2 in 1 Shampoo and Body Wash – My girlfriend bought this for me. She said that I should try it because I love 2 in 1 shampoo and body wash. The Body Shop White Musk is a good… Read more

enough body wash. However, it’s not a good shampoo since it can cause dryness and frizzy hair. What I like about Body Shop White Musk is that it smells great, and the scent stays with me all day long. Although, I avoid using it on my head because I don’t like how it dries my hair strands. soothes and softens the skin causes dandruff every time I apply it on my hair

Easy to use – Coles shave foam is so easy to use and very cheap compared to other shaving creams or foams. It seems to last forever and lathers perfectly even making it easy to use with blunt blades.

Always Gives A Smooth Shave – I have been using this product for a number of years now and it always gives a smooth shave without cuts or drag. Unfortunately very few outlets stock it now and I have to buy mine online from the UK.

but the usual price is about $7.50.

It does a very good job but be careful to only squeeze a small amount from the container.

Premium shave cream at budget price – Being relatively new to Double edge razor shaving I have been experimenting with a few different brands of shave soap to find what works for me but… Read more

this Nivea sensitive cream is by far the best, and unbelievably the cheapest! I would recommend you use a brush and bowl for application but it only takes a small dollop to work into a thick lather in only 30 seconds. I find I have experienced far fewer nicks using this cream and my skin afterwards feels great. I actually purchased this tube about 9 months ago but was using a disposable razor and no brush/bowl and at the time did not like it all. This was all due to user error though and if used as intended is a fantastic shave soap. Highly recommend for safety/DE razors but I wouldn't use it with a Gillette/shick disposable as I found it would "goop" up with whatever it is they put in the lubricating strips on them.

Handsome Men's Skincare Facial Moisturiser – I love the sleek and minimalist packaging of the Handsome Men's Skincare Facial Moisturiser. The black on white cardboard box holds a white on black… Read more

tube that looks perfectly masculine and modern, this would not be an offensive addition to the bathroom of the manliest of men. The tube holds 100ml of product and it boasts some quality ingredients such as aloe vera, cocoa butter, shea, rosehip, avocado oil, grapefruit seed, nettle leaf, burdock root, horse chestnut, cedarwood, bergamot, patchouli and sandalwood.

The moisturiser is lovely and thick, the scent is a subtle whisper and earthy as it should be. The cream feels instantly hydrating, my skin feels properly quenched and soothed. It absorbs well leaving a protective, non-greasy surface layer, a quality I expect from any moisturiser. After hours of wear my skin continues to feel its best with no dry areas, flaking or adverse reactions such as redness or breakouts.

This is a great buy for men and women alike.

overtly masculine. Simple; but not cooling or overbearing. Stings a bit but am ok with that as doing its job. For me dislikes; only 50ml, too wide opening. Upon empty, more than a few ml remaining which I can't use no matter how hard I try. 100ml please! As of writing bought two for $9.60 at Woolworths.

Eye fatigue eraser roll-on-clogs – This product is a roll-on style eye gel. Unfortunately, the roll-on does not glide on - it clogs up and the product does not come out. If you apply pressure, ut can be quite harsh around the sensitive eye area. Disappointing

Is men's skincare different to women's skincare?

Man with beard looking in the mirror and applying a cream to his face

There are small differences between the skin of men and women. Men have (more) facial hair, thicker skin (physically, that is), larger pores, and produce more oil than women, which is why men’s skincare is sometimes formulated differently to women's skincare.

Men’s skincare, for instance, often places less importance on moisturisation, as males have a higher sebum production. They also often contain retinol, because collagen levels start to decline earlier in men than women.

However, the differences between active ingredients in products targeted towards men and those targeted at women are still subtle - the biggest differences you’ll find between them are the fragrance and product packaging.

Don’t feel like you have to be limited by who a product is targeted towards. At the end of the day, skin is skin, regardless of gender, so if you find a product that works for you and your skin type, stick with it.

What skincare routine should men have?

Men’s skincare doesn’t dominate as much airtime in the beauty world compared to women’s skincare, but that doesn’t mean it’s less important. While there’s no skincare routine that you “should” have, products on the market are generally designed to be used in a certain order.

So, what order should men use face products in?

1. Cleanser and exfoliator. Cleanse morning and night to get rid of oil, pollutants, and other impurities. You can also use an exfoliator to buff away dead skin to brighten your skin, but it’s generally recommended to keep exfoliation to no more than a couple of times a week.

2. Toner. Toners remove toxins that your cleanser may have missed, and can also restore your skin’s pH balance and refine pores.

3. Serums and oils. Different serums and oils have different purposes, including to hydrate the skin, reduce the visible effects of aging, brighten skin, and smooth its texture. Some people use one serum, some use multiple, and some skip this step altogether - it’s all up to you.

4. Moisturiser. A moisturiser helps your skin look and feel smooth and hydrated. If you wear eye cream - to fight fine lines or to revitalise your blinkers - then you can apply it before or after your face cream.

5. SPF. If you’re doing your morning skincare routine, then you should protect yourself against sun damage for the day ahead with sunscreen - this is the most important anti-aging product you can use.

6. Spot treatments. If you have spot treatments for any particular skin concerns you have (such as acne treatment on a pimple, ingrown hair cream, or any products for irritation), then you can apply them last. Polish off your routine with lip balm, and you’re ready for the day!

Choosing a product based on your skin type

Understanding your skin type can help you find a product that doesn’t aggravate your skin, and helps you achieve the healthiest glow you possibly can. Here’s how to identify your skin type and what to look for in a product based on your complexion.

Dry skin

If your skin feels dry, flaky, rough, or even itchy, then you may have dry skin. Your skin may also feel a bit tighter because of its reduced elasticity.

Men have oilier skin (largely due to their testosterone levels), so many skincare products for men combat oil - avoid these if you have dry skin. Try opting for a cream cleanser, a serum containing hyaluronic acid, and a thicker moisturiser.

Normal skin

If your skin is well-balanced, lucky you! People with “normal skin” have hydrated skin that doesn’t get overly greasy, firm skin that doesn’t feel too tight, and an even and clear skin tone.

Most products are likely to be suitable for you, and you can try out different ingredients to find which ones feel good on your skin. Look for vitamin C - it can help you maintain an even skin tone and brighten your skin even more.

Oily skin

If you have oily skin, you’ll likely have a greasy feel and look to your skin, particularly around your T-zone. You may be more prone to breakouts, and have larger pores.

Dealing with oily skin is tricky, because some products targeted at oily skin can end up drying out your skin too much, and your body may produce even more oil to overcompensate. However, keeping up with moisturising is still important - some people even find success in fighting oil with oil products.

Look for non-comedogenic skincare - these products don’t clog or block the pores, and help control excess sebum.

Combination skin

If you have a mix of oily and dry patches of skin, then you have combination skin. Try products that focus on balancing the skin, and use a lightweight moisturiser that can help tackle both dryness and oiliness.

Sensitive skin

Your skin can be sensitive in addition to being dry, oily, combination, or normal. This generally means that your skin is more prone to irritation and burning.

Simplify your routine if you have sensitive skin. If you’re new to skincare, start small with a fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser, and use a physical sunscreen rather than a chemical sunscreen, as these tend to be less irritating. If you want to level up your skincare, you can then slowly start incorporating a toner and serum into your routine.

If you have sensitive skin, avoid products containing alcohol, parabens, sulfates, artificial fragrances, and essential oils - these are known to aggravate skin.

Targeting a skin concern

Some people have a specific skin concern that they want to address, such as redness, hyperpigmentation, acne, irritation, or the signs of aging. If this is the case, look for products that address your concern.

Ingredients to look for

There are plenty of active ingredients to look out for in male skincare, but below are some common ones to look out for.

  • Hyaluronic acid: An ingredient found in many skincare products, hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin and helps it retain moisture.
  • Retinol: A derivative of vitamin A, retinol has potent anti-aging properties and fights acne by promoting the turnover of skin cells.
  • Peptides: These are used in skincare because they help keep skin proteins healthy and promote collagen protection, leaving skin looking youthful and glowing.
  • Alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs): AHAs (such as glycolic acid and lactic acid) help exfoliate the skin, while BHAs (like salicylic acid) unclog pores, so skin is clearer and smoother.
  • Ceramides: These help maintain a healthy skin barrier, so your skin better maintains moisture while keeping pollutants and impurities out of your pores.
  • Charcoal: Activated charcoal is used to absorb excess sebum, helping curb breakouts and blackheads.
  • Antioxidants: Antioxidants, such as vitamin C and vitamin E, help soothe inflammation and even out your skin tone, reducing the appearance of dark spots, blemishes, and redness.

The bottom line

While buying a dedicated face product for men such as a men’s face wash or a men’s face cream isn’t necessary, it can make it easier to sort through the sheer choice available to you.

At the end of the day, what you like and what you buy is up to you. Ensure you consider your skin type, your budget, and your own personal preferences when you shop, and you’ll be well on your way to building a skincare routine that leaves your skin healthy and glowing.
