I was a fan...until I wasn’t – Castrol...This is the preferred brand of engine oil recommended by Volvo (passenger vehicles). My Volvo S60 T6 burns (not leaks) oil and needs to be watched closely and topped up 2-3 litres of oil every 10-14 days. This is well known and documented issue for this 3ltr engine (2011-13). The vehicle and engine is amazing, I love it therefore… Read more

topping up the Castrol oil every week or two as recommended by the manufacturer wasn’t a big drama for me. This routine continued on unchanged for 45-50’000km of blissful driving / ownership. One day the oil warning light came on before my usual top-up and I immediately diverted 1 km to the nearest auto retailer to purchase my Castrol oil. As it turned out they were out of stock at the time and recommended Penrite oil as a substitute. I had no choice, so I topped up the engine with Penrite and 50’000km later I still have the same Penrite oil bottle with the remainder of the oil in the boot of my car. The engine has never burnt oil again. The engine as before continues to run like a dream. Neither the Power output or fuel economy has suffered as a result. Now I only use Penrite engine oil at every scheduled oil change (since) and I’ve NEVER needed to top up the oil reservoir again.

Good value and quality oil – Are there better oils out there? Definitely and you pay accordingly. This product isn’t for you if you run a highly strung engine, go racing or require manufacturer specific oils. This product is intended for the average motorist. I’m a car enthusiast myself and like keep my vehicles in top shape and like to get the best value (I’m not talking… Read more

cheap and nasty).

I came across the product due to the regular deals at auto stores for 10w-40 and I wanted to standardise motor oil for all the family’s vehicles (family has 10 cars between us) - means less inventory and therefore less cost.

Been running this oil for many years with no issues - never used oil additives. Just oil and oil filter changes.

You no longer need oil additives - this oil will keep your engine very clean - if you have an engine with some light sludging - simply running this oil for the recommended interval along with oil filter you will instantly notice the inside of the engine getting cleaner.

Most of my driving is heavy urban and short distance freeway - which is very punishing for any oils due to fuel enrichment and carbon.

Pros: - keeps the engine super clean (actually observing inside the cam cover and looking at the cams) - great anti-sludge control for engines prone to sludge, due to strict emission controls. - noticeably smoother operation - excellent thermal stability, observation from oil temp gauge. - value for money when on sale

Cons (nothing, but if I had to nit pick): - tricky marketing can confuse people - causes exhaust to be stinky on cold mornings, observation compared to other oils.

Best oil on the market, daily driven, and abused on the street! – Best semi synthetic oil out there. I use this in both Nissans. The 2008 350z with currently 79k miles, and 2012 nissan with approximately 16k miles. 350z has been thru 4-5 oil changes thus far since I got it when it had 66,311 miles. No issues. Engine runs smooth and quietly. No leaks or worn seal as well maintained. Bought the car,and didn't know… Read more

what oil was used before so I gave it a try with 5w30 and fram filter. Today, I changed the oil and upgraded to a k&n filter. No sludge was presented or drop in mpg as the other reviewers stated(whom probably dont take care of their car). Mpg actually increased along with a tune up. I am a mechanic and rebuild engines as well. Other oils like Pennzoil, vavoline, and other brands causes engine failure. Even original factory engines had problems with other oils. Castrol gtx megatec protects like no other oil. This 350z is daily driven long distances as well abused some on the street. Best oil on the market! Suggestion of trying it out

Use it in everything!!! – I've been using Magnatec for more than 20yrs and have always found it to be an excellent oil. I don't care what all these data analysts have to say regarding it, from experience I can say it has worked well in a range of standard and modified cars. About 10yrs ago I started using it in a John Deere ride-on after a new motor failed at 90hrs using… Read more

John Deere oil. I sold that mower with over 300hrs on the rebuilt motor using only Magnatec. I now use it in my cars, ride-on mower, 4 stroke push mower, 4 stroke line trimmer and 4 stroke blower. They all start easier, are much quieter and run smoother.

10W 40 Magnatec Oil – I have used this oil in most of my cars for many years, Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 . NZ conditions maybe a little cooler than Oz. I have never had any issues, all my cars engines have run without fault. Recommend you wait for it to come up on special. Show details

super happy first impressions – Having used Castrol Edge for many years in my Mercedes Benz I thought I’d try this Castrol oil in my 2008 Jeep Wrangler jk 3.8. I have previously used other premium Australian oils of both the same and heavier weights in my Jeep . I am pleasantly surprised my Jeep’s engine is quieter and so far after 3000 Kim’s no oil consumption at all, the fuel… Read more

Great till you try wash it off – Did what oils do and provided the appropriate lubrication , drained it today after 10000km service and managed to get it all over me as I usually do laying on my back , I've done a few services using diesel and never found a brand so hard to get it off my skin using the usual methods I've applied in the past, was worse than graphite paste  Show details

Do not use, unless from a new engine – Into a 2.8 Rodeo turbo diesel @ 120K started smoking like Winston Churchill, can only hope it hasn't damaged the valve seals. Flush and go back to Valvoline Super Diesel. The best non Synthetic oil.

Rattle in the rockers – I have used magnatec for 20 years on my turbo cars and was very brand loyal as my cars never went wrong. I recently made up a 185kW turbo charged MX5 and it always had a rattle in the rockers until it built up oil pressure on start-up. I changed oil to old faithful magnatec and the rattle remained so next time round I thought I would push the boat… Read more

out and go for a nulon full synthetic 10w-40 and hey presto no more rattle...... ever. I will now be recommending Nulon synthetic going forward and have also change my partners subaru oil to nulon. I have now flogged off any magnatec I had in the garage for $1 on trademe (NZ version of ebay).

I highly recommend this oil! – I bought my 2005 corolla wagon in 2009 when it was 4 years old and done 117,000 km. I've used Castrol Magnatec 10W40 in my car the whole time and it's now 2022 and the car has done 345,000 but still runs as good as the day I got it! It has had no loss of power and it's fuel economy is still as good as ever! I religiously change my oil every 3… Read more

months or 5,000km as it states on the bottle, I also change the oil filter at the same time. I can use the more expensive Castrol Edge 5W30 and leave it oil changes for every 10,000kms but I still prefer to use the cheaper Magnatec and change the oil more often as I feel it is better for the car.

318000 miles and 14 years on this oil, no issues – Have been using this oil in my 1.4 4d 2005 Toyota Corolla for 14 years, put on 318,000 miles hardly burns any oil, engine quiet, engine never been apart, change every 5-6 thousand miles, very very good oil.

Excellent oil – I've never left a review for motor oil before, but I had to after using this stuff. I drive a 5th gen Honda prelude and I've always given it regular oil changes with fully syn premium brands. mechanic so tried it out and I just can't believe how different it feels. I took the car on a road trip recently and covered 1200 miles over a week, and I was shocked to see that the level hadn't even budged (on my car 1200 miles would be at least half a quart normally). Although we did also clean the pcv valve which I'm sure helped. But on top of that it feels so smooth and the engine feels more responsive again. It's also the cheapest oil I've ever used in my car as well. I highly recommend it.

Best oil I have ever used – I have Chrysler Sebring Convertible with a V6 2.7 engine that tended to sludge up when I had it in Florida. I shipped the car to Europe 12 years ago and changed the oil to Magnatec 5W30. , 95000 miles later I have had a smoother engine, more MPG and No Sludge. Great oil for a engine that has been written down as unreliable. Show details

Your car will love it – Perfect performance in my subaru impreza 2013 . My car has done 140000 km and loves this oil . The oil burns lesser than penrite over the time . Very cost effective as compared to other 0W 20 oils . Very right consistency of the oil helps bring in the better fuel economy as well . Show details

Excellent balance of oil protection/price – Over 150,000km keeps engine internals clean not 100% like synthetic would as there is a light oil lacquer in hot areas. Can live with more frequent oil changes vs straight synthetic and minimal expense as my preference. Works well and helps with cold piston slap than dealer oil I can hear a difference as time to quite is noticeably faster. Show details

oil is like horses for courses – my 2000 magna tj has done 275 kms so far i bought it with 80,000 kms and i think the magnatec oil is best suited for it.I once went 15,000ks without a service and the engine never skipped a beat the oil was very dark but not black,so i think the magnetic molecules does really work. Show details

Absolutely rubbish oil – Made the mistake of using this oil some years ago, even though I was warned it's pure junk. Ran over summer for less than 5000 km in a Buick 3800 V6, when oil was drained you could observe it had sheared down to nothing. It basically wasn't protecting anything anymore and looked like had done more like 25000km. I wanted to find out why this oil… Read more

was so bad and how it got this reputation and I found out it's mostly straight mineral oil with about 2% ester added in (that's where the "intelligent molecule" and "clings to surfaces" marketing jargon comes from). They also label this mixture "part synthetic".

Mineral oil was just passable in a thick 50 weight (old skool 20w-50), drop it down to 40 and it shears too quickly. Modern oil nowadays depends on a good full synthetic base stock, not cheap mineral, and also a strong additive package. This oil has neither and wouldn't be fit for a lawnmower.

However, Castrol knows how to make excellent oils, they are the Magnatec Professional series and NOT sold in retail stores, only to workshops.

Solved a deep-seated problem – Although our pre-loved Skoda Octavia came with a bundle of proof-of-service dockets the car was a total disaster gulping a litre of oil every 450ks accompanied by much smoke. Good oil – After changing engine oil from nulon long life to Castrol magnates, actually nothing changed much. What I can notice is it is more easier to rev up a little bit when accelerating. Other things like fuel economy, noise level, power does not changed much. I’ll say this is a good oil, concerned with its price, and it’s a "full" synthetic oil. Sometimes even cheaper than OZ brand Nulon and Penrite.  Show details

Excellent oil – Been using Magnatec oil for many years, and wouldn't use anything else. It does exactly what it says it does, and the engine in my car loves it. Oil pressure is strong on start-up, and keeps strong even when hot. The previous oils with similar viscosity I used caused my engine's lifters to tick when hot, but not with this oil. The engine spins freely, and effortlessly. HIGHLY recommended oil!  Show details

suspicious review by "Someone" using wrong viscosity – Username Someone says, "Horror. The oil thickens for unknown reasons and chokes the engine. Like a glue." If that's true, it's probably because he used 10w-40 in cars that call for 5w-30. Misapplication equals product bashing? Like there already wasn't sludge in a 20 year old beater and other older cars? Nothing compares with this excellent lubricant in terms of keeping the engine smooth and noiseless at a very affordable price.
