in my bedroom (design of the house means that cooking smells end up in our bedroom) are drastically reduced or eliminated when we run the fan for a few hours in the evening.
I have also noticed a mild to moderate reduction in stuffy nose etc in the morning, which I am thinking is due to the air being cleaner in the bedroom, overnight.
Noise-wise, this fan is superior to anything else I have used. I find it very quiet for the amount of air it moves around our very large bedroom.
For me, the positives are: -Design - it looks very cool -Noise very, very quiet -Performance - I get much more superior performance on speed level 6 of this fan than i did on the highest speed of our old box fan -Packaging - it was packaged beautifully and everything was recyclable. -Controls - I love that it turns the screen off by itself at night
Things that could be improved -Controls - it would be handy to have a simple on/off located on the actual fan, so that you don't have to use remote control all of the time -Power adaptor - its MASSIVE and I did have some difficulty using it in power outlets in my home that are located in the skirting boards.
EDIT: Have been using it for a while now and really do still think its a great fan! BUT that remote control is really tough sometimes. I have bad eyesight and find it REALLY difficult to see what each of the functions are. If it was Backlit, I think that would be awesome!

Works fine but lacks the features to justify its high price tag – Pros: * Contemporary styling * Impressively quiet operation * Safe from curious fingers * Compact size * Easy to use * Seemingly effective filtration Cons: * Operation only from remote controller * No smart home integration * No air quality sensing or reporting * Very expensive for the basic feature set Bottom line: An attractive and very quiet… Read more
small air filter/fan unit that simply lacks the smarts and features to justify such a high price.
The Dyson Pure Cool Me is a air purifying fan, aimed at personal use on a desk, bench top or bedside table, rather than serving full rooms. It should be clarified from the outset that the Pure Cool Me 'cools' simply by moving air about like any other regular fan - it isn't an air conditioner, either through refrigeration or evaporative means.
Of note is the lack of erroneous plastic packaging in the Pure Cool Me arrives in. Nice to see manufacturers finally taking real steps to reduce non-recyclable waste. Alongside the unit itself, the substantial cardboard box contains a power adapter, the remote controller and a guide pointing you online for instructions, should you need them. Spoiler alert - you probably won't.
The unit is roughly the same size as a small waste paper basket and (as some reviewers have already noted) is styled similarly too. Its footprint isn't as small as you'd think, though compared to a standard 30cm fan it is noticeably more compact thanks to its internal fan unit and domed "Core Flow" diffuser. It was able to share space alongside a lamp on my bedside table no worries.
I received the copper-accented black model which certainly has a very sleek, modern look; a silver-white option exists for those who prefer a more subtle, domestic appliance look that won't scream attention to itself. Build quality is typical Dyson - high quality plastic throughout. The unit feels reasonably solid and has a decent heft to it without being overtly heavy.
Other than plugging in the sizable power adapter, there's no assembly required. The combined HEPA/carbon filter comes already installed. The small remote controls all functions - power on/off, fan speed (from 1-10), oscillation (through a 70-degree range), sleep timer (15 mins to 8 hrs) and a 'filter status' function which shows remaining filter life on the unit's circular display. When not in use the remote can be docked with the unit via a magnetised spot on the front.
The remote itself is convenient and works as expected, but raises a few usability issues. Namely, it's the only way to control the unit - there are no physical buttons on the Pure Cool Me itself, only a display- so if you lose it or damage it somehow, you'll have to get a replacement. The remote itself is quite small and with small, flush buttons that lack any kind of tactility for people with less than ideal eyesight. Lastly, the button icons aren't backlit; sounds trivial but I found myself often using the Pure Cool Me in a darkened bedroom, and being able to see what button I was pressing would have been helpful.
In use, probably the main surprise is how quiet the Pure Cool Me is, compared to typical three-bladed fans. At maximum speed (10) it emits a reasonable roar - more of a dull white noise, minus the helicopter-esque high frequencies - but as the fan speed is reduced, the noise output drops dramatically. At speeds of 5 or less, still emitting a useful stream of air, the unit can't be heard over the usual noise levels of a house during the day. At 1, with the oscillation function off, the unit can barely perceived at night in silence within a metre of your head. As someone who likes a bit of cooling breeze over them while sleeping during the summer months - yet has a partner who can't stand the noise of our wall mount air conditioner on overnight - this is probably the aspect of the Pure Cool Me that has impressed me the most.
Directing the airflow is simple enough; the dome shaped 'Core Flow' head is simply tilted by hand through a small range of movement that aims the air stream from just below the horizontal to about 45 degrees up. The bowl shaped head moves through a set 70-degree range of motion, but only at a set speed - control is strictly on or off.
The PureCool Me uses a combined HEPA and activated carbon filter, to remove bothmicroscopic particles and various gaseous pollutants from the surrounding air. Each filter is rated at 12 months lifespan (based on 12 hrs per day usage)with a replacement cost of approximately $100, which isn't exactly cheap, but HEPA rated filters are expensive to manufacture and realistically, most people will be getting a couple of years out of each filter.
As the Pure Cool Me lacks any kind of pollutant sensors or monitoring (unlike its larger brethren) and not personally suffering any particular allergies to dust, it's been difficult to gauge the effectiveness of the unit's filtration capability. We have had a few days where smoke from nearby bush fires has permeated our house; placed in our average sized bedroom the Pure Cool Me did a good job of clearing the smoke smell within 20-30 mins at a low setting, which certainly was appreciated.
The lack of air quality sensors, however brings up what I think is the Pure Cool Me's main failing - its lack of 'smart technology'. If it were a $150-$200 unit then this could be forgiven; it's a wonderfully quiet fan with a seemingly capable filtration system, and an attractive design that's also safe for curious fingers. But at an original asking price of $499 - and even now reduced to $399 in most stores - the inability to monitor and automatically adjust its output to various pollutants feels like a missed opportunity and makes it hard to justify the Pure Cool Me's premium pricing. This seems especially stingy given Dyson's larger fans already offer this functionality, so the tech could have been provided.
Along similar lines, the lack of smart home connectivity, with Google Home/Nest, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa or even Dyson's own app, is a glaring omission in any domestic product in 2019-2020 with 'best of breed' aspirations. I'm assuming Dyson felt that the Pure Cool Me's 'personal use' design didn't warrant such features, but despite its smaller size the unit is more than capable of turning over the air in a decent sized bedroom or office without much trouble. The ability to monitor VOCs, particles, smoke and carbon monoxide - and have both the unit and a connected smart network react - would have made the Cool Me a great option for bedroom air quality, for example, to ensure safe levels are maintained or raise an alarm if not.
The fan and filtration aspects of the Dyson Pure Cool Me work perfectly well -its noise levels especially are impressively low - but without any monitoring or smart home functionality I find it hard to really recommend it for the price being asked. As such I'd give serious consideration to either paying a bit extra for one of Dyson's larger, full featured units, or spend half as much on an equivalent unit from another manufacturer. Dyson's engineering prowess is usually worth a premium over lesser designs, sure, but in this instance, not that much.

I quite like it! – I received this air purifier as part of the ambassador program. I have to say it couldn’t have come at a better time. I live in an area that’s constantly smokey from the nearby bushfires, we’ve been trying to keep the house closed up so we don’t have such bad air inside but some seems to get it anyway. In my family we have 2 who suffer with… Read more
asthma, the smoke has been quite a problem for my daughter especially. Just before receiving this we had bought one of those cheap little air purifiers from a chemist, it did the job but it seemed to work quite slowly, taking hours to clear a room and we had to cover the gap under the door to keep it completely clear.
Once I got this Dyson I swapped the generic one in her room for this and turned it on before she was due home from her grandmothers place, not only did it work a lot faster but we didn’t have to wait hours for it to clear the room again if someone had to open to the door for a minute!
Before she came home I tested it in my significantly larger room, it’s the kind of thing thats hard to notice if it’s working... until you leave the room! Sit in a room with this for an hour then walk into the rest of the unfiltered house where it smells of smoke the minute you leave the room, then you know it’s working.
One last situation I found it useful for, my teenaged son’s room, I don’t know if he’s forgetting to brush his teeth or just having some teenage hormones rapidly multiplying in his sleep, but lately, every time his door opens in the morning, a terrible smell emerges, I gotta walk around spraying the hall with glen 20.
I asked if he would test this for a night, he thought it would be fun, I showed him how to direct the fan and use the remote, then we all went off to sleep. The next morning I quietly open his door, testing the air carefully, there was only the slightest hint of that... whatever it is... I was quite surprised to say the least, that smell is extremely strong and takes hours to dissipate, this was barely noticeable. At that moment I wished I had 4 of these things because we seemed to need them everywhere.
In regards to the ease of use and design of the product, I am quite satisfied, the product looks nice in my opinion, though my daughter said it reminded her of the little bin we keep in the bathroom. I don’t think I’ve seen a dyson product that I thought was ugly so perhaps I just have similar tastes to their design team, I dont know, I honestly love their stuff. I was worried about the remote getting lost, I’m sure if I’d actually read the instructions I’d have seen that the remote is magnetic and attaches to the front of the device a lot sooner, it’s actually an awesome idea, not only because the remote is so tiny and light and would be easily lost, but it looks great when attached to the device.
I saw some other reviews addressing the plastic ‘dome’ part for directing air flow, some seem to think it feels flimsy or clumsy, while I must say it feels quite UN-Dyson-like, it does the job, it just feels a little under thought.
When I used this device overnight, I sat it on my bedside table, with the dome slid down, it was the perfect height to skim across the top of our bed, sending nice fresh air right into our breathing space. If the dome was slid upward, it was a good position for providing a cool breeze while you were just sitting on the bed.
love ! great for my dust allergy & the dreadful bushfire smoke – i rent a crappy 1970s apartment block (bad air.) in albert park ,melbourne. and we cant have split systems-owners corp. says aesthetic reasons. so ive tried a few different brands of portable air purifiers ( i.e beurer lr200/cli-mate ap20 ) They were ok but unfortunately still audible when sleeping. Cool Me (P.C.M) and noticed a profound improvement in the quality of the filtration - thankyou Dyson. And its silent on the lower settings : ) ( the only criticism is the remote is hard to read at night-is grey symbols on the sliver-grey background.) other than that i am so happy that I can breathe easy without distress- that is priceless. - now i want another one for my study : )
Nice fan, unsure of air quality impact – The fan design is nice, with well thought out features like an led screen, easy operation and general aesthetics. The controls were easy enough that my toddler could work it out. The air flow output is gentle and easy to titrate to a flow and direction that suits you. Even on full it doesn’t feel uncomfortable like many other personal pedestal… Read more
fans, and best of all the ability to control the air flow direction saves your paperwork from being blown away. As a desk fan, it is quite nice.
With the recent air quality concerns from the bushfires, I was interested to see what kind of impact the Pure Cool Me would have on our in home air quality. Unfortunately, it is difficult to quantify this. There is no sensor that tells you if toxins are being taken out of the air (I believe some other Dyson purifiers have feedback telling you the impact the machine is having). The closed room would still smell of smoke, but with the severity of the fires this is unsurprising.
Something to be aware of it the filter requires replacement approximately once a year, with the filters being quite expensive (I believe close to $100). The ongoing maintenance cost is something that should also be considered prior to purchase and is a bit of a deal breaker for me. I also found it annoying that all the controls are on the remote - if you lose or misplace the remote you seem to be stuck with the last function you set it on. The remote also needs to be replaced quite perfectly or the magnets don’t catch the base properly and slips off.
The Pure Cool Me really needs to be thought of as a fan with a purifier as a bonus. Is it a nice fan? Yes it is. If you are a relatively sedentary person looking for a cute personal fan for your desk that you spend a lot of time at and you suffer from allergies, you might find it beneficial. With the impact the bushfire smoke is having on all of Australia, any little bit of filtered air in your home might help.
Better than expected – I received the Dyson in good order and ready to plug. We have a few pets in the house and I tend to wake up with a stuffy nose, maybe due to the pets or other allergies. My wife sleeps with a fan on all the time, I hate the noise of rattling blades, and I have a hard time going to sleep because of it. So I swapped her trusted old fan for the… Read more
Dyson. I wasn’t expecting anything special except a little more quieter. Well there are other good things to say about it. At first I loved the remote control that has a magnet so it has its place on the unit and you don’t loose it because it fell behind the night stand. It is a great little gem that remote, but over time I found it a little annoying because it sticks face against the fan, so you always have to take the remote to switch it on or off. If it had been on the other way, then yes it would have been better, but then there is the issue of the infrared sensor... I am not a engineer so I might just leave it there. Thing is it’s very powerful and you get 10 levels of fan speed plus the choice of oscillating or not. If it was just it I probably wouldn’t recommend the product because I cannot justify the cost. But it has something that a lot of other fan don’t, it has an air filter, and that in itself got me. It is amazingly efficient at filtering the air in the bedroom. As stated previously my wife has the fan on all night, from 9pm to 6am, and I found waking up in the morning without the stuffy nose, my wife uses ventolin in the morning because of a mild asma, from the first night we had it on, no more coughing in the morning. It does a fantastic job at filtering the air in our bedroom. The other good point is that it can be very quiet if it’s under half speed, it’s whisper quiet, above the speed 5 you can ear it working but still way quieter than the old fan. Things to know is that it’s easy to see if the filter needs to be change, just press the i button on the remote and it will tell you the filtering capacity left. That’s where I get a bit unhappy with the product, the cost of running it. On average they estimate that you have to change the filter once a year, the filter is expensive, it’s $60 !!! Ok the unit itself is around the $300 mark and the filter is almost a 5th of the cost of the unit??? It’s not that big, my truck has a bigger filter, and it is cheaper than this one! But time will tell if I have to change the filter after a year, but saying that, it cleans the air before it reaches the fan turbine, so you are preserving the life, the efficiency and the quietness of the fan for a long time.
Last words, if you have pets, if you sleep with a fan on, or simply wake up every morning with a stuffy nose, then this unit is for you. There are some flaws but I still think it’s a very good unit. I believe it will serve us well for a number of years like some of the other Dyson product we own.
Find out how Dyson Pure Cool Me compares to other Air Purifiers
Know better, choose better.
Surprisingly powerful and effective little Purifier – I have to be honest, when I first unboxed my Dyson Pure Cool Me my initiial thought was "there is no way this little unit will be powerful enough for a whole room". After the first use I was pleasantly proven otherwise, it really packs a punch for such a small unit, and the added bonus is it is also filtering the air you're breathing and in the… Read more
month I have been using it have noticed a difference in air quality in the room used (I suffer from mild hayfever and related allergies and symptoms have been considerably less for this time of year). Like most things Dyson it looks a little space age, they certainly put alot of time and effort in designing it (I think it looks awesome) and it is unlike any other fan you will have ever used before. That being said it's incredibly user friendly. Once plugged in the unit is operated using the remote control which conveniantly can be placed on the front of the unit when not in use via the internal magnet so as not to go missing. The button layout is simple and easy to understand with 5 buttons in total 1. Power 2. Information (to access HEPA filter condition) 3. Fan speed 1-10 (+ and -) 4. Oscillation on/off and 5. Timer. I don't think any of those need too much explanation but the timer function is available in preset intervals of 30mins, 1hr, 2hr, 4hr and 8hr and you simply cycle through each until you have the preset time you wish the unit to turn off. Whilst operating at low speeds 1-5 it is relatively quiet and shouldn't disturb sleep, in the higher end though it does become a little noisy if seated nearby, however I've found I never have to operate the fan any higher than 5 to achieve adequate cooling so noise has not been an issue. The front display is clear and easy to read and automatically dims so as not to create too much light in the bedroom at night. Fan direction in the verticle axis is controlled by simply pushing up and down on the central dome surface and its quite impressive the range it has given the seemingly limited movement, testament to it's ingenious design. Access to the HEPA filter is achieved by depressing two recessed buttons on either side of the head of the unit and simply lifting it off, then it's simply a matter of pulling the filter out for inspection or replacement. On the subject of replacement the online instrucional booklet suggests replacing the filter every 12 months and after one month of solid use I would say this is inline with the units own filter health monitoring, however if being used in a dusty environment you may require new filter sooner. All in all I'm really impressed with my Dyson Pure Cool Me, whilst making a fantastic personal fan, the fact it is filtering and cleaning the air you breath is what has realy sold me. The only real negative I have about it is perhaps the price which may put the unit out of reach for some but if you are looking for a small purifying unit can afford to splurge I would definitely recommend the Dyson Pure Cool Me.
An Appealing New Friend! – One thing I’ve learned about Dyson stuff since getting one of their Animal vacuums last year - my first experience with the brand - is that it has street appeal .... tons of it. I’ve always been a more practical person, usually avoiding glam ... but occasionally it’s true that you can have your cake and eat it too!!! When invited to review this… Read more
product a couple of months ago we were a little hesitant - none of the family suffers from allergies, but ... we do live in a very dusty environment, and combined with the smoke haze from the relentless bushfires the country’s been suffering, the scene was set for an interesting assessment of the first air purifier we’ve ever had anything to do with.
Packaging was efficient and well done. Mostly recyclable. Assembly was straight forward and intuitive. No owners manual ... but the product is so simple to “get” that you won’t need one. There’s heaps of guidance on the Dyson website if you need it. Build quality seems fine, and the colouring very complimentary. Ours is said to be “Gunmetal/Copper”. In reality it’s more of a charcoal black and a copper-leaning-towards-orange. However it looks rich and modern - and has the flair to look good in pretty well any home environment. Power consumption said to be 40 watts .... easily comparable to an electric fan, and a walk in the park for our battery power system. About the only gripe I could offer up to this point is the surely unnecessarily large transformer wall plug that the unit plugs into. This bulky contraption may cause problems if plug space is restricted - as it usually is beside beds!
The upper section comprises what they term the “air head” which does the oscillating and the blowing. This sits atop a vented barrel and locked into place with a press clip on either side. The lower portion holds the very easily removable cartridge type filter - similar in appearance to that of a vehicle’s air filter, and you can see its pleats by looking closely through the vent holes. To swap it out all you do is remove the head, grasp the two visible tabs at the top and lift it out. I understand replacements are exxy ... but having used ours most nights for a few weeks there has been zero visible buildup of particulates, and zero indication on the operating screen’s useful filter replacement gauge.
The unit comes with a remote ... and there doesn’t appear to be a means to activate it other than by remote. It’s small and very light too - so don’t lose it!! In an interesting quirk, Dyson has magnetised the remote at the rear, so it simply clicks onto the lower front of the unit. Nice! Although I tend to leave it beside the bed! Note that the “sweet spot” of the magnet is limited, so you’ll need to match the remote up just right on the front of the unit lest it falls off and annoys the hell out of you. There’s a matching outline template on the unit’s front to help line it up.
In operation the unit is quiet ... likely more so than a comparably powered pedestal fan. It has a very good range of power settings from the barely perceptible to drying the paint!! It can be operated in either fixed or oscillating mode. To adjust the aiming point, simply activate the oscillation, then press the switch again when the air head gets to where you want it to be. The oscillation speed is fixed irrespective of the fan speed. The airflow can also be directed up or downwards in what looks like an extremely limited azimuth, but which in operation is actually quite decent. Like Dyson’s other fans, this model is completely blade-less.
The purifier has a “sleep” function which allows it to run for a preset period to help you nod off to sleep. The presets begin at 30 minutes and range up to a full 8 hours. Bear in mind that this machine is designed to be directed toward a fairly confined area - it is not designed to treat an entire large room. Ideally it would be directed towards people while they work or sleep. Dyson are very upfront with this ... so if you need a whole room purifier, this possibly wouldn’t be ideal simply due to its design brief.
So - how did it do?? Well by sheer chance I had had trouble getting to sleep for days due to long standing, choking bushfire smoke that I mentioned. So the arrival of this bit of kit was timely. I set it up on the floor beside the bed - although it would be equally at home on a bedside table. I found that setting the speed to level 4 was the perfect compromise between airflow and quietness of operation. Set the sleep timer to 4 hours and “bang” ... I was gone. And such it continued for several nights before the air finally cleared. It is true to say that I felt more refreshed on waking too. I doubt this was coincidental.
I feel very confident that if you live in an environment of hostile air quality you would notice a tangible improvement after deploying this purifier - and this would apply even more so if you were a shift worker, for example, where quality sleep was crucial. Would I have bought one prior to this experience?? Probably not - but this decision would have been borne more from ignorance of the existence of this thing and what it can do. Would I recommend it .... if for no other reason than a sleep adjunct??? Absolutely!! In fact you would have a lot of trouble taking it away from me right now!! Mind you ... that bulky plug very nearly took a star from this baby ...
It packs a punch. But is it worth the price? – Now, you’re probably wondering if it’s worth while to purchase one of these Dyson Pure Cool Me fans or should you stick with a cheap pedestal one? Before I had the opportunity to test out this machine, I had an industrial pedestal fan which I bought at Big W for $49. These things are big, heavy and you need to assemble it. I use this when I go to… Read more
sleep. I mean, it does the job but if you can’t sleep with loud noises, it’s useless.
The Dyson Pure Cool Me is a simple yet genius cooling fan. Actually, this fan does not contain any blades whatsoever, yet, it packs a punch. There’s no assembly required either. The only time you need to open the fan is when you need to replace the filter.
If you’re looking for a fan that cools the whole room, this isn’t the one for you, as the Cool Me is more of a personal item that you put on your work desk or as I do, on the entertainment unit in front of our bed.
The packaging is simple. Upon opening the box, you are welcomed with a little remote. This remote is magnetic, which attaches itself to the front of the fan. The remote itself is very basic. You have the on/off button, an oscillating function, timer which you can set when it stops operating between 30 minutes to 8 hours, plus and minus buttons to adjust the speed of the wind force and the info button which tells you when the filter needs to be replaced. All this information is displayed on the tiny LED screen at the bottom of the fan.
Speaking of filters, they do not have to be replaced for at least 12 months and this is from constant usage of about 10 hours a day. They are also inexpensive as you can buy it from the Dyson’s Online Shop for $80AUD.
As you remove the remote, you are left with the fan and AC adaptor. The adaptor is quite chunky but it shouldn’t disrupt your average power board.
I initially tested this in the lounge room. The lounge room is very open. On first operation, I was disappointed about the force of the wind. However, after inspecting it closer up, you can slide the middle part of the fan up and down to control the force.
I was sitting at least 2.5 to 3m from the fan and can still feel the cool wind. You need to be sitting directly in front of the fan though, but I guess this is usually the case with all fans.
We also have 2 cats. Both kitty litters are located in the same area and on that day it wasn’t a pleasant smell. I did notice a difference in better quality air as the fan was turned on.
Next, I placed this in my bedroom. Facing about the same distance away as I did in the lounge room, I could feel the cool wind slightly but only because it wasn’t facing directly in front of me. This is where the oscillating function comes into play as the head swivels from left to right if you turn this feature on. Works wonders.
Thanks to the constant heatwave in South Australia, I was able to test this out with the proper temperatures which ranged around the mid to high 20s at some nights.
As for how loud this fan can get, this can get quite loud if you set it to the maximum speed of 10. Now, I can sleep through loud sounds so this is no problem for me. But if you compare this to an industrial fan as I mentioned in the beginning of this review, its pretty much day and night.
Due to the recent bushfires raging on Kangaroo Island, a wind change has brought the smoke and started blanketing Adelaide. As the night went on, and while I was napping on the couch, I left my air conditioner on all night, unbeknownst to what was happening to the air quality. Unfortunately, this has brought the smoke into the household. Being a bronchitis sufferer, I turned off the air con and immediately retreated to the bedroom and turned on the Dyson. I can tell you this really helped by removing the smoke.
- +3
Surprisingly useful – I was quite sceptical about agreeing to review this fan/air purifier when first asked back in October of 2019. I have air-con throughout the house and haven't seen a need for a stand alone fan for quite a while. But I am a fan of the Dyson stick vacuums and so thought heck why not give this ago. We got the fan in early December, just as the bush… Read more
fires around NSW really started to take off. We were inundated with smoke waking up throughout the night to cough and struggling to clear the air in the house in the morning. Its not really economical to have the air con run 24/7 to deal with the smoke, and also it wasn't actually hot enough at night to warrant having the air con on, so much to my surprise this little air purifier ended up getting used pretty much constantly over the 4-weeks we had to trial it.
PROS: - Quiet at low settings (below 3) and relatively small - Easy to use - Seems to do a ok job of clearing the air in a bedroom, struggles a little on larger rooms - cheaper to run that air con and likely a good alternative in dry, non-tropical areas with smaller rooms, like bedroom at night. - works well as a fan for when air-con is not needed.
CONS: - Can only be operated with remote, which is small, a bit flimsy and could be easily lost. - No manual included, must go online to figure it out. Not a huge deal, as its very simple to operate, but I image some would prefer at least a very simple quick start guide. - Power brick is a bit large - the swing setting did create the some noise, which was a little irritating at night - High price, RRP$499, although you can pick it up for $399 fairly easily. At this price its still very much a luxury purchase.
Overall, if you don't have air con or don't need or want to run your air con then this might be a decent alternative, especially with the significant drop in air quality around many parts of Australia and the need to help remove smoke and other small particles that are now leaking from outside to inside. With the climate worsening I suspect that these types products will increase in demand and popularity, especially once the health impacts start being felt across the community.
Functional & sleek.. is it worth it? – As someone who suffers from hay-fever on a daily basis and lives in the hot tropics, I have used air purifiers previously. The Dyson Pure Cool Me is modern looking, sleek, cylindrical and dome-like design. It could easily fit into a home and look great. I have received the Black & Bronze model to review and it looks rather industrial.… Read more
Personally, I find the pure white model far more aesthetically pleasing and more suited to modern homes. The black on this unit does show dust very easily.
The Dyson Pure Cool Me is quite large for a personal fan. Adjusting the angle is done by sliding your hand up or down on the inner piece. A magnetized remote is held securely to the front of the unit and enables you to control fan speed, left to right motion, set a timer to up to 8 hours and check on whether the hepa filter is clogged with a little visual display at the bottom of the unit. Dyson are great with displaying information through easy-to-understand, engaging visual displays.
If you were just looking to get a personal desk fan/purifier, this is too noisy and far too big to place on a desk beside you. At home, I work in the office and have this positioned about 1.5m behind me on a bench, simply because it is too loud to be beside me when I make phone calls. Air coming out towards me from this distance is not nearly as strong as a normal fan of comparable size. I purifies a decent sized room.
The remote, is an advantage as I can easily shut it off in seconds and have it turned back on within 2 or 3 seconds.
I do love the way this fan can be adjusted. When on level 10 it does blow an OK amount of air and has a small cooling effect. You can angle the 'core' up or down. If you do like a breeze on your face I'd recommend placing it closer than the 1.5m distance I have mentioned above. I've also used this on my nightstand overnight and again, it is quite noisy to sleep through. My husband on the other hand, loves the 'white noise' to sleep to.
Air output takes a little getting used to. If I had a pedestal fan set up, I would feel a direct force of wind or air blowing and likely be a bit quieter (obviously no purification though). The Dyson has more of a "breeze" or "swirling" effect. It does give the 'illusion' of cooler air and feels MUCH more comfortable than a normal fan blowing air in your face.
Regarding it's purifying effects: I have no doubt it's hepa filter is doing it's job and it's nice knowing that the air around me is clean. My home has no bad smells, and when I run the Dyson Pure Cool Me fan I don't notice any smells from the kitchen or my oil diffuser make it up to that room it runs in. The filter is not washable. Which is a little disappointing. I can envisage if you lived in a high pollen count area and kept your windows open the filter would clog quickly (like any other purifier).
I do believe though, that washable filter may not provide the best air purification overtime due to the small fibers in the filter becoming damaged. So it is a small ongoing expense for those with severe conditions that need the best air possible.
Every room in my house has an air conditioner with an Ionizing feature. Without going too in depth with the difference of ionization & purification, I really can't tell the difference when using the Dyson with the Hepa filter as opposed to my air conditioner. When I sleep with the air-con on I never wake with hay-fever until I leave the room. Sleeping with just the Dyson Pure Cool Me fan and no air conditioner on cooler nights were the same, just lacking the comfort of air con.
Obviously the cost of running an air conditioner is higher but I could imagine the long term cost of replacing Hepa filters and using these noisy fans in every room would far out-way the cost/cooling comfort of an air conditioner long term.
People in areas with high levels of pollution or smoke will surely see more of a positive effect with the Dyson Pure Cool Me than an air-conditioning unit with an Ionizing feature. A battery backup would be a great optional upgrade too as these fans seeing as though they are quite portable.
A few things that really disappointed me with the Dyson Pure Cool Fan was the fact that there are no buttons (other than an On & Off) on the fan itself. If you loose the remote, you wont ever get the fan going from side to side again. For the cost, I'd be awfully sad to loose that option!
When using the remote, you also can't remotely adjust the angle up or down (only side to side). This is a downfall, especially when you are 1.5m away and are trying to angle the the slight breeze to hit you directly.
We used another brand medium sized floor standing air purifier in my sons room when he was a baby (a gift from family for my son who had un-diagnosed allergies at the time) and it could be controlled by an App on our phone. We were also able to monitor the room temperature without needing to open his door and disturb his sleep. The Dyson Pure Cool Me fan lacks any form of smart connectivity, and for the price, I do feel like this is a huge downfall. For those in cooler climates it may be worth upgrading to the model above which has heat option and smart technology - For us in the tropics though, we don't need the heat.
Purchasing this falls down to a number of things. Usability, Price & Aesthetics.
If you are wanting an easily portable air purifier and fan, that looks good, then this is probably your go to. It's aesthetically pleasing, capable of purifying a good sized room and doesn't blast you away like a regular fan would, rather 'surround' you with a cool breeze.
In all my years of enjoying Dyson products, I've never had any fail me - other than wall chargers that were generously replaced for me just out of warranty period.
I've run it for about 72 hours now with windows open & closed and the hepa filter level still shows a green tick right at the bottom as it has from day one. If I can get 12 or more months out of this filter I will be very pleased. It is a small price to pay for comfortable fresh air.
I will update this review as time goes by.
A brilliant machine for removing toxic smoke from the air – This little machine has been a 'godsend'. It is helping me survive this unusually hot, smoky 2019/2029 bush fire season. The machine is quiet set on 2 or 3 and easy to sleep with it set on 2, and there is a timer which can be set to turn the machine off after I fall asleep. It also cleared the smoke from my bedroom quickly set on 8, after smoke… Read more
came in the window with a cool change. The machine is easy to move around, sensible to operate and the remote has been intelligently designed, it is lightweight and easy to use. I suffer from breathing airborne allergens or put another way, chronic allergies. I have been diagnosed with MCS. This machine is definitely making a difference and helping me cope with this unusually intense bush fire season. I cannot walk outside without wearing a face mask and sunglasses because the bush fire smoke is toxic to breathe. It is a little early to judge whether it has been effective at removing other airborne allergens, however given it has been so effective at removing bush fire smoke toxins, I think it is working. It is a magical little machine and I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to test it. I recommend this machine, especially for people like myself. It is a perfect solution sitting on my desk, next to my bed or next to me while sitting in the living room. It is an aesthetically pleasing design, easy to operate, lightweight, efficient, quiet and brilliant for sensitive people who suffer from allergies. Thank you, Dyson for making a machine to help allergy sufferers and others who enjoy clean air to breathe.
Bit disappointed tbh – I’m using this on my nightstand. Not actually sure how well it purifies air but I haven’t felt much of a difference. Still a nice looking fan. And on step 1 of 10 it’s pretty quiet. 2-9 are loud to extremely loud but I already saw that coming, as it’s not my first Dyson fan. My biggest concern is that the rotating mechanism started making noise… Read more

Impressed! – I have to admit, I was initially put off by the price but after using this for a couple of weeks in 40plus degree temperatures, I can see the value compared to our other tower fans which just didn’t cut it in the heat. great and it’s not too heavy to move around the house. The remote is small and ergonomic in your hand and attaches to the fan magnetically which is a great feature to stop you losing it. The air stream is concentrated so it actually feels colder than a regular fan and you can easily direct the air up or down. It has 10 speeds from a slight gentle breeze all the way up to a full on blast. It can be left on still or set to sweep from side to side. It has a timer so you can set it at night to turn itself off. Our main air conditioner just wasn’t keeping the house cool when it got to 44 degrees and I usually really struggle with the heat but with this next to me I got through the day no problem at all. The thing I love most is the portability- I really feel the heat so I put it on the kitchen bench while cooking then I don’t have to freeze the rest of the family with the air conditioning on! The Hepa filter seems to work well, we have had some local fires and a lot of smoke in the air but with the fan on,the air inside is smoke free. This would be ideal for anyone who has asthma or allergies. Although this is a personal fan, I have used it in the corner of the lounge room set to sweep and it’s kept us cool. I can definitely see the value in this appliance. It’s fairly quiet as well,on the lower speeds you can barely hear it at all. The only thing is I would probably like a longer cord but it’s still a decent length and possibly some type of indented handle on the back as it has to be picked up from the bottom and although not heavy can be a little awkward. Also, one of these with a battery would be amazing! We have such hot weather in Australia and tend to get power outages and to still be able to use this would be a lifesaver! All in all, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this, another quality product from Dyson.

Healthy companion for all – As a product reviewer for Dyson, I was pleasantly surprised on the Dyson Pure Cool Me. Prior to receiving my appliance, I walked through retail stores to have a little snoop on how it looks and works. Unfortunately, other than the appearance I wasn’t able to see any results. The store I was in, other than it being on display didn’t have it… Read more
connected or was anyone there to answer any of my questions. Personally, I like questioning sales staff to see if they recommend or is it just a sale for them. This is a non biased review, even though I’m a Dyson Ambassador.
We’ll start with the packaging, as you may also see in attached photos that everything in well protected. No hidden compartments or loose sides where attachments fall straight out. Dyson does well in packaging. Instructions if needed are online though. You may either scan or log into Dyson and follow a short video on ‘how to use’. Was totally surprised on how powerful the ‘Cool Me’ actually is. Upon starting, it is on level 10 so a burst of cool air came my way. I was able to adjust whether I wanted the air to be blown (if sitting, say head level or more towards ceiling) this was done simply by sliding the round ball up or down. Also the level of the fan may go from 1 - 10, each to their own comfort. I tried the Dyson in our kitchen where it is always warmer compared to the rest of our home and was extremely rapt. I had it sitting in the corner of our kitchen bench which is near a massive window which is quite warm on hot days and worked very well. Rather than just leaving in centre position, I used oscillating position. For me, I didn’t have the issue of the control not attaching itself onto the unit. The magnet has a good pull when control is at its correct position. This is an added bonus simply because you know where the control is, no misplacing around the home. There is also an “i” icon on the control, this shows the level of the filters life span. It is illuminated on the unit itself in a white backlight when pressed. The filter itself states that it lasts 12 months if used everyday for 12 hours, then needs replacing. At this stage, haven’t checked the cost of a filter and if I do, when needed, prices do differ. As always, Dyson provides a 2 yr warranty, so best to register your appliance. Overall, designed to keep air clean and fresh. The unit is quiet, so no need of worrying about talking above or elevating your tv. It’s designed to be able to have on and sleep well. A silly point for some, but a question for others, this is not an air con. or air con. level. Designed to keep cool mainly in 1 room, though can easily be transported to different rooms per persons comfort. Can also have timer set throughout, so if you fall asleep it will turn of itself. Personally, couldn’t find any negatives. Well compact, stylish (almost space age design, reminds me of an astronaut helmet). Doesn’t need a lot of room to set up and leave. Comes in choice of 2 colours Silver or Black/Gold. Reviewing the B/G model. If able to find on special, do get one. A major fact for all of us, there is no blade visible for little fingers to be intrigued by. Any age within reason is able to touch the ball with no repercussions. Safety is always a factor to take into account.
Enclosed are photos of unit.

Know better, choose better.
Great for cooling baby in summer – Surprisingly good. I have found some Dyson products over the years fail to live up to the hype, but this unit is quite effective. We have a small house and only one air conditioning unit in the living area, however in summer the bedrooms get HOT, especially the east-facing bedroom which is where our new baby needs to be. All-morning sun directly… Read more
on the window of this room has so far been making the room REALLY hot, really quickly, which means I need to keep the bedroom door open so the aircon can travel up to the other end of the house, meaning I have to exist very quietly whenever the baby is napping. Thankfully Summer hasn't been consistently hot in Tassie this year, but some of the days around 25 degrees are not hot enough to shut the house up and put the aircon on, but too warm in the baby's room with the door closed (even with the window open). I have found using the Dyson Pure Cool Me directed at the cot adds additional cooling without being irritating to the baby. We have tried other fans, and personally I HATE fans with blades, as I find they buffet the air which really bothers me (although my husband doesn't seem to notice). I put a thermometer in the cot next to baby using this fan to measure its cooling effect, and I was able to get a consistent (at least) 2 degrees of difference, which is just enough cooling most days to make it bearable. It is quiet, but moves plenty of air. There is a high-pitched element to the noise on fan speeds of 5 or higher, but again some people do not notice noises like this. I still find that significantly less irritating than a traditional fan. We've previously tried a free standing misting fan, which us adults agree feels nice but doesn't significantly cool the air in any measurable way. The baby hated that. Possibly the buffeting that bothers me also bothers her, but it's also noisy in general. I also purchased a personal evaporative cooler which is quite ok for its $160 price, but really only useful right next to you in bed or lying on a couch. It was also quite noisy, and the baby also hated that. She will happily sleep in the room with the Dyson pointed onto her and the window open, it moves a lot of air making it quite refreshing without the noise. As another reviewer wrote, the power cord is a generous length. Only small criticisms - the remote doesn't quite want to stick properly to the magnetic spot on the front of the unit, and the oscillating action is a bit slow to register when changed on the remote (if you're trying to position the air flow precisely). The unit looks a bit like a small modern garbage bin with an upside down salad bowl on top, we had a bit of a laugh about this, but it's in keeping with Dyson's design aesthetic. Everything about it feels deliberately designed, which I can appreciate. I cannot measure the air purifying abilities of this fan, but it does seem to make the room it's in "feel" fresher. That's an effect I certainly don't notice with other appliances, in fact it's sometimes the opposite. I would love some more info on power consumption, but I have read it draws about the same power as a ceiling fan (which is typically low). All in all, it's a very convenient, space saving and effective little unit and I'm certainly glad I've had it these past few weeks.
A quiet achiever... but could use a few more features? – This unit turned up just as I was evaluating various air cleaning methods (trying to clean up a mould problem). The filter sits quietly in the corner humming away. It took quite a long time to evaluate to ensure the results held and were not due to some other change in the environment: I was getting a burning in the chest that I assumed was due… Read more
to something in the air and after installing this air con & cleaner the burning reduced dramatically and has now resolved entirely (took a few weeks). The air also feels better when using this air cleaner and over the last few weeks I continue to feel better and better.
I have an air quality meter which suggests the air in my room is reasonable: low levels of all contaminants most of the time. The air quality meter measures formaldehyde (HCOH), Total Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) and Particulate Matter (PM 2.5 & 10 microns). Whatever air quality improvements are being made by the filter were not apparent on the meter.
However given the price of this aircon/filter combo (around the $500 mark) I'm surprised that they don't build a few extra things into it? The obvious stuff to include is particulate matter readings (PM1.0, 2.5 & 10). However VOC's, formaldehyde, humidity and temperature would all add extra utility to the filter? Many of these measurements are made with lasers... which don't require any maintenance and should be very reliable over long periods. As some of the much cheaper filters and meters include these features it seems reasonable to add them to this expensive filter?
Another feature the unit could use is something like electrostatic precipitation? Or a negative ion generator? These are low maintenance items that help remove positively charged particles from circulation. Such items require very little maintenance... so you get a significant improvement in filtration for a minor cost? They would also help the filter last longer.
The filter has an option for the head to move from side to side (like a fan). Not sure if this is a good idea... as every time you change the filter or inspect it (pull the top off the unit) you need to engage the gear mechanism correctly. If you were to put too much pressure on it or mis-align it it would jam or break (it doesn't look very strong). The danger is that the fan might get damaged as well and the filtration would also stop working? However so far there the unit shows no signs of failing.
The only visible sign that the filter is working is a small panel at the front which displays the speed of the fan.
Pro's: The HEPA filter only needs to be changed once a year... and the cost of the filters is not too excessive although the price of filters varies a fair bit depending where you buy them? The filter is fairly easy to extract... although getting the top off the unit to extract the filter is a bit fiddly: has two buttons that have to be pressed at the same time to remove the top.
This nice little aircon is great in summer (need a really hot day to appreciate it). If you want it for its filtering ability on cold days... turn it down as low as possible and move it as far away as possible.
Con's:
The remote works well... but is also quite annoying: The remote is meant to stick to the front of the filter via a magnet but it doesn't work unless you have the remote in exactly the right place. It feels like it would easily drop off if you were to bump it accidentally: Please expand the area in which the magnet works or use some other method of attaching it?
When turned on full the unit is quite noisy. This can be a bit of an issue at night if you're having trouble sleeping. I can't help thinking that it should be possible to use a quieter fan?
You need the remote to access all the controls as there are no control buttons on the filter itself. The remote is quite small... so your chances of losing it are quite high... and thus having a set of backup controls on the body of the unit would be useful?
The unit itself is about 40 cm tall and 24 cm wide and takes up a fairly substantial bit of real estate.
Overall I'm very happy with the unit as seems to have improved the air quality and I'm feeling significantly better. What I don't know is exactly why this has occurred: none of my measurements has identified a clear culprit that was causing a problem. It would be nice if the Dyson filter included some extra hardware that measured some of the improvements in the air quality... so that there was some way of establishing which parameters had improved? Such features would also help warn you when the filter needed changing? e.g. Rising particulate matter?
Thanks for helping me breathe easier.
:-)
The perfect summer cooling solution! – As part of the Productreview Ambassador program, I was sent this unit a couple of weeks ago to test and review. As I have used and been sent Dyson products before, I was prepared for something that looked modern and fitted in with my home environment, and I certainly wasn't disappointed when I opened the box. The Pure Cool Me is quite slim and… Read more
unobtrusive for its size, and fits nicely on my bedside table or desk without taking up a stupid amount of space like other fans can. The long cord is useful as the nearest powerboard in my bedroom is still a bit of a distance from my table. Given noise restrictions prohibit the use of our big air conditioners overnight, I was glad to be able to plug this in and use it for hot nights, as it certainly makes a big difference in my quality of sleep. Although marketed as a personal air purifier, I found that this unit could do quite a lot, even in larger spaces when left on for a while. When using it overnight, I have noticed a change in how well I have slept and my persistent cough which has been with me for years died down a bit, so the large filter is certainly doing its thing. In terms of cooling air, I have found the Pure Cool Me to do ok, but it certainly doesn't cool air like an air conditioner would (not that it should have to as that isn't the purpose of the product). It does take the hot bite out of summer air though I will say that much. The machine is controlled via a remote which I have found pretty good, however I would also like to see controls on the unit itself. There is a display which shows all your settings and the fan speed (1 through to 10), and you can use the remote to control oscillation, a timer, speed, and also check the condition of your filter, which apparently only needs to be changed once a year on average.
Although I have overall found the unit very nice, I think there are a couple of things that could be done a bit better as well. For starters, the fan is quite loud for its size, and unlike traditional fans which have a low hum, this is more high pitched which can become irritating if left on at high speeds for a long time. When I have it on setting 2 or 3 overnight though it isn't too bad. I have also noticed that the motor which drives the oscillation function of the unit can be heard quite a bit, so I have ended up turning off that feature when using it overnight just so I don't hear the hum of that motor every few seconds when it goes to turn the head again. I think the Pure Cool Me could also benefit greatly from a small water tank to help further cool the air like most air conditioners have. For those times when you just want really nice cold air I think this would be perfect. Another thing that I think is worth noting is that you should be mindful when plugging in and using the unit for an extended period of time, especially from a powerboard, as I have found the plug can get quite hot, at which point I turn the machine off and give it a bit of a break.
Other than that I have really loved this unit and will continue to use it regularly, especially through summer. Although the price tags for these Dyson units can be a bit steep, I highly suggest getting one if you suffer from allergies or need something to clean and cool the air around you when working, sleeping etc.
It's function rivals its beauty – I was fortunate enough to be gifted this beauty to trial and it lived up to ALL expectations. both been having far better night’s sleep since the introduction of this wonder.
It sends out a good amount of cooling, purified air. Handy that has 10 different settings so it's easy to set at the level you need. The low settings are quiet. Of course, the higher settings produce more sound but not a bad sound. Great feature for night-time is that the LED display disappears, so there's no bothersome light. Another good feature is that the fan monitors the use of the filter, so you'll know when to replace it. It has the total wow factor of form and function! Initially slightly larger than I expected when I took it out of the box but I I can see that it’s the perfect size to move the amount of air it does. Dyson has always delivered unconventional design.
That’s part of the beauty and wonder of Dyson. But the function rivals the beauty! It moves air like no other fan! Sleek and modern looking and simple but ingenious control of amount and direction of airflow. Small remote is magnetised to stick on unit so you don’t lose it! Love that!
Almost silent at level 1 and very quiet at level 2 while still delivering amazing air flow! The optional oscillating feature delivers head to toe pure air while you’re lying in bed. Absolutely luxe!
This one lives on my nightstand and I don’t want to get out of bed in the morning!
Well played Dyson well played indeed
A perfect air purifier for personal use – The Dyson Pure Cool Me is a nice little device aimed to be used for personal use, and not for the whole household. However, when I was trying it at my sisters place, it barely… Read more
did any good, as the product is only for a personal use, nevertheless its good to know that the Dyson Pure Cool Me can do a good job in smaller houses or units.
Functionality and ease of use: The Dyson Pure Cool Me is quite simple to use and operate. With one power button, and a gliding fan adjustment panel. It comes with a remote controller to adjust the following:
- Speed - Sleep timer - Air flow control
It comes with 10 speeds, 10 being the highest alas the noisiest. Yes, that thing is not as quiet as one would hope for its size. Therefore, using this at night, or in a room while sleeping is not recommended, unless noise can be tolerated, or the fan level is set to minimum. I was able to hear it across the rooms when it was at its highest level.
Make no mistake however, the Dyson Cool me doesn't just blow wind like a regular fan, but is also capable to provide a cool wind, which is advantageous over regular fans.
Features: The Dyson Pure cool me is aimed not only to cool, but also to purify the air. It comes with a filter that needs to be changed when warned, through its built-in reminder. The filter is an activated carbon and glass HEPA filter that captures gases and 99.95% of ultrafine particles from the air to minimise pollutants around you or your room (depending which Dyson Air Purifier you get, and the size of the room, or house).
I live in an area which is still under construction, so the amount of dusts and particles in the air is higher than usual and needed to dust every day. When I received the Dyson, I chose not to dust every day and instead did it on the third day, and to my surprise the amount of dust captured was way less than I do it daily.
In addition, because I live in a townhouse, when cooking, the smell usually last longer to clear, when the air purifier is on, the cooking smell takes half the time less than before for the cooking smell to clear.
The sleep timer is quite useful, you can set it to sleep to a maximum of 8 hours. Just enough to turn itself off when you wake up in the morning and getting ready to leave to work.
You also can, using the remote controller set the flow of air, and rotate from side to side, to deliver airflow whether you want it fixed at you, or flowing around the house, to ensure everyone is getting their share of coolness.
Design: The Dyson Pure Cool Me, is quite minimalist in design, not heavy at all and sits well in any home, on the floor, desk, or table. The design is also sturdy and looks like a premium product.
Final thoughts: If you're looking to get an air purifier that also cools you down and purifies the air around you, then Dyson Air Purifier is for you, if you'd like to make the investment, as the product is not cheap.
However, do not expect wonders, is not made to make wonders, when its 45C in Melbourne, the Dyson Pure Cool me barely does the job, it is intended to be operating alongside an aircon, but that also depends, again, on the size of the room you're in and the size of the house in general. I had mine in the lounge, by the afternoon, I was forced to turn on the air con, as it was getting too hot. For larger homes or room, Dyson has a range of Air Purifiers that you could check on their website.

Smart looking air purifier that functions well – This Dyson product is an air purifier with a variable fan for the purposes of air purification and cooling. Therefore, this unit is not suited to a large room and is actually designed to be placed within a smaller area such as on a desk in an office or bedside table in the bedroom. I mainly have this unit sitting on a bedside table in the bedroom. I am a hayfever/sinus sufferer and this unit has helped me by cleaning the air at night, giving me a better night's sleep.
It comes in two colour schemes - white/silver or gunmetal/copper. I have the gunmetal/copper model. The gunmetal/copper model, at first, seems to be an unusual colour scheme for such an appliance. However, once placed on furniture, particularly wood finish furniture, it actually makes sense - making it look smart without being the focal point and drawing too much attention to it. White/silver would look good on white and light-coloured furniture.
First impression is that the purifier looks very different to other fan type products on the market. It has a distinctly Dyson product look - neatly finished and styled - giving it a modern and sophisticated look.
The domed top makes it look somewhat top heavy and as if it could topple over if bumped. However, the unit is surprisingly stable, and at the same time not too heavy. It can be easily picked up and moved around, so it can be placed wherever you move to, such as on a desk, side table or anywhere else you may be sitting, working or relaxing.
Although the name of the product is Pure Cool Me, the cooling function is simply a fan and not refrigerated in anyway. Therefore, it is by no means an air conditioner; however, its ability to focus its air stream to one location still provides cooling relief - one would almost think that it is providing air at a lower temperature. Dyson claims that this model uses Dyson's Core Flow Technology which enables the unit to project a targeted stream of air wherever you need it. The unit has the ability to control the airflow direction. This is done by sliding the central face of the dome up or down. Sliding it down provides a more horizontal air flow, while sliding it up provides air flow that is projected upwards more. The down position is ideal when placed on a bedside table if you would like to feel the air flow on you. The up position on a bedside table has the effect of blowing air around you and not directly on you. This combined with the variable air speeds and sideways oscillation, allows you the option of creating the environment that best suits you.
The unit comes with a small remote control. The remote control is stored on the unit by attaching magnetically on the front of the unit. This is a great idea that helps with not losing or misplacing the remote when the remote is not required. You just need to ensure that you remember to put it back on the unit. It should be noted that the remote is very small and could be easily lost - hence the magnetic attachment on the front of the unit is a great idea. The remote uses a button type battery which requires the removal of a small screw to access it. This ensures that the battery is not easily removed by children resulting in a choking hazard. The remote is relatively simple with only a few buttons, including on/off, timer, fan speed, oscillation control and filter condition. The remote is not back-lit and the faint markings can be difficult to see in low light conditions.
There is a small round colour LCD display screen close to the base of the unit. This screen displays a range of information based on selection. This includes the fan speed, the filter condition, the oscillation status and the timer selection and remaining time. The screen although small is modern looking and clearly displays the selected information. When the room is darkened the display turns off after several seconds. It activates again if the remote is used or the room is lit up. This is a great feature if you are using the unit at night next to a bed and are otherwise distracted by the light emitted by the screen. The screen would have been better positioned higher on the unit, as I have found that the screen may be obstructed by other items that are placed next to it. For example, I often place books I am reading on my bedside table causing the screen to be obstructed.
The timer function has a number of options, being 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4 and 8 hours. The desired time can be selected or turned off by pressing the timer button repeatedly. While the timer is in operation you can display the amount of time left by pressing the timer button once. It will display the hours, minutes and seconds remaining. Pressing the timer button twice will turn off the timer (not the unit). The timer is a great inclusion if you are wanting the unit to operate at night and turn off automatically while you are asleep.
The unit can be set to a static position or to oscillate if you do not want the air flow to remain in only one location. This is simply done using a button on the remote. The static direction of the air flow stream can be adjusted by activating the oscillation by pressing the button on the remote. Once the desired position is reached during oscillation a press of the button will stop oscillation in that position. This is a simple process that can be done from the remote and does not require the unit to be touched or moved. The only issue with this, although only a minor one, is that if you wish to adjust the air flow a little further on in the same direction, when the oscillation is activated again, it changes direction of the head and requires multiple presses to change it again to the original direction. It should be noted that the range of oscillation is 70 degrees. This range is not adjustable (i.e. can not be reduced or increased) but is suitable for the unit to be placed in a corner area.
Dyson states that the filter will remove 99.95% of impurities from the air. They also state that the filter will last up to twelve months if used constantly for every day under normal circumstances. In the press of a button on the remote, the unit will display the condition status of the filter. I have used the unit on and off for several weeks now at my bedside table and home office and the filter indicator is still at its best level. Removal of the filter and inspecting it does not show any signs of dirt or impurities. However, the unit contains a sizeable filter covering the full circumference for approximately two thirds of the units height. The filter is easily removed by first removing the head of the unit - this is done by pressing two buttons on the side of the head of the unit. The filter is then lifted out by two tabs of the top side of the filter.
Although it is difficult to gauge the effectiveness of the unit by simply breathing or feeling the air flow, I have noticed that I am waking in the morning with a clearer nose and throat. This I attribute to its air purification capacity.
The unit is relatively quiet. The fan speed can be selected in increments ranging from 1 to 10. The higher speeds do create some noise which is understandable due to the fact that there is a motor that is operating, and air is being moved quite rapidly. However, it is much quieter than a traditional fan which normally creates a significant amount of noise by the fan blades cutting through the air. The Dyson when set at its lower end speeds is very quiet and is suitable for night-time use. Generally, when used on a bedside table, only a low fan speed such as a fan speed setting of 2 is actually only required.
The unit has a power supply which plugs in directly to a power point. The power supply has a fairly robust cord that is 1.8 metres long and plugs into the back of the unit. The power supply, although reasonably sized is somewhat awkward in shape - the issue being that it is quite tall with the plug terminals being positioned high on the power supply. This results in the bulk of the power supply extending below a wall socket. This can be a problem if the wall socket is close to the floor (or a bench top) - either it cannot be plugged in or a power board is required. It should be noted that the cord does not come out of the bottom of the power supply which would have otherwise exacerbated this problem.
What is great about this unit is that you do not need to have a hard copy manual. For example, the cord has a tag that has information on how to get more information, including a QR code which when scanned will take your smart device to their website for the unit. Similarly, the filter has a website label printed on it regarding the filter. These simple inclusions make a big difference when needing to look up information and parts.
Overall, this is a smart looking air purifier that functions well. Its styling, air flow technology and performance is typical of the standard we expect from Dyson. Although marketed as "Pure Cool Me" it is not an air conditioner, but an air purifier first and foremost. However, the motivation for purchasing this product should be for its air purifying capacity and its ability to do this on a personal level particularly through Dyson's Core Flow Technology. Anything more than this can be addressed by some of the larger models available through Dyson. All-in-all this is a great unit on a bedside table at night or on a desk while working and has the ability to make a difference to those with allergies or other respiratory conditions.

Perfect as personal air purifier and mini-fan – The executive summary = As an asthmatic, I think this is a wonderful product. Portable, easy to use and performs its job well. Well, we got that out of the way and here is the long review. The Dyson Pure Cool Me unit came in a box (ref: photo 1) that is very well packaged. the top which included the power supply adapter, remote control, two AAA sized batteries and a manual (ref: photo 2).
Initial thoughts was that the copper / smoke grey colour was a handsome unit but the plastics felt somewhat flimsy. I guess that this was considered by the product designers and was appropriate for the duty. Still, I thought the movable wind vane/diverter on the top (that copper coloured piece) felt really agricultural in touch and feel.
In daily use, this product cannot be faulted. I have had medical grade air cleaners and this product is right up there with them. Being a personal air cleaner, this had to be placed close to your immediate vicinity so I would carry this around with me in the house, whether I am at my study or in my bedroom retiring for the night. It will take an hour or so before you can feel the noticeable change in the air quality as the rate of air change cannot be compared to a larger whole of room unit.
Plus point is that it comes with a fancy remote control unit (ref: photo 3) and you don't have to get out of your chair or bed to adjust the fan speed or oscillation function. However, after settling down on the ideal fan speed, I have used the remote control purely for on or off function.
The downsides to this product is actually what makes Dyson famous, i.e. the cyclonic fan. This is because the unit is quite noisy with a fan speed beyond 5 (range from 1 to 10) and is annoying when it is near you at a time when you are working in your study or trying to sleep. The power supply adapter must also be the largest power supply unit ever built and is 4 times the size of a regular phone charger (ref: photo 4). It won't fit if you have a wall outlet behind some furniture like a TV console or credenza.
Photo 5 below shows the Dyson Pure Cool Me sitting in the corner next to my bedside. The yellow arrow points to the spot where a magnet holds the remote control place. Kudos to the design team for thinking of that little nice to have. No more issues of losing the remote control. Overall, I think this is a good product and I would give it 4 stars. The product execution is perfect but the perceived build quality coupled with the inconvenience of an over-sized power adapter, high fan speed noise and cost cannot justify 5 stars.
Disclosure: I was offered the Dyson Pure Cool Me as a member of the Product Review Ambassadors programme.

I was surprised because it arrived a few hours after I received the email about it being on its way. My previous experiences so far with Star Track has been decent ones. No complaints!
[First impression]
When you open the box first thing you see is the remote for the Dyson Pure Cool Me. It stows away magnetically on the front of the device. Was disappointed because I have just praised them in the V11 review about full cardboard packaging, and they have incorporated foam sheets into the packaging for the new Pure series. It is not only for the Pure Cool Me, it is the same when I acquired the Pure Hot+Cool Link around the time Sydney gained the vintage sepia hue from bush fires - wrapped in those dreaded foam sheets!
The cord is 1.8 meters long, and not recommending the use of an extension cord (fear of overloading) seems to be a little more than limiting the use of the Pure Cool Me. The power adaptor is very large (3.5cmW/7cmL/10.5cmH) compared to even the V11 charger (3cmW/5cmL/8.5cmH), while the Pure Hot+Cool Link has an ordinary power plug, WHY? Ill take an educated guess: there is no more space inside the device to fit the converter unlike the other models that has a base. But this shortcoming may make the Pure Cool Me unsuitable for users who live or intend to use these units in some older buildings where most power outlets are located at floor level or right above the skirting boards because there is simply no way it would fit!
Tiny round colour LED screen at the bottom default display is fan speed, it also displays timer and filter status - it goes out after a while so it's not lit all the time, considering some people can only sleep in total darkness. It will display a warning when you need to replace the filter. A small backup power button is located at the back of the device right above where the power cord leads.
Dyson has gone above and beyond redesigning your everyday home appliances with this device. At first glance you may even mistake it for a facial steamer. There is a reason for this strange design however, it is called Core Flow, which means it draws air around the device, feeds it through the HEPA filter located in the base, congregates a few jets of air around the round convex dome which you can move up and down to redirect the blast of purified air at your face or at your person like a jet engine. Sounds like some fancy gadgetry, see if it actually works.
[Operating the Dyson Pure Cool Me]
Operating it is straightforward, the function of each button is already explained on the quick start guide around the remote when you first open the box.
Speed 1 is whisper quiet, at close quarters you can get away at setting 2 and be comfortable. At 5 the noise is audible, and at 10 you know that sound you hear when you are on a plane and it has lined up with the runway and the pilots powering up the engines for takeoff? That is exactly what the Pure Cool Me sounds like when its on max in a smaller scale. It is actually louder than the tower fan we had before and we found it almost impossible to ignore due to the high pitch.
We tried it first in our study - had it on speed 5-7, directed the dome for higher airflow and enabled oscillation. We were reluctant to put it over speed setting of 7 because the constant whirring of a mini jet engine grated on our nerves, and despite the compact size it would not fit on our desks so it sits on a small table in the middle of the room so it provide us with some breeze. But it was very weak and with high back desk chairs we would still sweat with it on when the temperature is over 35 outside.
And so We decided it was very impractical as it got in the way, so we moved it into the bedroom. It is actually also too big to go on the nightstand, so we put it on the floor at the foot of the bed where it runs at speed 4-5 to be comfortable through the night with only a gentle whirr. I actually prefer the Pure Cool Me over the old tower fan, because the breeze it provides is much gentler than the tower fan and we feel much more comfortable at night.
Sometimes I need to turn it up in the middle of the night. I noticed a slight delay for the unit to respond to the change of setting, especially when it has been running for a few hours. It might not respond for up to 2 seconds. Which then brings me to the remote control dock. We only remove the remote from its dock for turning it on and off/change settings so it would not be misplaced. The magnetic power to attach the remote to the front of the unit is somewhat weak and in a very limited area, unlike the tower models where there are 3 spots at the top, you can gently drop it in that vicinity and it slips into place. Given that there is no indent or slot to attach the remote, I accidentally drop the remote control on the wooden floor more often than I like. It is difficult to grasp where the dock for the remote is while half asleep with dim lights in the wee hours, sorry to neighbours downstairs!
God forbid if you lose the remote though, with no app control that comes with smart connectivity you lose the functionality of oscillation and sleep timer. You can still turn the unit on and off, change the speed setting from the small button at the back by holding it down for a few seconds.
It is difficult to say about the purifying function, as my partner is the one who is prone to mild cases of allergies now and then happens to be fine in the duration of the trial period. Unlike its siblings Pure Cool Me doesn't have smart connectivity and so we can not monitor the air quality in our room while it is on. However, when the bush fire smokes started blanketing Sydney, we did notice that on nights when it was cool enough to not use a fan we tend to wake up in the middle of the night with blocked noses and oddly dry throats.
The sleep timer can be set between 30 minutes to 8 hours. One less appliance to worry about turning off in the morning is good enough for me!
To replace the filter, you press the round buttons on the sides in the middle of the device and lift the top off. You are advised to also clean the inside with a crevice tool of a vacuum cleaner before putting in a new filter. Then fit the top back until it click into place and you are good to go!
[Pros]:
- basic simple operation - sturdy build - quiet operation unless on highest speed setting - enough to cool a small bedroom - sleep timer and night mode - provides a gentle breeze while still be comfortable - replacing the filter is easily done
[Cons]
- very large converter unit attached to the plug, maybe unsuitable for people who live in older buildings that has power outlets very close to the floor - the high price for personal air purifying/cooling - the annual filter replacement - a short delay to respond to the remote, most noticeable when changing settings after it has been running for an extended period of time - no backup control for the unit beside the remote, only limited control without it - no smart or auto features - need to be close to be effective -compact, yes, but still too big for desk and nightstands - narrow oscillation range
[In Conclusion]
If you are someone who happen to be the only one to suffer from allergies/asthma in the family, this would be a very nice fan to have indeed. It is effortless to run and maintain, and the purifying function seems to work well. The large converter built into the power plug might make it unsuitable for users who live in older buildings where the power points are too close to the floor for the plug to fit. As this is meant to be a very personal product, for the purpose of cooling a large space it would be impractical. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Dyson fan and don't suffer from allergies - for the asking price of this unit I would honestly suggest choosing the tower/desk models without the purifying function instead as they in a similar price range and has better flexibility, more functions plus no worries about filter replacement.
Cleaner, Cooler Air in a Unique Design – The Dyson Pure Cool Me is portable, space-saving and well made, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that has had experience with Dyson products. This air purifying fan has redesigned the traditional oscillating fan. with a little copper coloured remote. The colour of the remote also stands out so is unlikely to be misplaced, although if you return it to its magnetic base on the front of the fan you shouldn't lose it anyway. In low light the remote isnt very easy to use as it doesn't have any substantial markings that stand out, so unless youve memorised what the buttons do, it can be a slight issue. On the other hand, the screen is bright and easy to read, it only gives basic info but how much more do you need, essentially it is a fan. It shows fan speed and filter life.
I really like the fact that when it swivels it doesn't require much extra space for clearance. It's an excellent design feature because wherever you place it, if it fits, that's all the space that will be required. Unlike traditional fans where you need to clear the area around it, so it doesn't knock things over when it oscillates. I also love the level settings on this fan, not 'low, med & high', you have increments from 1 to 10, each level being slightly stronger than the last. It mightn't sound like a big deal but for someone who feels the cold, this is ideal. I can have a much lower setting than what I can on a regular fan. It is also easy to change the direction of the airflow due to its unique dome shape diffuser. You can also situate the dome more centrally and have airflow divided between the top and bottom. The other noticeable difference is that when using it in an office environment it doesn't blow paperwork all over the desk (unless on a high setting). It is very pleasant to use and the fact that it is blowing purified air instead of just recirculating dusty, polluted air is quite impressive.
This fan is aimed at being a personal product and not designed to cool/purify an entire room, it is meant to be located relatively close to where the user is. Im happy to say that due to its portability you can move it around without any hassles and even when its not in use, it doesnt look out of place sitting on a bedside table.
Functionally, it is very quiet, almost silent at lower settings. During the night we have it on level 1 because we have it sitting on the bedside table and it isn't audible at all which is great. Obviously, the higher the setting the more noise it makes, but that is to be expected. The air purifier does seem to help, especially at night and makes sleeping more comfortable. My husband often wakes during the night feeling congested and after one night of using this product he said he noticed a difference and that he was able to sleep better. Also, as soon as the light in the room darkens, the display dims so there are no distracting lights to keep you awake. It seems to be a very well thought out product. Additionally, it has a sleep timer which can be set for between 30 minutes and 8 hours.
The filter is something which I had to google for more information and from what I read this is not a reusable, cleanable filter. When your fan indicates that the filter is full you need to replace it with a new one. The filters are $55 from Dyson's website. The only info regarding longevity I could find was the filter life is approximately 1 year if used 12 hours a day - that's a very decent lifespan, considering not many people will use a fan all year round.
I recommend this product due to its great portability; it can sit next to you at your desk or lounge chair and then back to your bedside table at night. There are no spinning blades chopping up the air, no nasty air particles being redistributed and no ugly metal cages covering the fan blades. This is a convenient, attractive, well purposed air purifier/fan.
I don't necessarily have any negative issues with this product, I just wish it had a heating function like some of the other Dyson fans, then it would be perfect. A product for all year round.
Good air purifier for small spaces – Upon doing some initial research into the Dyson Pure Cool Me, it looks like an air purifier for personal use. Given the bush fires in Sydney over the past several weeks, I was interested to see how it faired in providing better air quality and also whether it would be something useful for day to day life. Aesthetically the Pure Cool Me is… Read more
minimalistic with a clean white dome top and a silver body. The unit is somewhat bulkier than a normal fan (probably because it needs to have an air purification system built into it). One thing that was strange was that there were no areas (that I could find) to help you carry the product.
The Dyson Pure Cool Me is quite intuitive to use. You plug it in, and use the controller to turn it on. You can select to oscillate it, or to have it static. You can also adjust the flow of the air by moving the dome up and down. The actual jet of air that is pushed out comes out in one powerful burst.
In terms of air purification, this is a little more difficult to judge. While there were bushfires I feel like having the jet of pure air made me feel better. On days when I was out and about, I could really feel the smoke fill my lungs, but once I arrived home the air purifier did seem to make the air around me a lot easier to breathe in. However, as this is a personal unit, its not a product for bigger homes. It seems much more useful if you stay in one room all day like an office or the kitchen.
Since the Dyson Pure Cool Me is about $400, I would likely go for a whole room unit if I were to buy an air purifier unit. However, if you have a home office or work in one room for most of your time, this could be a relatively cheaper air purifier that would suit your specific needs.

It's a fan!!!....but a very nicely designed one that also purifies the air – Dyson Pure Cool Me Introduction Well this is my second review of a Dyson product. Pretty happy being a product ambassador as I get to test out and review some cool products. As such, I try to be objective and impartial in my review so that it is fair and balanced. lifestyle too.
Dyson are renowned for innovation, taking pretty much everyday products and finding ways to make them better. The old 'build a better mousetrap' thing. What is it?
This review is for the Dyson Pure Cool Me. As the name of the product suggests, this is personal cooling fan that also is an air purifier. I think everyone has seen the bladeless Dyson fan, well this takes another approach whereby air is blown over a dome. The converging air creates a high-pressure core that directs the air-flow into a narrow stream. So like the previous Dyson fans, there are no exposed fan blades and it produces a steady non-buffeted air-stream. Having no exposed fan blades also means its safe around children too.
As the name of the product suggests, this is cooling only, and surprisingly to some people apparently, it doesn't cool the air like a refrigerated air-conditioner. Its the low of air over you that makes you feel cool. (Yes, I read some reviews and some of the comments said they were expecting it to actually cool the air.) Also, as the name suggests, the Dyson Pure Cool Me also purifies the air it draws in around the base removing 99.95% or particles from the air. So if you're suffer from dust allergies, etc, the then this may be useful for you.
So lets take a close look at the Dyson Pure Cool Me and see what it can do.
What's in the box?
Like the Dyson vacuum cleaner I reviewed previously, the Dyson Pure Cool Me is boxed up and packaged with no polystyrene and minimal plastic bags. All the protection within the box is via cardboard. Nice to see Dyson is using more environmentally friendly packaging.
Apart from the Pure Cool Me, there is the AC/DC power adaptor and cord, small remote control , the Please read me leaflet and another card directing you to online guarantee activation and how-to videos. First Impressions
The Pure Cool Me I was sent for review is the copper and gunmetal coloured one, made out of primarily polycarbonate. It has a nice weight to it which means it feels solid without being heavy, and certainly feels stable as the motor is in the base of the unit. I don't see it toppling over during use.
The base is gunmetal grey, and the dome and remote control are copper coloured. Its quite nice in comparison to your standard white/grey appliances so even when its not being used, its almost sculptural in appearance. You could leave it out and it wouldn't look out of place anywhere.
So where to put it? Working from home, I thought I would try it in my home office first, then see how it goes in the bedroom. Either way, it sits well on the small corner table in the home office, or the bedside table. I should also point out, this is a personal air-purifier and it is only designed to purify and blow cool air around a small room such as a bedroom. If you're wanting something for your living room, this may not be suitable. Having said that, you could use it as a fan in the living room to move air around as you sat near it. I would not expect it to be able to effectively purify a large living area however!
The AC/DC is not built-in but is part of the power supply. This bit you plug into the electrical outlet and then the cord into the base of the unit. I expect they (Dyson) do this so for different countries, you only have to supply a different AC/DC power supply, rather than a fan with different electrical components inside. This keeps manufacturing costs down. The only downside to this is if your electrical outlet is in the skirting board, due to the vertical shape of the plug and how it is part of the AC/DC power supply, you may have trouble plugging it in. Note that the Please Read leaflet says not to use an extension lead as overloading may cause a fire.
Using the Dyson Pure Cool Me
First thing to note is that you operate the Dyson Pure Cool Me via the remote control. It attaches magnetically to the front of the unit, so hopefully you don't loose it. For me, the symbols on the buttons are hard to read. I know light-grey symbols on a copper coloured plastic remote design -wise looks elegant, but unless you have a brightly lit room, it was hard to read. I would think with constant use, you would remember buttons and what they do!
At the base of the unit is a little LCD screen that indicates when it is on, the fan speed and also the hours countdown if you're using the timer. There is no remote app for this fan unlike some of the other Dyson fans so all the information about filter life, etc is displayed on this screen.
Using the fan you turn it on, set the fan speed, timer and oscillation via the remote. The dome in the top of the fan is moveable in that you slide it up or down 1 2 cm. What this does is control the direction (up or down) of the airflow. In conjunction with the oscillation function, you can set it to blow air around the room either at you, or up and around.
This is an air-purifier as well as a fan. The sealed filter combines an activated carbon and glass HEPA filter. Dyson estimates this will need replacing every 12 months, assuming you use the fan 12 hours a day but this is also dependent on pollution levels. Replacement filters are approx. $100, so as well as the higher starting price of the Dyson Pure Cool Me, you need to factor in annual cost for replacement filters as well. It was difficult to test the effectiveness of the purification of the fan, primarily because I don't have allergies and don't live in an area that has dirty air. If I lived in Sydney during the smoke from the bushfires however, it would have been interesting to see how effective this would have been to remove this from the air.
Using the fan on a speed setting below 5, its fairly quiet. Using the fan on its maximum speed (10) its noisier but not obtrusive. At night, I kept it on 2 just so there was a gentle breeze.
Summary
Look, this is a very easy product to use. It is a fan and it does what you would expect a fan to do. It blows air around and also purifies it at the same time. Its quiet to use, appears to be very well made and its attractive to look at. You could keep this out all year, and not just for the warmer months because it does'nt look like a fan almost like a small sculpture.
If you're looking at a Dyson Pure Cool Me, you already know you're going to be spending a lot more than anything else on the market. You are however getting a fan that also filters and purifies the air, and for allergy sufferers, this may be all the justification you need. For me I really wanted to love the Dyson Pure Cool Me, but personally at this price, I would be looking at something cheaper as I don't need the purifier function. However, I love its design and I love the technology behind it and I still find the way the air comes out of it quite fascinating. So like me, even if you don't need the air purification either, this may be all the justification you need to buy one!
The Good: Great Design Air purification Safe around the littlies Quiet
The Not so good: Expensive Annual filter replacement cost
Best desktop fan I've owned – Have been using the Dyson Pure cool me for a few weeks now at both home and work. As a personal cooling device it's excellent. Has speed settings 1-10 and on my desk at work speed setting 4 is highest that's required in addition to the rotate function. Also really appreciate the timer knowing piece of mind I can set and forget. Sadly above 8 the… Read more · 1
unit is a little bit noisy as a personal cooling unit given the proximity. At home it's been good having the blade free design around young children and little fingers not being at risk. The inbuilt filter gives me piece of mind knowing I'm breathing mostly filtered air especially given the recent smoke haze most of us on the east cost have been suffering through. Utilised at work approx. An arms length away and sits on top of my P.C. takes up a fair amount of real estate. No idea how often filter would need before replacement but believe replacements cost about $50. Saw a video review for this unit where the reviewer said the remote doesn't magnatise very well to the unit, discovered that if it's stuck button side to the unit it magnatises just fine. Whilst this is a great desktop fan I'm not sure that I would have invested $499 had this not been an ambassador unit but found it great to use and am sure it will last a long time.
Great product for a musty office! Only downside is the hefty price tag – I received this product as a Product Review Ambassador. On receipt of the item it was packaged beautifully. I love the white/silver design and think it definitely looks sleek and classy enough to be in any home. It's very easy and straightforward to setup and begin using straight away without having to read through pages and pages of a manual. I… Read more
tested this model at my workplace which has no airflow or windows that can be opened. Whilst I have never suffered from hayfever or allergies, I do struggle with the staleness of the air, even when our AC is running.
As soon as I had turned it on I could tell it was making a difference. The air no longer smelled musty, but fresh and "clean". I love that it can be set to different run times as it means it doesn't matter if I forget to leave it on when I go home.
The noise is not distracting enough to interfere with phone calls or customers except maybe on the highest setting which I didn't feel the need to use anyway.
The remote is a handy feature although I don't think you'd ever be sitting far enough away from it to need it, seeing as the unit is designed for such close personal use.
I found it a bit too big to sit without interference on my desk. But it certainly looked a lot nicer than a standard desk fan and had the added benefit of filtering the air and not just pushing it around.
The only downside to this unit is the price. At $500 I find that an exorbitant amount of money for a personal fan. Even one that filters. I would never spend that much money myself, but maybe someone who had respiratory issues would find it useful in their work space or next to their bed. I would rather spend money on a whole room filtration system which could benefit everybody no matter where they are stood/sat. That's the only reason I rated it 4 stars.
